i've only hit with the GTs -- i like them alot...what's better about the original?

"Better" is subjective. To say one racquet is better than another is like saying vanilla ice cream is better than chocolate. Unfortunately in this forum we have a syndrome of "My racquet is the best."

If we have to define a "best" racquet I suppose it has to go to whatever Roger Federer is using, since he is, and has been for most of the past 6 years, the world #1. So if one racquet can be better than another, then all of us PSL and PSLGT users are using an inferior racquet.

We should rephrase our love for our racquets like, "The PSLGT plays best for my individual style of play, buy your mileage may vary and you should demo both just to be sure."

agreed...

i guess what i meant to say, is what qualities of the PSL made you like it better than the newer "GT" version? for me personally, all the Babolats "GT" racquets and their subsequent previous versions (Pure Drive, Pure Storm, and AeroPro) that I've tried -- the "GT" version has had improved feel and solidness, in all those 3 cases -- but i haven't had a chance to compare the PSL directly with the PSLGT, so I was curious if any has...

I'm curious about this too. Only demoed the PSL GT and was about to pull the trigger and buy one. But then started reading up some more on the PSL non-GT and now I'm a kinda undecided. If the differences are incremental, then I'll just stick with the GT, but it seems like many folks think there's a pretty big difference.

I think TW's very own staff, Spencer Boller has joined this support group as well! I noticed he was holding the older non-gt version in a picture on one of the recent racquet reviews.

well of course we think our racket is better, we demoed for multiple hours to find it.
And I thought it was a given that anything we say involving the words "I" and "racket" and "liked" are subjective. I mean, of course there isn't one racket that's better than them all. Everyone knows that.

OMG, how much I love this racquet..!! I am thinking about getting a second one ,
but I am concerned with "distance racquet matching" !! I should have bought a pair right from the start...

I have the non GT version (haven't tried the new version).

Allow me to say that it is one of the most beautiful racquets out there (at least to my eyes, he he).

I love how it is a lot more stable than what the SW leaves you thinking. Amazing !! A very special, unique feeling.
The only thing I don't like too much are touch shots, but then again it is the string that also comes into play here...
Additionally, there is a point when it needs some lead; I myself haven't tweaked it, as I love the original - incredibly easy swing - plus I have my pair of matched Volks for higher SW.

I think it craves for thinner gauge strings. I used to put WCSS 1.20, but now I am going to try it with Lux adrenaline on. Can't wait.

Haven't read all the comments. Has there been anybody who has tested the newer ltd version (GT) and can comment on the differences between the two frames?

Guys, in this very thread around page 13 the GT version becomes available and a few have tried both. Start here.

Just take all this with a grain of salt because there is always the chance that the "newer is better" syndrome comes into play. Demo both no matter what a forum thread says.

I read the few comments.

I really did expect a more detailed comparison between the GT version and the older one. Anyway...

Somebody also asked for a comparison between PST Ltd and the Volkl Mid. Let me say a couple of things here, nothing unexpected, because I 've been hitting with both.

The babolat racquet is friendly, just because it is more "swingable". Nothing to do with sweetspot here. I mean the Volkl is very sweet for a mid and you CAN also achieve very powerful shots if you work properly around it...

The traits that you instantly come across and separate these two IMO are:

1 . SW and Twistweight (I am not talking numbers here, I am talking the real thing i.e. the feeling you get; of course numbers DO confirm the remarks). I don't mind the lower SW of the Babolat, but lack of stability when you hit off-center shots can be an issue.
Still, good footwork and a clean stroke compensate for this eventual lack of confidence, so does the swing speed and the ease with which you can step in when hitting.

2. Grip shape. The Babo is a lot more boxy. I do prefer it compared to say a Prince grip shape. Not bad at all. I just happen to like the Volkl/Becker grip and I know many (not to say most) don't.

3. Naturally, leaving the parameter of the string aside, the 18x20 pattern is less spin friendly. I am not saying it's better for flat hitters, it's just easier to utilize out of the box if you don't overdo it e.g. with extreme western grips e.t.c. The racquet has a lot of qualities, you can find the string/tension combination that suits you and squeeze all the spin you want from ball pocketing. The stick is an easy to swing (easier than average) player's frame. I have made some unforced errors relying heavily on the ball grip from the 16x19 Volk pattern occasionally !!

4. A loooot of room for customization for the Babo.

5. I think this racquet will make many appreciate the feeling of an above average HL balance.

6. I find that touch shots could be slightly better with the PST Ltd. It does leave me wanting something in this area. I am saying this coming from Dunlop, Volkl mid and Wilson K Blade. So it must have some truth in it, although I made this comment (see above) about the very important role of string when it comes to touch shots.

