Murray: 'I don't have it'

'As the court was being prepared around him for the presentation ceremony, Murray could be seen saying, "I don't have it, I don't have it."

The "it" that he was referring to was his watch. Not a present from a loved one with much sentimental value, but a $2,000 (£1,250) designer watch, provided courtesy of his sponsor Rado.

The watch is actually worth much more to Murray, as part of a multi-million dollar deal with the Swiss watch maker, so it was probably to the relief of both player and sponsor that he found it in time to receive his silverware.'

Murray is becoming the consummate pro. Worked very hard to get where he is, now the spoils of war go the the winner.

Accounts for his personal company show he made £6.4m in sponsorship, merchandising and appearance fees over the preceding 12 months. As well as Rado, whose watch the 25-year-old hurriedly strapped on before lifting the trophy, Murray is sponsored by Adidas, tennis equipment manufacturer Head, car-maker Jaguar, and RBS.

I liked the fact Federer swapped his silver Rolex for a gold one at WO to match the trophy. THAT really is being the consummate professional.

Yes I spotted that too. The look of panic on his face.

Its amazing how these sponsorship contracts work.

His watch maker doesn't have something a little more high end, $2,000 isn't that much for a watch, you've got Rafa's silly 500k watch, and of course Fed's Rolex's are way up there too.

^^ Maybe that's the point, so if normal human beings see it and like it, they can afford it more than Rogers Rolex or Nadals Mille.

He was looking for his OG Gold Medal he wanted to wear it at the ceremony. He carries it around everywhere and wears it whenever anyone wants to take a pic of him with their kids or asks for an autograph.

I believe during the match he was asking for a peanut butter and jelly samwich.

Well normal human beings really don't need a watch do they, who doesn't have a cell phone, which comes with a free watch. And if you are going to spend 2,000 on one, which is stupid to me, then you clearly are doing it just for the status of it, and if you fall into that boat, then you are going to want the 10000 or 20000, etc.

Watches are just jewelry for men. No one complains that earrings or necklaces are dumb because "normaly human beings don't really need them."

Besides, watches are actually convenient. I don't always have my cell phone and it's a lot faster to glance at my wrist then take my phone out. It's also much less obnoxious in social settings.

And the watch companies don't expect you to spend half a mil on Nadal's watch. But if Nadal wears their watch, normal people will want the cheaper models.

It's just jewelry advertising.

I really don't see how owning an expensive watch is stupid. I have a steel white face Daytona that is worth more now than when bought three years ago. It hasn't gone up by much as it's not particularly rare or expensive , but how many other things can you use and wear on a daily basis that appreciate rather than depreciate?

That was the reason I asked about their other models, if they are paying Murray to advertise, you'd think it'd be a high end model.

If you like it great, but as an investment, I have a hard time believing someone is going to give you 10k for instance for something that you've been wearing for 3 years, that isn't rare, when for a few thousand more they can get a brand new one.

I happen to be a watch collector. I have bought and sold used ss Daytonas for 8k and the next week sell it for 11k. I still own a black face and a white face Daytona as well as a couple yellow gold ones. Pretty much a very collectable watch. It's the higher end Daytona that dont resell well. The stainless steel Daytona are like cash.

You can't just go to a store and buy one. No one has them. Hence the resale.

I bought an AP offshore watch. "End of days" model new for 12k. I sold it 7 years later for 45k.

It's a fun hobby. :)

Years ago, I bought a $24.95 Timex digital watch with a gold finish---it keeps perfect time. I just bought another one for a backup. I doubt if anyone will steal this things from my locker room....

I still wear my Timex too. It works perfectly fine when I want to turn my wrist over and see what time it is. I splurged and spent almost $30 on a Sportline watch because it has a timer, an alarm, a chrono timer, a calorie counter, and a heart rate monitor.

The most expensive rolex is probably the gmt master2 with full baguet diamonds all over the case and full pave diamond band. There were only 50 or so made. Close to 500k. I have worn it for an evening. Borrowed it from a friend who is a jeweler in NYC diamond district.

The white gold presidential roger usually wears is approx 17k-25k retail depending on the exact model.

Rafas watch retails 150-500k. Depending on the exact complication.

Sorry about the watch geek talk.... I have a pretty large collection.

I was kinda disappointed, when, in his panicked state, he didn't let fly with a customary expletive-laden tirade that we usually hear from him after losing a point.

its a wonder he wasn't suddenly reaching for his wrist as though it was injured..

