Mikeler's Multis

Mikeler! hows it going buddy, in light of the RIP control price drop, would it still hold the same place in you reviews?

RIP Control at least in the 16g is just not for me. It has some very big strengths but also very big weaknesses. Plus, it is a PITA for me to string up.

hi mikeler. is 55lbs black mamba main and micro fibre cross are okay tension for 95sq.in. racquet? or 59 lbs? thanks in advance.

Don't be fooled by my avatar. I have always used 98 inch rackets or higher. I have not tried Black Mamba either so it is hard for me to say.

The Klip Legend I'm using is going to break soon. I put in a few string savers last night to prolong the life. RacquetTune shows less than 5% tension loss which is pretty darn impressive.

You must have done a good job keeping your gut racquet at home when it's wet. Legend lost 18% tension on me, but I noticed that most of the loss happened after playing in damp conditions.

I'm surprised that it hasn't lasted longer. Maybe it's the EXO3 ports doing what they are supposed to do, which is allow the strings to move. There's probably more sawing action with those racquets.

Is Legend worth the extra cost compared to your top multis?

I have been keeping my rackets in the trunk as little as possible. Luckily, I have not encountered any wet courts...yet.

Every string moves like crazy on me in the Exo. Thank goodness I only have mild OCD. There are 3 severe notches where I put string savers. I think there is another intersection or two that I'll slip them in tonight.

Not worth the extra cost or stringing effort IMHO. I hit with the Discho for a game this weekend and used Legend the rest of the time. I prefer the Discho but it was also strung 6 pounds lower. Considering how hard it is to get gut through the blocked holes of the Exo, I think the only gut I'll consider now is full Wilson gut again.

I think it's going to depend on several factors including the type of game you play and the racquet you use. On my PK Ki 5x, Legend gave me 2-3 times the playable life of a durable multi like DM or PPA. I didn't notice a big difference in playability, so the durability was the primary advantage of natural gut. Lately, I've been breaking multis prematurely on shanks, and gut is better able to absorb that kind of abuse, so for me that's another advantage of gut. The main drawback for me is keeping gut away from moisture. I'm still using multis as a backup for that reason.

On Mikeler's EXO3 racquet, the strings have more movement. I think friction plays a bigger role in wearing down strings with those racquets. The EXO3's have a reputation for being hard on strings, and I think it may be that gut wears down faster on those racquets because of the friction.

Pacific Classic is softer than Klip Legend, but it's wearing down a bit faster for me. My game has changed and gotten more aggressive, so I'm going to say that I can't compare them on durability, but Classic has shown that it is strong enough to withstand my shanks, so I'm sticking with some kind of natural gut as my go to string for now.

I did not get any extra time from Wilson gut in my PK 7Gs versus Discho or PPA so full beds of gut just don't make sense for my game. I'm guessing heavy spin just eats through gut too quickly.

Klip Legend is holding on barely. I used up all my string savers last night. Maybe I'll buy some more today and put them in.

I have only tried a few polys but BBO was by far the stiffest of the ones I tried. It has scared me from trying anything from Luxilon again.

Any posters here use a Volkl C10? Which of the top multis perform well in that racquet? Forgot what plush meant until demoing the C10.

I broke the Klip Legend last night. Was hoping that would break me out of my recent slump, but alas the problem is the player not the equipment.

I'm not going to write a review for it because it was just average in every respect. Perhaps if I strung it lower my experience would have been better.

Hey, Mike---I finally got my set of Discho Microfibre last week. It was impressive, but at 57 lbs (my usual tension for a soft multi), it felt way tight. So, you still think 54 is the magic number for this one? (I still owe you an ahi burger, or two.)

For the money....Pacific Classic is 100x better.

Classic 16 is definitely softer than Legend 16. I have about 8.5 hours on Classic now, and I think it's going to break in the next hour or two, but I've been breaking lots of strings lately, so I can't compare the durability to Legend, but I'm pretty sure it withstands shanks better than typical multis and lasts longer than multis too.

I don't think I play any better with Classic than I do with Legend. In fact, I think I might be better at the net with Legend because it's more crisp. Classic seems to have less power which is good and bad. I'm pleasantly surprised sometimes to see balls land just inside the baseline.

I'm going to try Tonic 16 and Classic 16L sometime in the near future. I'm not that optimistic about Classic 16L because the durability of the 16 gauge is not quite what I wanted, but I already bought it and might as well try it.

I think I do prefer Classic over Legend because of the softness. Playability is close. Durability is a question mark. I would not say it's 100x better.

Sometimes injuries actually improve your game.

I wish I could cite some kind of injury as a reason for the result last night but nothing was hurting me except my pride.

I went back down to 50 pounds last night on DM. In the cooler weather, 54 does not have quite the pop I like in the Exo. For me not to ace ssgator80 even once is a crime. :)

The Wilson gut had this huge sweet spot and very noticeable power and spin increase versus any multis I've used. I was expecting the same thing with the Klip but it was just very average. I don't want average for $26 a pack. Ssgator80 could buy 13 cans of crappy Penn Championship balls with that money.

What tension did you string it at?

I might be purchasing a new racquet with this string...will be my 1st experience with gut.

60 pounds on my lockout machine.

If you can go up to $140 or $150 per reel, I'd definitely get Discho Microfibre or Signum Pro Micronite.

those reels seem like hard to find... Signum only sells pricey reels in Europe, and Discho doesn't even have reels

is Ray out of bzness? he doesnt answer to my e-mail. i would like to buy a reel of micro fibre. How much is it `mikeler?

On the contrary, he is extremely busy. I'm not sure if he sells reels very often. He had to special order mine. I'm running low again now...

I just sent Ray an email today and got a quick response. He said there are some things coming out next year that he is excited about. Can't wait to hear about them.

Iontec Black plays really nice and comfortable for me.

I crossed it with Microfibre a couple of weeks ago and broke the Micro on a shank while still warming up. Planning on trying it again in the next few weeks.

Crazy how you broke a cross on a shank. I've only done that will full poly.

I know... The string snapped right at the top.
It felt really nice and I'm anxious to try it again.

The Iontec Black will surprise alot of people. It plays really comfortable and has great durability. So far, I don't feel any pain or twinges.

They're here...

These are the 3 prototype strings from Genesis. All look like high quality offerings:

^ any insight on what tension to string? would be useful seeing how you received a single set (unless you're very good at estimating).