Thanks, Ken, that was helpful. The original version is cheaper and in my opinion, looks cooler. Perhaps the original version is close to the GT version and the small difference in feel can be improved with weight and stringing? Thoughts?

They're 2 different rackets, IMO. Neither one is better.

I would love to add my support for the PSL-GT.

A little background - been playing with the Prince Diablo Mid. for the past 2-3 years (had a short flirt with the Rebel and the Roddick PD as well), which is also the majority of my college career (so far). I have loved the racquet, but I have found it to be on the stiff side and I have been unable to really "settle" into a setup as far as lead and string tension goes. That coupled with the looming unavailability of these frames and my dwindling current stock of them has lead me to once again demo some racquets.

I have sweet the last week or so trying some frames including the Aerogel 4D 200, 4D 200 Tour, BLX 95's (both patterns), Youtek Prestige MP and the PSL-GT.

I "liked" pretty much every racquet I tried, although I have never been comfortable with the what I find to be stiff feel of the last couple Wilson 95 sq in offerings. I also am one of those who can't stand the rectangular head handle shape on my forehand and serve (it feels great on my 2hbh and volleys). I also found the 4D 200 to be a great feeling frame and I also slapped a little lead at 3 and 9 for some nice stability - this helped, but I still didn't get the "wow" feeling I was looking for; I also found serves to be the achilles heel of the Dunlop frames.

Then it happened.. I tried the PSL-GT.

This was the one racquet that was an after-thought that I added to my bunch at the last second more out of curiosity than serious interest. Granted, I had in past been a devoted Pure Control user (until you couldn't find anymore), I switched for a short period to the Roddick GT PD, and I had considered switching to both the PST and the PST-GT, so I have enjoyed Babolat's other offerings. On my first outing I only picked it up at the very end of my hit and thus didn't have but 15 or so minutes to use it - in this short time I was able to swing it comfortably off the ground and really swing out - I was sad that I only switched to it at the very end. I had read previously that the "Limited" series of the storm's (both GT and non-GT) were extremely low-powered and thus I had casually made up my mind to disqualify it from my choices. Boy am I glad I gave it a try.

After my initial hit I could tell I like the demo, but I felt I should change the setup a little to better suit my game, so I altered it in the following ways:

1. Cut out the hollow core demo strings strung at mid + 2 and put in an extra set of Weisscannon Matchpower at 54/53. I am a full poly user (16g in open frames like the Diablo, 17g in tighter patterns like the PSL)

2. Put 4g of lead at 9 and 3 (4 in long strips of 1/4 tape, each weighing 1g)

I played today with another one of my hard-hitting teammates and the results were amazing. I could lay into every shot and keep great control at high speeds. I was truly blow away by the access to topspin I had; I was prepared to have to work a little harder for a nice deep, heavy rally ball but the PSLGT can do topspin like the best of 'em. It also shone nicely at the net, something that Babolat frames are not known for.

The best way I could summarize/describe this racquet is as follows:

It feels like a solid, classic mid-size head frame (like, say, the prestige classic or i-prestige) with the playability of the modern Babolat frame (i.e. Pure Drive or Pure Storm lines).

It requires good technique and footwork/prep, but rewards heavily for doing so.

I will update my continuing thoughts as I hit with it over the next few days; I feel my initial change with lead was pretty much spot on but I will do some light counter balancing with approx. 2g's of weight right under the butt cap - I have found this type of customization to help me get around better on my 2hbh, the one thing that I felt could be improved from my hit today.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread; you helped me decide on a reasonably setup and have convinced me I may just be on to something with this racquet... I don't know if I will be able to switch right away as I am still mid-season (we have a month break from competition, which is the only reason I am demoing at all) but I may look to take the plunge as soon as I can.

Just wanted to say, I plastered the inside of these things with lead, and stuffed a bunch in the handles, and it's just amazing.

The reason I play tennis is because I love the feeling of hitting a good shot. and until recently, that meant groundstroke. So, I had good volleys, but I never pulled them out, because I didn't like the feel of them with my old rackets. But over the last week, I've become an all courter, just because of how nicely this stick volleys. It's immaculate. The extra weight makes it so I can basically just hold the racket up and hit a winner.
And it still lets me crush my groundies.

To everyone, try leading this. It really responds. You might hate it, but you also might love it.

also, I want more. Anyone leaving the club should contact me at adam.l.boldt@gmail.com

Hello all, I've followed this thread for a while and having just purchased the Ltd, I thought it's time I joined in. I just picked up three PSL GTs and have begun experimenting with string & tension. I'm a 4.0 all-courter with a 1HBH and long swings on both wings.

