Ferrer is 18-1 on the season so far...

Ferrer has won 3 title this year. Del Potro is playing some awfully good tennis again. Tsonga is playing fairly consistent tennis and won in Doha. That's a pretty tight race for the 5th spot in the rankings. Who will sit behind the big 4 at the end of the year: Ferrer, Del po, Tsonga or someone else? Your thoughts?

ferrer is very consistent but he doesn't have much upside. He rarely loses to a player outside the top15 and usually beats up those guys pretty badly but he just cannot win against the top4 (at least in matches that count).

Ferrer not beating top 4 plus Delpo anytime soon on any surface. He'll be parked in the 7th spot all year long.

Ferrer's titles don't count because he didn't have to face Nadal or Djokovic

I often misread both names too at first glance.

"Ferrer" means "blacksmith" but what does "Federer" mean? Sounds like a profession too.

I'll admit - I read this as Federer initially and came in to correct you, but realised I just read it wrong.

And I guess Ferrer just slipped under the radar with those wins - they weren't exactly *massive* tournaments, they were sort of outshone by other tournaments at the time like Brisbane (I believe), Memphis (even Marseille) and Dubai, but that really is impressive. Actually reminds me of how Soderling started 2011...before it went downhill.

Spanish and Latin players aren't going to give up a chance to play on clay. They almost always play the Golden Swing tournaments each year. The only exception being Nadal, who never seems to play an event after the Australian Open but before Indian Wells.

I have loved watching as much of the Golden Swing as I could because I'm not really well acquainted with the Latin players who make deep pushes in these tournaments.

I'm interested in the likelihood of Ferrer finishing Top 5 again this year though, Tsonga, DelPo and Berdych look almost certain to pass him.

Ferrer could profit in the clay season. He can beat Murray on clay. So if he lands in Murray's quarter he's in good shape.

I really don't get this sentiment. As has been noted in this thread, Ferrer is 18-1 on the year. He's 4th in the race (for points accumulated this year) ahead of all 3 of those others (and Murray fwiw). Plus the proper clay season is coming up, where Ferrer rates to do just fine, possibly better than those other 3 as well (I'd say quite likely better than Tsonga and Berdych).

So why are Tsonga, DelPo and Berdych "almost certain" to pass him? I'd say all 3 have a chance to possibly pass him, but it is far from a sure thing. He's got as good a chance of finishing top 5 as any of those other 3 imo.

Now try imaging what I went through during 2003 when I just started following tennis closely and I kept seeing Federer, Ferrero and Ferrer in livescores.

Because real men/tennis players are tall and muscular with huge serves and forehands who when hot can cream all over bona fide pushers that make up four of the supposed top 5. Ferrer's only "strength" is consistency, which is just a euphemism for mediocrity.

"feder" in German means "quill"...perhaps Rogi's ancestors were pioneers in the writing instrument business. Interesting enough, "blacksmith" in Russian translates to Kuznetsov.

I say both Tsonga and Delpo will finish ahead, because Ferrer always enters these smaller tournaments, where as Tsonga and Delpo are playing in the bigger tournaments against the best like in Dubai.
