Why does Federer play better when Nadal isn't in the draw?

Just an observation. Djokovic wasn't playing the tennis of his life and it was on grass, but usually Djokovic beats Federer. Apparently, when Nadal loses Federer realises he can actually win the tournament and raises his game. That's three slams already.

Wow. What a searing insight. When the cat's away the mice will play. Does it make any less of the mice that they were born not as cats? All God's creatures.

He played like crap during RG 2009. And he played like crap during the 2 matches following Rafa's defeat this Wimbledon.

Federer plays worse when Nadal is deleted. Roland Garros 2009 and even Wimbledon 2009, both featured federer playing multiple 5-setters. And this time we saw the frenchman win first 2 sets and Federer in a 4th set tie-breaker almost losing the match.

That's true, I do think though that mentally is helps him a bit. If Nadal is in the draw, you know Fed has got to be thinking about a strategy to beat Rafa in the semi or final, even if it's 3 or 4 matches away, it's almost like a road to the inevitable. Even as a fan, when Rafa's not in the draw I'm far more optimistic and relaxed about Fed's chances of going all the way, and I get the feeling Federer feel that too. There's a more of a match-by-match mentality, if that makes sense.

this assumed fact i think is a bit simplistic

djok has horrible record against fed on fast surfaces. even last yr even when djok was playin outta his mind, still struggled to beat fed at USO. this year, djok not playin as well. plus, fed likes grass a lot more than djok

sure, djok was fav for sf but i was bit confused ppl wrote fed off as much as they did. i was thinkin djok would win, but result did not surprise me

after nadz got knocked out, put $100 on fed to win at 11/4. lookin pretty good now

what about RG 2011? He beat the unbeatable Djokovic knowing full well Nadal was gonna be there in the final.

What were the five setters that he played Wimbledon 2009?

Federer lost one set all tournament (to grass specialist Kohlschreiber) before his final with Roddick in '09. I'll cut you some slack. Maybe Federer did play multiple five setters in that alternate universe you live in where Nadal is GOAT.

Did he play better in 2009 French Open. In fact Federer played better in 08 FO(just bad tattics in the final and Nadal was peaking) than he did 09 FO. Sturggled against every single player except Soderling.

Also didn't help Nadal lost in the draw.

Benneteau took it Roger....maybe Roger felt the pressure after Nadal lost.

Federer should have already lost several rounds ago. Dunno how that's "playing better"

Gets LUCKIER, I suppose.

Just putting it out there, Federer and Djokovic have never played at wimbledon against each other. You can't just out right state that Djokovic will win just because of their H2H this year, it was a throw up.

Nadal know he got no chance to win when Federer plays well.

"You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done."