I had really wanted to like the previous PSL, but in truth the PST ended up being a better fit for me at my level. With the GT versions, I felt like the PSL GT had more of everything I liked about the PST with all the manuveurability of the PSL specs. And GT version seemed to have a more stable hoop than the PSL.

Anyway, I'm trying out Tecnifibre X-One 17 at 56, 57 & 58 in each frame. Anyone have thoughts on this set up or any other stringing suggestions for the PSL GT?

Thanks...

Sorry, didn't see this. Try to demo both, but it seems the PSL is more or less the same racquet and people raved about it before the PSLGT came out. Sure there are minor differences between the PSL and the PSLGT, but its not like comparing a PDGT to the PSLGT.

If it works for you I'm sure the PSLGT would too, and vice versa. The cool thing about the PSL is it is dirt cheap now and you can get two racquets for the price of 1 in many cases. There is a local store here in Milan that was selling them for €89 and two for €150.

Great user name!

I'm using TF MultiFeel at 53m/51c in the PLSGT. My strategy is to match a very low powered frame with a control oriented multi at low tension, therefore a slight power increase due to the strings. This gives me the ultimate in arm friendliness and yields a stringbed that is more soft thus giving me more ball pocketing and spin at the same time. Works great for me and there still is an abundance of control as well. I call it my Holy Grail setup.

I liked the PSLs too but you certainly have to set-up, load and create your own power, string and finding the right tension for feel and power was critical. A great playing frame.

If you are a player and a fan then picking up a couple of those PSLs is really a great deal!
Off topic. Just how strong is the Babolat brand generally around Milan, Italy generally??

Man, been demoing this frame for awhile now. I so love it on groundies and volleys, being able to just swing out so easily without fear of overhitting, but the thing that's just ruining what would otherwise be a perfect playtest is serving. I'm generally a very big server but I just cannot get dialed in with this thing. Unfortunately I think it has to do with the grip. I've always swung Wilsons and with the more oblong Babolat grip, I just can't seem to get quite the pronation/wrist snap to really whip through the zone.

Anyone else have similar issues with serving? On everything else I just adore this thing, but given that the serve is just so important in match play (especially for me, since it usually gets me several free points) I don't know if I can pull the trigger.

JGads. It took me several months to get comfortable serving with my psl's.
Dont think it was the grip, more likley the head light balance. I played around with lead tape for a while. Now am fine with just an overgrip and rubber band.

BTW The other day i thought i had cracked the frame but it was only my rubber band dampener had come off.

Yeah, I have a buddy who plays with the PD Roddick, he had a rough time when we traded sticks for a couple games. Couldn't get used to the balance at all.

It's funny - I had a Head Speed MP that, weight and balance wise, was very similar, maybe even exactly so, to the Ltd. Could never find the serving groove with that one either. I get decent consistency on it and rarely double, but I just don't get the aces and service winners that I'm used to getting. I wonder if it's worth paying for an uber-loose string setup to maximize the pop to test that out before handing it back, or just give up the serving dream with this one. Because otherwise, like I said, I really dig this stick all around.

Hi,

I just bought two first-gen PSLs and hope to receive them by the end of the week.

I was thinking about stringing the first one with Tecnifibre Pro Redcode 17 gauge (1.25mm) mains for spin and IsoSpeed Professional 17 (1.20 mm) crosses for comfort. How does that sound? Any advice on tensions? I was told IsoSpeed Professional is supposed to be strung about 6 pounds (3 kg) higher than usual in order to take its tension loss into account. I don't want it to feel too mushy, but an 18x20 stringbed hardly ever feels mushy, does it?

Best regards,

rlau

The string pattern is pretty tight so you can go a little lower than you would normally. For reference, I string with TF MultiFeel at 53m/51c and it still feels nice and crisp.

True dat, the PSL isn't the most powerful stick out there, so feel free to go a few pounds under recommended tension. But I agree, keep the crosses (especially if it's gut or syngut) up a few pounds over your poly mains.

Picked up a PSL today, not the GT but the old one. I think the old one has better cosmetics.
Played a set tonight and it really doesnt have much power to it. Good thing is I could still serve hard. Really this is how tennis should be played!

Exactly, I have two old ones and two new ones, for some reason, the old ones feel best at 57 (m)/59(c) usually with Multi main, syn gut cross, but the GT's I have strung up with PS Big Ace @ 60 lbs and they're just heavenly, never could stomach full poly in the old ones though - probably Mental...

Everytime I think about switching to something with a more open string pattern or a little lighter, I never get past the initial thought bc the PSL's are just too sweet...

strangely i have some wrist/elbow pain with this racket...

Then it's your technique.
This racket is the easiest racket on my arm I've ever played with. Beat out a bunch of old prokennex graphite/fiberglass models, PB10mid, and even an old woodie. (assuming you don't constantly hit the woodie sweetspot.)

