Real Review of Prince Recoil

I searched the forum and couldn't find a real review that didn't just have a couple sentences similar to "this string just sucks" or "i hated it".

Does anyone have a real, in-depth review they can give me about Prince Recoil string?

Also, should I really string it at 10% lower tension as advertised?

So why don't you just take your $9 set, string it; play with it; and give us a *real review*. Lifetime pass for the short bus.

Because I'm not sure if I should do that or resell it online for the $15-20+ dollars it's been selling for lately...I should probably do that. Was just curious if it was good at all for anything but realigning.

You don't need to compare it to anything. You just need to say what you think about the string.

And for the record, RECOIL sucks hard.

Okay well maybe I'll try it next time my strings break- as for my second question, anyone know if I should follow the 10% tension reduction (go down to ~51lbs rather than my normal 57) or if I should ignore that like I've heard on another forum.

String it around 55. I string hybrids anywhere between 60 and 67 and I do normal poly anywhere between 52 and 59 (depends on what poly it is, etc...). I strung RECOIL around 57, that's what my stringer reccomended.

Nicholas,

What string pattern do you think Recoil would perform better (I know you have bad opinion of it) on?

A 16x19 [MG Monster] or
A 18x19 [FXP Pres Team]?

My guess is a looser pattern like MG Monster because the strings on my FXP Pres Team don't move nearly as much as on my Monster, but I don't really know.

Probably in the Monster. It's got a more open string pattern, and RECOIL is a poly. But don't take my opinion of it, I used it in a 16x18 o3 Tour MP, and I haven't used a Head frame in years.

I don't ever wait until my string breaks, well, that's before I got my stringer.

Yeah I'm thinking about stringing before it breaks- in my current stringing (in sig) for my MG Monster... I was playing indoors late yesturday and heard a popping sound (first times the mains moved since stringing) and now it appears to have outlived its use and lost a quite a bit of tension...and now everything is flying long...But the same strings and tension seems to be maintaining in my FXP Pres Team (18x19) and they both have the same use...

So, I think I'll restring maybe Thursday.

I thought Recoil was a syngut with a Gore-Tex outer wrap.

According to the profile on TW it says Recoil is:

"Construction: Solid Core with a filament wrap. Gore(TM) MicroWeb technology extends string life, and provides a unique, low friction recoil for string realignment."

I can give a pretty good review of recoil for you. Strung it up in a Prince SP Pro White at 60. It does stay well aligned as advertised. As for the rest of it, power is pretty nice and control is really quite good. Has a nice muted feel about it and tension maintenance seems very solid. My wife has been playing it for a while now in this setup (she is a 3.5) mixed, singals and doubles player with a flat serve and hit flat forehand with a decent topspin backhand. I don't think this string is worth anywhere near the $25 price it retails for but if you look on the bay you can find it for about 12 a set which makes it a nice choice. I also think it somewhat depends on the frame you are putting it in as she didn't care for it in a Head Airflow 1.

Thank you very much for the quick review :D - did you notice if it loses tension very quickly?

Did for me. I strung it at 55, and within 3 hours of hitting (at the 5.0 level), the string felt like it was a half-assed string job at 30 pounds. Not my cup of tea.

This just goes to show that there are "different strokes for different folks". I hated the muted feel of Recoil. In my POG MP at 65 lbs., it just felt like I was hitting with a board, and I felt very disconnected to the string. Perhaps my tension was too high, but that is what I use for most strings (except poly - which I string at 61 lbs.)

IMO, there are definitely worse strings out there (than Recoil), but when you factor in the high price, I don't think there is much worse with regard to value.

Take care.

I'm just curious . If it's main selling feature is string"memory" to return to it's origainal postion wouldn't it try to coil back to it's shape from the package or retain coil memory. sounds like it would be a mess to string it would keep trying to coil back on itself

It's not difficult to string at all. I have mixed feelings about how it plays. For anyone who hits with a fair amount of spin, it's not going to "recoil" as advertised. However, if you hit flat-little spin, it will. I didn't think it played too poorly...like others said, there are worse strings out there. It's really the combination of the mediocre performance (in terms of realignment) and the high price point that people don't like. I thought it played like a slightly stiffer syn gut with a fairly muted feel. I wouldn't recommend stringing it 10% lower...maybe just drop a pound or two.

I think I was the first guy to review it. Got a pre-production sample from Prince and strung it up in one of my normal frames.

I'll find the review in a sec.

I liked it a lot and thought it would be good for many peeps.

Just expensive :(

It is called a "memory", but all it really means is that the strings (main against cross) have low friction and are supposed to spring back straight rather than say unaligned like some other strings . I heard that is has a fairly low coil memory aswell, even one person compared it to stringing with noodles (having no memory and being limp)...but idk how accurate that is.

I would say tension holds pretty well. Better than a poly and not quite as good as some multi's. It also is gonna depend on how hard you smack the ball. LIke I mentioned earlier. It's really a pretty nice string but at the $25 retail price it's too expensive for what it is. If you can pick it up for about half that then it's much more in line.

Because it's not really memory that's making it spring back into position- it's a low friction ratio between the main and cross strings. So it just is supposed to be kind of slippery when rubbing against something and just slide back into place.

I just strung up the Prince Recoil on my drop-weight Gamma X-2. I won't have time to play with it until Friday, but I can tell you what it was like to string it.

It's hard to explain- nothing like I've really felt before, but the closest I can think of is a thin spaghetti noodle that was soaked just enough to make it not break when you bend it. It felt slippery, but after stringing it, it doesn't feel like any of that slipperyness is on my fingers. It had very little coil memory even though it was very tightly coiled in the package (see pics below). Getting the starting clamp to stay was a little difficult because if I dropped the weight too quickly, the string would slide along the 3 center mains at the same time, so I had to be careful with it. The mains were quick and easy, and the crosses were probably the easiest time I've ever had with doing them- very little friction burn, if any, while pulling the crosses.

I normally string it 57-58 lbs on my mains and 57 lbs on my crosses. Since it says 10% less, but I heard that doesn't work so well- I ignored it mostly and did 57/55 lbs on my mains and crosses respectively.

I'm excited to see how it plays and will probably make another thread when that happens. :)

I think that most people who put down this string think it is a poly and expected it to play like a poly, when in fact Recoil is a "solid core multifilament" and plays like a multi with the added poly-like benefits that it doesn't move and it gives more spin (because it slides back).

Poly-playing crowd should look elsewhere, this string is for the multi-playing crowd. I thought this is the best multi on the market, but the price sucks and it would be nice to have the 17g option. Maybe other companies can come up with similar products and the prices come down.

Frame used Speedport Blue @ -5% tension. Strung 14 weeks ago, used for 16 hours and counting. The strings are till playable long after any other non natural gut string would degrade to the point I would cut it out. Feels like a multi, very muted.
At 12 to 15 dollars it would be a string I could recommend to my customers, at $25/set I can't stock it.

I really hope the price goes down- then maybe less people would see it as such horrible string. I wonder how well it would do in a blind-test against multis of various price.
