Thanks Mats, but do you have scores for 76 Chicago Stadium Invitational (3-4 November) and 77 Johannesburg Peugeot Open (8-13 March)? They are mentioned in French Wikipedia (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bjorn_Borg). According to that site Borg beat Newcombe in the 76 Chicago final and the 77 Johannesburg final against Vilas was cancelled due to strong rain.

The Johannesburg 77 tournament is on the ATP site, but I have never heard of
Chicago 76. I try to track it down the next time I go to the newspaper archive.
BTW the Munchen 7 march 79 against McEnroe is Munich, forgott to translate that one.

dutch round robin 1979

Hello, thank you for this great list

In the borg wikipedia article the matches played in holland 2 to 7 october 1979 are presented as two separate 4-man events with borg beating dibbs in each final. You seem to have presented the matches as one 8 man event with borg beating dibbs twice, once in the round robin section and again in the final. What's your view on this ? is the wikipedia article wrong ?

Legend
In late '83 he played some exhibition Matches against that years Wimbledon Finalist Chris Lewis in New Zealand. I remember there were around 3 matches. Lewis won the one of Grass, the other 2 were on played on slower surfaces which Borg won.

My French colleague, Jean-Marie, who is updating the French Wikipedia article, asks me if the following events were either mere exhibition matches or special events matches in order to list them or not as Borg's tournament wins in Wikipedia :

Chicago, Thursday, November 4, 1976 Borg d. Newcombe
Cincinatti, February 12-13, 1977, Borg would have beaten Laver 67 63 62 (it was perhaps a 3-man round robin event with Billy Martin being the 3rd one)
Kobe, October 25-26, 1978, Borg d. Gerulaitis 16 63 63
Innsbruck, November 20, 1979, Borg d. Gerulaitis 63 75 (and Solomon would have beaten Panatta 75 64).

Have anyone additional info about these matches ?
Thank you in advance for the answers.

It's amazing, and sad really, how many exos Borg played. No wonder he was burned out. And amazing too they guy went bankrupt since he would stop at nothing chasing $$$ all over the globe year after year.

what's clear from that list is even when borg was at his peak say from 76-81 his record in exhibition matches was no where near as impressive as his record in the matches that really counted.I think the 2 main reasons are that borg himself played much better when the real pressure was on wheras other players such as nastase, gerualitis even connors played better when they were totally relaxed

Borg is a strange man. I don't know if he's dumb or just doing this deliberately.

In an interview recently (with Navratilova) he claimed that he didn't pick up a racquet for five years after retiring and didn't play a match for seven. This thread shows otherwise - even in 1989, the year he remarried, he played matches.

In another instance, he claimed that he hadn't been back at Roland Garros after 1981, supposedly until 2008 (he was there in 1997).

Where's your head at, you dope?

Borg is indeed a bit strange:shock:

I saw a TV interview recently where he also said that he didn't pick up a racquet for 5 years!!!

Having seen the great list in this thread, I guess he is a little confused:confused:

I can't say I know what Mr. B is thinking -- I find the majority of his answers in recent (last 20 years until now) interviews to be very lazy, lacking in precision and often plain wrong.

What is true, however, in his answers -- if this is what he means, which IMO it is -- could point to he very fact that he didn't practice to any recurring degree for five years (ca 1987) and that he didn't play a real match for seven -- which is true. Björn always saw a major difference between exxos with an hours play once in a while and classic, official tourney play and the serious, daily practice that accompany that.

Borg is definitely not the man, sadly IMO, who, when asked about some momentous happening in his prime tennis-career, gives his long, detailed account with a bright nostalgic gleam in his eyes. As I've heard it 98% of the questions he gets are very simply of the same kind which allows for a very cookie-cutter answers. So when a more nuanced question is raised there's a tendency to hear the same answer one has heard a billion times before from him. But it's hard to understand his unique situation and its specific problems.