Weight: 340 g / 11.99 oz
SW: 304
Flex: 62
Balance: 31 cm

Strung, with an overgrip.

I added silicone in the handle and lead at 10 and 2 to the racquet above, which brought it to the following specs:

Weight: 353 g / 12.45 oz
SW: 331
Flex: 62
Balance: (Not measured yet.)

I had it strung with Babolat RPM Blast @ 24 kg / 53 lbs and played for an hour today. The stick felt extremely solid and comfortable. I'll edit this post later to add more.

Just bought one today blind, never tried it before but based on specs I think it will be a great racquet, I am coming from prestige mid plus line which is my racquet of choice unless the pure storm ltd gt changes that for me, it is coming prestrung with technifiber feel 17, I was planning oin stringing it with kevlar and something soft on the corss at a higher tension about 55/57 how does that sound ? Anyone try kevlar on it ?

I think lower tension is better with this frame. gets you some added pop without losing the control. however, very interested to get your feedback on this vs. a Prestige MP. Went out today and hit with the Ltd. vs a Prestige Pro, and the Pro had so much more pop, especially on serve, but I couldn't hold it in the court -- especially going straight from the Ltd. to the Pro. Same free swing on the Pro gave me a lot of fliers.

I have the Prince Problend on them and I love it. I think I'm one of the few that enjoy problend. I've used it on most of the rackets I've played with I.presige mid, dunlop mw 200g and they all felt great. Good pop for me. Many say its too harsh, theres no feel, or with a 18x20 its not a great set up, but then again what works for one may not work for another. Try it out at 60lbs.

i am still trying to find a good cheap($8 or under) string job that i really like with this racket, any suggestions?

i know this goes over your budget...but Luxilon Big Banger Ace 18 in the mains (54 lbs. $6.50 for half set -- $5.83 per half set in reel form) and I tried the cheap Gaucho Gut 16 Gauge (around $7 for a half set) in the crosses at 56 lbs...WOW! this is the first time i've tried natural gut in the crosses and it makes a big difference in this frame...gives you that extra pop / ball pocketing / feel and comfort...in this racquet for me, it's string perfection...i'm really amazed how nice it is...

I owned and played for awhile last fall with the GT version.

However, last spring, I had an extended demo with the non Gt version strung with Problend at 62. I was expecting it to be horrible and have no feel but it was quite nice.

Great feel and great stick but in the end, just not a good fit for me; I couldn't ever come to grips with the balance-even after adding lead. I spent 18 months with the PST and much preferred the heft of that one :)

I have experimented a bit and now I have found a good setup for me. An overgrip and a dampener and 12 grams of lead. 8 at 3 and 9 and 4 in the trapdoor. It is now very stable with decent power and yet very very controlled. Weighs in at 354 grams with a good HL balance. Perfect!!

Alright so I got to play with the PSL GT today it was strung with tenchnifiber feel 17 55m/53c, I usually like to play with high tension and a harsh stringbed like kevlar and poly setups so I was not too happy with this string and tension however I really like the frame and I am probably making the switch to it over the youtek prestige mid plus but I will give it a little more time before I decide for sure.

Forehand: I found it to have more plow compared to the youtek but not as forgiving and would drop some balls short every now and then. I play with a semi-western forehand with an open stance and mild topspin.

1HBH: For sure I enjoyed hitting my backhand a lot more with this frame simply because it has more mass behind it and the thin 19mm beam plus the smaller head size it just works better when hit well, most of my shots would stay in and with really nice depth. My backhand is hit with extreme eastern again with mild topspin and as the forehand I flatten them out when needed to hit a winner etc.

Serve: No question here the PSL GT again wins this category, the 1st set I was struggling with the serve a bit but boy when it started coming in it was just thawp after thwap, most of all my 2nd serve was spot on from start to finish I was hitting my spots with it and ran into about 2 double faults out of 3 sets.

Volley: Not much of a volley player yet, I would like to develope it more maybe this summer so I don't have any comments in this category but most poeple say this is a great racquet at net and I am sure it is so.

Currently trying to move some of my other racquets out and will be picking up a 2nd one of these, planning on stringing one with Prince Problend 16 (Kevlar setup) @ 60 pounds and the other with Babolat Pro Hurricane Tour 16 @ 60 pounds

Currently trying to move some of my other racquets out and will be picking up a 2nd one of these, planning on stringing one with Prince Problend 16 (Kevlar setup) @ 60 pounds and the other with Babolat Pro Hurricane Tour 16 @ 60 pounds

this racquet really begs for thinner strings...sometimes the 16 gauges in this racquet can feel a little bit much...