The speed master professional is the only omega worth having.

hmm

I think the Omega Seamaster, given its pop culture cache and ties to James Bond is in the conversation.

I think it comes down to the movement if you are into that. Otherwise, pick the one you think looks good, because barring exotic metals and complications, they are all going to distill into the same basic design (form following function). Seriously, the Rolex Daytona, Speed Master and Tag Carrera all look basically the same. Same goes for any diving watch.

Omegas have a great coaxial Eta movement.
As for me I love my Tag Carrera as my daily. Can't go wrong with the Valjoux (or I guess the Calibre __ )

Staying on topic, Andy Murray is probably the only person smiling wider each time he went from a Ferrari, to an Aston, to a Jag.

Very interesting! I've always been a fan of watches, looking in high end places whenever I came across one. It's nice to look, although i've never really come close to affording one.

I got a U-Boat Flightdeck 50mm from my family for my 21'st birthday a few years ago, it's a beautiful thing.

I'd love a IWC Portuguese chronograph, one day maybe :)

Are their any good resources for watch collectors, like books or websites that
educate you about what is collectable and how prices develop? thanks

How much does that Omega cost ? their website has no price on them, very strange ? and Can we get a discount from Amazon or something like that ?

You call that a watch?
This is a watch:

Silicone-Cartoon-Watch-Wrist-Watch-NFSP020-.jpg

It tells the (approximate) time, and it has one complication: a friggin' monkey, in a friggin' suit!!!

I dare you to top that!

I say Good Day to you sir!

:):):)

PS: The monkey in a suit looks slightly more intelligent than the current James Bond, too.

Retail is around 4k. It is not a sought after model as in its plentiful. I can get it from my watch dealer 30% off. Never buy retail...

Well.... Sean Connery wore a rolex sunmariner. It was roger Moore that wore an omega. The James bond books have him wearing a Rolex. So I don't consider omega a bond watch imo.

Tags are nice watches but I don't own any.

Not really. Just watch forums. There are forums for all the major brands. You kinda have to ease into collecting watches. You look for limited edition models. Most are only available for purchase if the maker knows your a collector. The audemars shop in NYC knows me. I have bought close to 15 watches from them. They give me first dibs on any new watch they get in. Arrange a showing. The limited watches you can sell for more than you paid in most instances within a year.

My watch dealer in the diamond district can get me almost any watch new 30% off.

Hey Arche3, is a Rolex Oyster Perpetual DateJust of today any different internally to the same model that John Newcombe used to wear and promote in the 1970s and 80s? He used to feature heavily in the Rolex ads plastered all over TENNIS and WORLD TENNIS magazines.

Was TUDOR simply an affordable Rolex priced below the cheapest Rolex?
And what's the attraction of buying a watch in "white gold" when it looks much like a stainless steel version??

when you buy a watch, do you know that it will rise in price or is it an educated guess?
and do you mainly collect new or vintage watches?
hope you don´t mind my questions, but i´m a collector myself, mostly in tennis collectibles

The datejust is bigger now than before. Internally the movement is updated but it's basically the same. Just a date wheel.

A Tudor is sorta like a cheap Rolex. But it's not the same. Some have the same movement. But I do not know for sure if it's still true as I don't buy them.

You get a white gold or platinum watch because it's a precious metal. Because you can. They look the same apart from different dial and markers. But basically the same as stainless. But any watch guy can spot a white gold watch based on the dial and hands if they are familiar with the manufacturer.

I buy used modern watches mostly. Limited editions I buy new to wear for a year then resale.

Vintage watches are way too expensive to collect. Some fetch insane money.

I don't buy to resale other than the limited editions of certain brands where history as shown you can count on it rising in price. Rolex don't go up in price. The Daytona is the only truly collectable Rolex as you can always more or less sell it at what you paid.

So I buy watches I like to wear. But you always end up selling. Trading. Etc ... with other watch guys.

Nope. Rolex makes a boat load of watches per year. Example. A 20 year old gold president (day date) is worth very little it's original worth. If I try to sell a 1990s yellow gold day date like fed wears I think I can sell it for 5 or 6k. New in 1990, 15-18k.

But a vintage Daytona? Whole other story. It's nick named the Paul Newman watch. A vintage Daytona is like the holy grail of Rolex.