If there's a longer interview -- often made by tennis-expert with great knowledge of its context and so forth -- he becomes much more authentic, unique and surprisingly revelatory in his responses. He seems to adapt to the environment to a great degree. And if the interviewer doesn't get his attention correctly we get the trite stuff instead of the gold...

This is just my experience and deduction of this question CyB...

I sense Bjorn also doesn't want to recall or provide a great deal of information about the post-retirement years, involving all of those forgettable, even-if-expensive exos.

The media today has carved out a really mystical image for him, as the man who simply walked off into the darkness. It sounds better than the man who overstayed his welcome.

Perhaps Bjorn isn't aware that here on TT we have all the skeletons from all the closets. :)

I think most of us thought Borg retired in 82, when in fact he thinks he retired in 87 (he is obviously right):)

And I'm still impressed at how well Connors did against Borg in meaningless exibition matches:):)

the trouble is jimbo you hit nail on head meaningless exhibition matches. The fact is when they were both at their peaks borg clearly had connors number and they both knew it:).Having said that borg, connors ,mac and lendl are 4 of my favourite players of all time and they had some classic matches between them over the years.

Thanks a lot for the Borg-Lewis exo results. Lewis was a Wimbledon finalist that year - shows how capable Borg still was at the time.

I can confirm that the Christchurch match was definitely on Grass. I watched replays of it a number of times in the 80's. Sorry, long since lost the tape. (I am from New Zealand by the way). I remember the local media being surprised that Chris Lewis had won the match on grass and asked Borg about whether or not he was putting a full effort in and he responded that indeed he was.

Oh sorry, I checked his info. He was a tennis player and hockey player before becoming a businessman. Wow, this guy is amazing....

Tiriac reached the quarters of the first French Open in 1968, extending Laver, future runner-up, to 5 sets. He also won the doubles of the 1970 depleted edition.

711100 711100 Casablanca MOR Morocco International Tiriac Jauffret 76 60 63

You can note that Tiriac was able to beat Nastase as late as May 1971 when his junior was about the 6th player in the world (Ion had convinced Nastase to play the Madrid tourney that week instead of defending his Italian Open title which is pretty odd given that the Italian was nearly a major at the time)

P.S. I cut a single word as follows "Interna zionale" because when you stick "na" and "zi" the computer, not understanding Italian, considers it as a censored character string and wrongly blanks it.

I was behind the baseline, a few rows up, in Charlotte 2/2/83. It was my first time seeing Borg, after having been a big fan through my high school years. The only thing I remember about it (don't even remember who won) was being vaguely disappointed. It was real "exhibition" tennis.

The next time I saw him live was a Tokyo Seniors event in 1997. He was really listless and lost quickly. Connors, by contrast, was a man playing with boys as he won the event.

The way it seemed to me, though I could be wrong, was that Connors was the kind of competitor who needed to win, no matter the venue, and that Borg was sometimes willing to phone it in and just collect a paycheck once his reputation was established.

i tend to agree to an extent as i said earlier earlier even when borg was at his peak say from 1976 to 1981 he had virtual total control over connors in any important matches and also never lost a competitive match against vitas and yet in the exhibition matches he played against them both had several wins against him as did several other players who he beat convincigly in the big tournaments.I think personally bjorn only tended to ever really give 100% in the matches he thought really mattered and played gret under the pressure of the ones that counted wheras the likes of jimmy, vitas and several other players whilst being great competitors played bit more freely in matches where pressure was off and aslo as you said i think jimmy took every single match as matter of life and death.

This match was at the South Mountain Arena in West Orange, NJ on Feb. 9. '77.

While googling the match I found a link to another match they played two days later in West Palm Beach, Fl. Borg won 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.

It had to be 83-84, I think. (85 at the latest)

I remember Borg playing mixed doubles in the early 80's at the Gunze event in Tokyo with Bettina Bunge. I also remember him losing in the World Mixed Doubles tournament in 1983 to Mandlikova-Nastase, though I don't remember who his partner was.
