Prediction :Del Potro will never regain late 09 form

I most likely will be proved wrong, but i feel as though he screwed his career playing the AO last year, and you can see that he is just not good enough to compete at the top echelon of the game right now, and may not ever return to that sort of form.

I personally think he should play some challengers and regain his confidence. He most likely will go out really early in Melbourne, and after that he should just take a break and do what Agassi did - play lots and lots of challengers and work on his fitness.

Talk about a kneejerk reaction.

My prediction is the opposite, by the way, I think he'll be playing well very soon, as late as Miami.

just wondering if you have wikipedia posted to your forehead.

Mustard must be one of those Tennis Historians...which seems much better than all the other historian jobs!

Also I do see Delpo coming back....but not a riduclous pace...he did well in Sydney!

It's funny to make a prediction and then have the first line of your post be "I will most likely be proved wrong."

He has no physical problems now. He just needs some time to get back into things.
Though he lost the last match it's tough to play a 3+ hour match as a first match in months and then be ready for the next match.
Looking forward, he should be able to reach a higher level, though he has a USO in his pocket he can get better, many areas he can improve.

Watching the highlights of the Feli match, I really do think he will regain 09 form. It was always going to be harder even with his 09 form to win the following year because more people are aware of his particular skill set and plan for them. Play him like Murray does that is, but at the same time Del Potro has always seemed very willing to learn and improve himself.

But from what I saw of those highlights, he was actually moving decently. And he still had his awesome running forehand. There was actually a smoothness (if that's the word) to his movement that wasn't there before, so I think it's just a matter of getting some match play in. He'll definitely be a contender this year.

Disagree

He is only 22 years old. Which means he has the most precious commodity - time. If he was 32, then maybe you might be right.

Seems to me he just needs to get matches in to get back in form. You might not see him in top form until the US Open this year.

I most likely will be proved wrong,

I hope so. Tennis needs him...to keep the two giants humble.

Don't know if he'll ever get back to 09 level, but I believe he'll get back into the top 10.

Does anyone know what his actual injury was? All I ever heard was that he had wrist surgery, but no report on what ailment made surgery necessary.

USO is the only tournament where his form looked impressive anyway. It wasn't that good in other events even in 2009 (it was fine but certainly not amazing, let's not forget Delpo has never won a master for instance, so even in 2009 he didn't confirm that USO wasn't just a one off).

I wouldnt go that far. His play at the 2009 French where he made the semis and badly overpowered Federer for 3 sets before losing due to inferior fitness, 2010 Tennis Masters final where he made the final, 2009 Canadian Open where he beat Nadal and Roddick to make the final before nearly beating Murray but again running out of gas were all impressive performances. So he had many very good performances in 2009.

However he is overrated. He has never won a Masters and his U.S Open title is his only title bigger than a Masters 500. He has never been more than World #5 (except for a very short blip at #4 in early 2010) and is owned by both Djokovic and Murray in head to head.

I mean how well he played in some tournaments prior to his 2004 AO run?

The Australian Open was Safin's first tournament in 2004.

Safin's tournament results in 2003
QF - Sydney
R32 - Australian Open
R16 - Rotterdam
R16 - Dubai
R16 - Indian Wells
R64 - Miami
F - Barcelona
R32 - Valencia
R32 - Los Angeles
R32 - Moscow
R32 - Lyon
R64 - Madrid Indoor
R32 - St. Petersburg

That's why I said fine but not amazing: semi, final, all good but not a win, so not a confirmation that the USO is something else than an isolated "coup".

Yeah but the 2009 French and 2009 Canadian he played well enough to win but his lack of endurance cost him both events. I guess that is one of his many limitations though. He is indeed quite overrated by some fans here.

I've been debating with a good tennis-playing friend this very point. My friend loves Del Potro and thinks he will quickly get back to top form and be one of the top 3 or 4 players in the world and be contending for Slams.

I tend to think that he is defintely young enough and talented enough to get back to where he was. But, missing all that time makes the climb back tougher in my mind. There's a lot to be said for continuity and missing a whole year is a really big deal IMO.

I guess, if he's willing to put in the work and is very motivated, I assume he'll be a Top 5 player again, contending for Slams and beating top players. But, I don't know that much about him personally and what sort of hunger he has. He's so laid back anyway, it's tought to tell how much he really wants to climb to the top of the mountain again.

Oh how opinions change. When Delpo beat Feli, all of a sudden he was BACK, and gonna win everything (exaggeration). Now that he's out, all of a sudden he's back to being where he was 2-3 days ago.

I've been saying this all along, he needs to do some challengers and 250 events until the French. (Yes do the 1000 and majors, free points)

Being match ready is going to take some time. He is not returning well at all so far. He should plan for the summer.

Also he is going to have a lot of bad seeding in tourneys. Second round top 5 will not be nice to him right now.

Also he needs to worry about his ranking, he will have medical passes for a while - they will dry up. He cannot even focus on winning majors right now, just getting some points so he can be seeded.

looked out of energy in early 2nd set of his mayer match. Looks good otherwise....from the highlights. :)

his stationary fh looks pretty big in the highlights. Nadal needs to take a few more HC slams this year. :)

Did he play any events in 2004 prior to the AO?

I am with Del Potro all the way. He was the guy I was looking at even before that classic FO semi with Federer, to be the guy that may just start taking cracks at Fedal.

I'll be cheering him on in every match he plays, I like his style, its just awesome!!!! I know he won't win the AO this year, and probably really won't even be a contender for a slam until the USO at least, but I'm still rooting for him. :)

His first pair of matches showed that he can, at least, compete well with players in the 30-40 range right now, admittedly not near his best.

If so, why in the world would he go play Challengers? He should play a normal ATP schedule that a Top 50 guy would play(i.e., all the big events, some 250s as well) and work his way back up as high as he can -- which appears to be what he intends.

It's pretty good at this stage to compete at the level he is.
It's just the first tournament back and these players at the number 50 level are no slouches.
He has a very high upside so should improve quickly.
He wouldn't give any excuses for the loss except that he was outplayed, I really appreciate that kind of character.

I don't know if he will ever be as good as he was in 2009, but it's definitely NOT a longshot. He has ridiculous potential and can hit the fuzz off the ball. Im sure he will work his way back into the top 10 this year.

Why would he be on top of the sport (if you mean the very top, like #1) with his 2009 level? He was only #5 in the World at years end with his 2009 level. All the comments that come seem to suggest Del Potro is overrated quite a bit on this forum.

The guy has played just over 4 matches in the last 12 months, you seriously cannot write him off this early. He's young, and talented. Yes it might take him some time to get back to his peak, but he beat Lopez earlier this week, and he is top 30. So it cant be all that bad for him

He said LATE 2009. When he beat down Ralph like he was a college player.
