Just looked at the new nike line for 2012. Some of the fed stuff looked awesome. However the prices not so much. The new cost for a federer polo is 84. This year, it was 80 dollars. Also at the start of 2011, you could buy a fed crew for 70 dollars. I bought the blue madrid one, 70 dollars. Later on, I bought the red federer us open crew, this one was 75 dollars.

Nike raised the price for crews by 5 dollars in the same year, and next year they are going to charge even more for polos. The materials are not getting any better, so why are the charging more? Also the economy is not so great currently, so once again why the inc. in price?

thoughts guys

Actually all companys, including adidas are raising prices in 2012. Many luxury companys(chanel,LV etc.) are also raising prices because of the rising value of gold and silver. Same with Athletic wear companys- because of the price of the material they must raise prices.

The Fed crew is cheaper because the crew is cheaper to make. Polos always cost more.

I thought the polos were more expensive because only rich country clubbers wear polos and they can afford it.

JKing, of course! :)

LOL :) Its called inflation. As the value of the dollar decreases you have to pay more money for the same things. Its been going on for years but has been thrown into hypedrive in the last few years for a variety of reasons. A lot being that there seems to be some crazy belief now that you can print all you want and it will still hold its value.

nike knows they can charge that much. so they do

This. Roger Federer is a gigantic selling point. People buy Federer polos and hats like people bought Agassi jean shorts back in the early 90's.

I've noticed it's gotten to the point where small sports stores in my area that aren't known for tennis at all, and usually just carry entry level racquets, are loaded with BLX Six.One Tours. They just know they'll sell. It's funny because they stick out so blatantly from the few basic pre-strung racquets on the rack.

yeah, Nike is really playing the Fed card well
they even sell plastic shoes now (vaport 8), where is the leather in those shoes? serieously????
I remember sneakers used to be much more confortable and fabrics were of better quality
it started to change with that lunarlite and flywire tech
it's cheaper and they still sell it as an advanced new technology

This is gross but Nike knows that this mean more $ to them since Fed's stuff are so demanded and there are people like me who buy almost only them for tennis :(

For every one person who complains about Nike's new prices there are 100 people who don't care. Because of that they will continue to do what they do.

just go with ADIDAS! nike is just a huge marketing company...they don't care about the little guy.

How is Adidas not the same exact thing?

I'm not putting them down because I like their apparel and they don't run a size small like Nike, but they're actually a bigger company than Nike right now.

Also, to the op - Why not just wait until those Federer Crews and Polos are off season and they slash the prices? That's what I do with the Adidas Barricade shorts.

No sense in paying 45-47 bucks for the shorts when I can wait until the new line comes out for the next season and get em for close to 20 bucks cheaper.

Adidas gt up to much worse... they stick it to people wherever they can. They sponsored the NZ All Blacks rugby team and for that privilege the official jerseys are roughly double the price in NZ as you can get them elsewhere. They even went as far as blocking global online sellers from shipping to NZ. Their reasoning: the shirts are popular locally (in NZ) so we can charge more... It has resulted in massive boycotts of the local retailers (and by some retailers also) on the eve of the rugby world cup.

But for trying to make some extra dollars from the supporters they basically ruined a decade of goodwill. Adidas sales across the board have dropped significantly in NZ's biggest sporting chains since.

Now, imagine if Federer shirts were twice the price as everywhere else in Switzerland....

+0.5. The rich part is right; not so sure about the CC part - I think CC's are on the way down. But, while empathizing with the un/under-employed, there are still many of us (knock on wood) doing well.

This. Roger Federer is a gigantic selling point.
And won't be around forever. Nike is going to make what they can, while they can, off of the RF brand.

When I restarted playing tennis again, Fed's polo was $65 in 2009, fast forward to 2011, it's already $80.

Nike is slowly killing its own tennis market share, good job, Nike!!!

But interestingly retailers are given more room to discount their Nike/Adidas womens line in Asia. Whereas popular mens items such as the kobe shoe or AF1 are pretty much fixed priced.

