Uhmmm, you conveniently forget to mention the BILLIONS of dollars the ATP made by covering for Agassi and all the other high profile players they cover up for. But the ATP really doesn't give a hoot about the players and what they do to themselves phsically to play. So, YES, they are victims.....not the ATP as you would have us believe.

What Agassi took was a recreational drug. It had nothing to do with doping whatsoever.
To me the real scandalous revelation of Andre's book was the business of parents giving amphetamines to their kids to improve perf. That had everything to do with doping and gave blood curling insight into the mentality of adults pushing their kids into pro sport (for not so healthy reasons). Interestingly, this part of the book was totally ignored, the crystal meth anecdote being sensationalized instead, even though (or maybe because) it has nothing to do with cheating. Quite the opposite, Andre's perf plummeted while he was doing it.

Another interesting thing about Agassi's meth "confession" was the negative and un-supportive reaction to it by some current players, as opposed to the way some have reacted to more recent busts in different sports (bro love for Contador). One way to interpret their negative reaction is that Agassi basically blew the whistle on how players can and do get covered for by the powers that be. If he got away with it, why couldn't players today? If I had something to hide, and had a federation and perhaps a player's union covering up for me, I would be upset that Agassi let the world know that such things happen. I'm all for innocent until proven guilty, but the principle can, and has, also be used as a cloak by the guilty to hide from a naive or innocent public/fanbase.

roddick says he does charity promotion because agassi was his superstar friend, so he claimed nothing was wrong with agassi breaking laws.

You're right that there is never just one side to a story.

Agassi may not be as much of a victim as he claims in his book, but when a cover up of any nature occurs, it's not a question of which party to blame. It's all about the perspective it gives. All the parties are to blame as the cover up happened with their own agreement.

As in any organization, the verismillitude of the facts always come in a top-down direction. So when we know that a cover up happens, it's only natural to blame the higher ups for any non-disclosure.

Agassi's story is more than likely only the slight tip of an iceberg. It did put into perspective all the things that can still be covered today and we will never know.

Good post.

Also have to consider that whistleblowers coming forward like this can be really damaging to the reputation of sports or organizations of any kind. More reasons as to why some of the players reacted as they did.

It was really a big jab at the ATP. It did hurt the integrity of the sport, no matter how you look at it.

Come on now, he didn't have to spell it literally, did he?
He made himself clear enough - you can cheat and get away with it... you don't really believe he's pouring all his heart out in his book.

The common sense question to be raised is obvious: if he took that, lied about it and got away with it - what else did he take and no one says a word about?

amphetamines are a stimulant and long since banned because it enhances reactions, reduces fatigue and helps hand-eye coordination. It has been banned in baseball for ages.

There is nothing 'recreational' about Andre's amphetamine use.

And I think it probably wasnt the only drug he took either...Mr. "in the best shape of my life at 30+"

Marijuana, wine, booze in general...thats recreational.

Nothing 'recreational' about crack, coke, pcp, angel dust and crystal meth.

Matches? He only mentioned one instance where his father gave him a pill when he was a very young teenager and he claimed that he told his father he never wanted to do so again and his father obliged.

I have no idea how many times he used, I was just pointing out that he only talked about one instance. Apparently, you know for a fact that he used amphetamines in multiple matches.

Seems legit.
