'Worst player' earns maiden win
A British tennis player dubbed the worst player in the world has finally won a match at the 55th attempt and after three years of trying.

Robert Dee, 21, recorded his landmark victory in the qualifying section of a futures event in Spain.

Dee beat Arzhang Derakhshani 6-4 6-3 in the first round of qualifying for the Reus tournament, near Barcelona.

However, his moment in the sun did not last long - he promptly lost 6-3 6-1 to Artur Romanowski in the second round.

The victory means he remains joint holder of the record for the longest losing streak in the history of the pro game with Diego Beltranena of Guatemala.

Beltranena also lost 54 matches in a row between 1997 and 2005, but he managed to win a set during one of his defeats.

Until he beat Derakhshani, Dee had lost 108 straight sets.

Dee, who has a career-best world ranking of 1466, started his odyssey in April 2005 in Mexico.

He has been trying to win in tournaments at the very lowest level of the professional game in locations as diverse as Rwanda, Iran and Colombia.

Jokes! I played him when I was like 13-14 years old! I beat him in straight sets but I can't remember the score...

Oh yeah, and according to the Lawn Tennis Association he is ranked 3754 in the UK!!! That is awesome!

Maybe that was his motivation to finally win. ;)

On a side note how can someone remain eligible to play at that level if they can't win?

That's because he hasn't played any LTA events for 3 years.

The last time he did he beat a 5.1 comfortably and lost to a 3.1 6-3, 6-3.

Which probably means he's better than both of us, especially if he's improved in the meantime!

Just goes to show doesn't it....

Yeah that's true, he's based in the US now...

Well, he's had plenty of match practice that's for sure. You would think after losing 15-20 matches without winning a set he would have thought that he needed to improve his level of play a little bit... 3 months at a good academy improving his game a little bit and then try your luck again.

Maybe he did that and just kept losing... who knows.

These lowly ranked players must have either deep pockets or mindnumbing loans to support themselves while not earning anything substantial.

Any links that show ATP or even WTA player incomes on an annual or per tourney basis ?

Indeed. It is a different level, but I must say it takes balls to try and try and try and try again... At some point you must realise that it is not for you.

That's pretty much what i thought when i read the article, but having lived in eastern europe for a year now, you quickly realise that everything and everyone has a price... and here the prices seem to be lower.

I dont know about these particular guys, but id love to do that, just to get on the list so you could say you were an ATP pro. Id play till I got one ATP win then quit!

Also, 4.2 on those mighty accurate :roll: conversion charts...isn't a uk 4.2 supposed to be like a 4.0. Just shows how inaccurate they are.

Makes him a 5.0 on the conversion charts.

I say good luck to him as well. If he can do it why the hell not. It beats being the one stuck in an office laughing at him playing tennis with pros in a variety of different countries.

Dee’s performances were held up as symptomatic of this country’s woeful underperformance in the game. Soon even the world No 1, Roger Federer, had heard of and shown sympathy for the cruel treatment handed out to the Briton.

Federer first heard about Dee at the conclusion of a press conference after his opening victory in the glittering surroundings of the Monte Carlo Masters Series event. A day later he was still trying to glean more information and offered words of consolation to a contemporary who stands thousands of rungs further down the tennis ladder.

Dee is touched by Federer’s interest, but offers his record on the Spanish professional circuit as evidence of his ability. In the past year he has entered 11 tournaments, registered 19 victories in 30 matches and even reached a final last December in Almeria – hardly an achievement expected of a player who has been widely pilloried for supposed ineptitude.

Unfortunately for Dee, the circuit is independent of ITF jurisdiction and therefore not a contributory factor to the ATP ranking system. Even so, it has been the launching pad for 13 of this week’s world top 100, including Rafael Nadal.

So angry was Dee’s father, Alan, by some of the mocking articles written about his son that he sought the counsel of his solicitors. On Friday they presented their case to the Press Complaints Commission. Understandably, the player admits to being a little psychologically bruised, but even more resolute in his chosen profession.

“I just felt a little bit hard done by because I didn’t know what I had done to deserve this treatment,” said Dee, who has been based in Spain at the family holiday home in La Manga for nearly three years after spending almost two years at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Florida, which has produced such champions as Maria Sharapova, Andre Agassi, Jim Courier and Monica Seles. “I’ve worked hard and kept my head down, just trying to do what I love doing. I was a little bit hurt by the term Worst Player in the World. When you read that about yourself, not just in one newspaper but several, you think it is slightly unfair.”

He is better than 100% of the people on these boards. In fact most of the people on these boards would get schooled by a nationally-ranked teenage girl under 16.

Anyone who is rated below NTRP 6.0 is not good enough to compete competitively with anyone who has professionally trained since childhood.

^^Actually its more than 85% but definitely not 100%, I guarantee that. Hes struggling mightily to win matches in futures qualies. Hes not 6.0, more at 5.0-5.5. I have a friend doing the same exact thing Robert Dee is, traveling the world losing in Futures, even got into a main round Challenger due to lack of entrants...hes about 5.0, 5.5 at absolute best. We are at the same level and no way Im 6.0.

Yah I would tend to agree. The guy Dee beat, Arzhang Derakhshani, played on a weak D1 team- University of Nevada. He played mostly in the #6 position last year and he doesn't appear to be on the roster this year. So Dee is probably around 5.5 I would guess.

Seems the guys found a loophole. I would enter a challenger tourney thru a loophole around my hometown if I could...

lol 4 times....its rare that you ever hear of pros vs joe's in a legitimate tournament. mustve been fun for the kids...

he could use the money for another wc into another Mexico challenger tournament.

moz why do you get emotive over the dee issue? you also commented on the telegraph website article before it was removed defending him.
He has got a lot of shady entries onto tournaments and his handy main draw wc into mexico's challengers that got him ranking points despite not winning a single set....

Not bad for a 4.5 rated player.