The American $$$ is worth less because of our monetary policy of printing which causes inflation. Unfortunately, Nike won't be raising the price just by what they will incur in extra costs, they're apparently raising it well beyond that point. The tennis crowd is very affluent typically so I'm sure they figure this won't hurt their numbers, but they'll definitely lose some customers if they continue to jack the prices. If they didn't think they could sell the stuff at these prices they wouldn't be doing it, and if people keep buying they don't care, they make more in the end if people buy those $80 polos.

I find wonderful that the US can just print more money!! Seriously, who is going to hurt? Creditors? They are obliged to concede, and eventually will agree to forgive/forget any debt....

Gas wont reach $10 until wages are increased a lot more due to inflation. Here economics in a few sentences. Currently we are using crude oil to make gas which runs around $3.50 a gallon today right? Well in Canada theres an oil reserve that equals the number of crude oil reserves in the world and this area is called the Canadian oil sands. Once gas reaches around the $5 mark it will be profitable to go refine that oil into gas therefore opening up a giant new resource of oil. prices will go down due to the influx of oil and eventually settle until disturbed by another factor. So main point is gas may rise due to inflation but by that time wages would already be up as well.

Why are you keeping talking gas? what happened to alternative energy sources? Solar panels, electric cars?

My family does most of our business with the Alberta Oil Sands, and it's a total blessing! Our gas is around $1.20 per Litre right now, so even though we have the oil sands in our own back yards, we are still paying a fair bit for gas!

This is only true if there are no QE3, 4, 5..... QE X till who knows when. Go case study what happened to Brazil when they keep increasing money supply until it hits hyper inflation. If the Fed reserve keeps printing money eventually all major commodities will increase in price and out pace real purchasing power of the average american. Hyper inflation is just a scenario but $10 a gallon gas is very real.

Oil is an imported commodity and for every cent the dollar devalue it will be reflected on the price. If economics is as simple as inflating your way out of any problems there would not be a recession, but in fact it is not true. Just look at what QE1 and QE2 has done to the economy.

the prices are going up simply because of inflation. the dollar is being devalued and printed on a level never seen before. combined with this is nikes elasticity of demand. they know their customers are not as affected by price as discount retailers.

as for gas prices they will go up. the only reason they are not going up as fast as other things is because ppl are cutting backl, decreasing demand. this is the only reason gas will be held down. even if gas goes above 5 dollars it still wont make the oil sands viable. because once it is that high, all the equipment and nessecary items will cost much more and keep the oil sands out of reach.

as for wages, they will keep going down in america. if you understand how the money is being printed you can see why prices are going up, but wages are not. the fed only lends money to banks at 0 percent. they then take this money and use it to speculate in many markets, including commodities. then they use leverage in these markets creating quadrillions in derivatives jacking up the price of cotton and other materials used in nike products. nike has no choice to raise prices. rich ppl buying 80 dollar shirts that they could get next year for 30 will buy them. its the rich ppl that benefit from this money printing. it is the poor that are hurt. high end brands are doing fine in this economy, but places like walmart are not having as good of profits.

anyone complaining about nike prices should not be buying it. i only buy last years stuff at a discount, most likely at a discount retailer like ross or or tj max. i do like their shoes, but only buy colorways on sale and make sure it has a 6month warranty so i get 2 pair for the lower price.

there is nothing going down in price that isnt technology like computers. obviously it is the FED that is causing rising prices.

Yes, exactly!

You can blame Ben Bernanke for the increasing prices of just about everything (e.g., gas, food, clothing, etc.). All this printing of money is making the U.S. dollar worthless! :(

Nike apparently does not earn back what they put into the tennis market (including with what they pay their professionals)... in-fact one of the only reasons they are even in tennis is because phil knight loves the sport and tennis was one of their main sports when they began... they want to earn as much as they can off tennis that's why they're raising prices

First. Who are you?

Second, women gets a complete dress, I'm talking about men's polo, yes, one polyester shirt with buttons. Again, it's not a complete, 'dress".

Third, how are women's shoes cost more? Have you compared them? Have a look, it seems pretty equal to me.

Forth, good-bye!
