Question is how much? I realize that Federer was playing bad the 2 times they have played and Simon was playing maybe as good as he can play. Is an upset possible?

I remember both matches Federer lost to Simon, he was shanking an incredible number of forehands, played just about as miserably as he can whilst Simon was enjoying the time of his life.

No such thing will happen again. I'd be shocked if Federer lost a set to Simon this time, I'd be surprised if one of the set went to a tie-break

No, Simon will maybe take a set just because Fed seems to traditionally struggle a bit with counterpunchers. However Fed has been varying his game as oppose to his 08' form that featured him sticking more close to the baseline

I remember those matches too, in 2008 at Toronto and the Masters Cup. Although Federer wasn't near his best, he still looked like he'd win both of those matches comfortably and ended up flat on his face both times. He's still not beaten Simon, remarkably.

He really won't. I expect a three set win for Roger if the match happens and one or two of the sets won't even be close.

This matchup is being overhyped. Sure Simon won their previous 2 meetings, but that was a long time ago and I think Fed will breeze past him if they do meet at the AO.

1) Simon was at his peak back then. He also beat Nadal indoors and nearly beat Murray in the final of the same event. Simon hasn't done anything since.
2) Fed was crap back then, losing to Karlovic as well. He lost every bit of confidence after that Wimbledon final and gained it only at the USO.
3) Its a best of 5 match, and a slam, and its Roger at a slam. Unless your name is Nadal your chances aren't very high.

If you still think that, you didn't see him play last night/this morning (and win the Sydney championship, in two sets).

I remember those two matches, and Roger was shanking forehands and playing with no focus. Simon is playing fast, and aggressively.

I'm thrilled that Roger and Coach Paul appear to have been working hard this week and pleased with their progress. But I don't think Roger can afford to let his concentration lapse for a second.

Federer also lost for the first time to Karlovic and Blake that summer, but went on to win the US Open. Those matches dont prove anything.

Unlike Rafa fans, ****s do not make excuses for Fed's losses.

The-Champ, I didnt make any excuses. I am also not a "****". Nadal lost his last match to Garcia-Lopez. Would you say the same result is likely if they played in a Major tournament? It was great win for Garcia-Lopez, but still it doesnt prove anything about whether the guy can beat Nadal at a big tournament. That was my point.

Simon sometimes does have the tendency to cause great players some trouble, but I don't think he will beat Federer. He might take a set though.

Everyone is beatable, Nadal and Federer are no exceptions. If Garcia-Lopez plays like he did...he'd beat Nadal.

Great Federer can't beat Simon on hardcourt, maybe hope another player take out SIMON before? Other great Federer fear trouble!

well he also lost to him at the year end championships .

Federer has been pretty bad early in slams lately and playing a guy he's never beaten before. I don't think he will lose but it's certainly a match to keep an eye on

Dude must be high LOL !!! ^^^^^ Simon has a 40% chance at winning. I remember in 08 where Simon beat Rafa,Murray,Novak,Federer. He also knocked federer out at the WTF that same year

Exactly! Simon has the reputation of being a giant slayer. He does not seem to be intimidated by highly seeded players... in fact he seems to thrive when playing them.

Federer could not have drawn a worse player for his second round.

Could be worse maybe but yeah the draw was not so kind to Fed in the early matches; first round gets Lacko who just bagelled Nadal and second round Simon who just won a tourney (and has beaten him twice before).

He'll need to be on his toes early; still my hunch is that Lacko is more likely to get a set than Simon; Fed will be fully concentrated to take on Simon which normally spells bad news. Expect some good rallies tho'.

Simon is Fast and Roger hates slow balls. so this one should be close. Roger actually does better with Big fast flat type of balls coming at him like from Berdy or robin. Federer hates creating his own pace off slow no pace nerf balls like from Simon.

Simon also has the ability to hit hard and flat as well (I think he's taken a page out of Rafa's playbook with Federer). His serve has also improved since he played Federer a couple of years ago.

Simon has the type of game that can hurt Federer. He's got an excellent serve, moves extremely well, can hit deep loopy balls and possesses excellent defense. In fact, he's almost like a mini-Djokovic.

I predict Fed will have his hands full with Simon.

For once I agree with you. Federer will walk all over Simon most likely.

Or Soderling, or Berdych, or Djokovic...

A washed up former top 10 player isnt close to even those guys. And lets face it, it would be a miracle if Berdych ever beats Federer in a slam again and a surprise if Soderling does (they would probably have to play again at the French for that to be possible).

I watched the sydney final today and Simon had his hands full against Troicki. He played good tennis but I didnt see anything from Simon that was extraordinary and indicative of a big AO run.

NadalAgassi: I don't know but Fed has been more vulnerable than usual in slams lately. Age will affect him in best of 5 more than in best of 3. Even if he does well at AO, the general trend we observed last year is likely to continue but we'll see.

What you are saying makes sense of course. However I think Federer has been playing alot better since he hooked up with Annacone. What is the worst loss he has had since Wimbledon? Losses to Murray and Djokovic. That is pretty great for a worst performance in that long a span when you think about it. He has been the most consistent performer since after Wimbledon, even over Nadal (Nadal of course won the biggest title since at the U.S Open). Compare that to Federer's play from February-July which was a mess. That is why I dont think you will see a Berdych or even Soderling beat him in a slam anytime soon, and someone like Djokovic or Murray will need to come up with something special to pull it off. I am not a Federer fan in the least but that is what I see for now atleast.

Of course father time will keep ticking but Federer's improved form will last atleast a bit longer I expect.

Really? So that day off between matches doesn't help in any way?

Troicki is one of the hottest players on tour right now, winning the DC for Serbia. He's also just attained a career high ranking of #26. Simon beat Troicki in straight sets.

He also beat Gulbis (#20) in straight sets, bagelling him in 16 minutes in the second.

I predict Simon will be back in the top 10 very soon.

He didn't look very hot when Federer sent him packing 6-2 6-2 in Doha.

In regards to todays match, sure it was a straight set win but it wasn't a dominant performance at all was it? 7-5 7-6 with Troicki blowing lots and lots of opportunities, which is of course, very typical of him.

My point is he's playing much better than his current ranking (#34) suggests. He straight-setted both the #20 and #26 players back to back.

He's also a nightmare matchup for Federer as the 2-0 H2H suggests ;)

Simon is probably the worst player Federer could have drawn for an early round match.

No objections from me on that one, amigo.

I'm sure playing Simon won't be a walk in the park from Federer, but I am very impressed with Federer's recent form.

Just because Simon has 2-0 against Federer h2h doesn`t mean a lot.
It`s a bit like Hrbaty against Federer a couple years ago at Wimbledon where he had 2-0 h2h against Federer coming into the match and it was clear from the start that it will be 2-1.

its a difference between playing on 250-500 tournaments and grand slams.federer and all the pro's trying different tactics on tournaments.on grandslams they come with their best.

Federer will give him 6-2 6-2 6-0
