Has anyone ever tried fasting?

I tried it once for almost 6 hours. I got really hungry. Ate a large pizza.

Overall a very good experience.

I don't "fast", but I do severe restriction every now and again if I'm on a routine. So right now, I'm trying to gain 5lbs before May. At the moment I want to see how much fat I've gained, so I'm only going for 600cal today to make my body dump its water. I do not believe in "detox".

Check out Brad Pilon online. He wrote a book called Eat Stop Eat. There is a guy who blogs about intermittent fasting on a site called leangains.com. I've tried both approaches. It works pretty well.

Detox is a broad topic. Intermittent fasting promotes autophagy (breakdown and replacement of worn out cell components) which I suppose can be considered a type of detoxification. It also promotes detoxification in the sense that some toxins are stored in body fat, and anything that promotes utilization of body fat (such as fasting) will result in the toxins being released. However, if your liver isn't up to the challenge, this toxin release isn't a good thing.

Other than that, intermittent fasting is pretty good for promoting metabolic flexibility (ability to switch between fat and carbohydrate usage for energy). Many people are metabolically inflexible due to overeating in conjunction with a high carbohydrate intake. Intermittent fasting can help to reverse this.

Finally, keep in mind that most of the benefits associated with intermittent fasting are based on a relatively small amount of research, much of which is based on animals.

I second the recommendation for Brad Pilon's book. It's a good resource and is well referenced. And if I had to choose an intermittent fasting protocol to follow, it would probably be his.

I've done several 24-hour fasts. It's not so bad. . . but I suppose being Catholic helps in some kind of way. :)

I have heard that fasting results in the body going into "starvation mode" and reducing metabolic rate...

Is this true and is there a way to avoid this?

I've done lots of 24 hour fasts and one 48-hour fast. The latter one left me weak, tired and dizzy.

I suppose that it cleans you out but you can also accomplish this with mainly drinking liquids (with calories) for a few days.

I used to fast once a month for a day, 24-36hrs total before I eat again. Other than feeling like I'm starving, my body didn't really go into starvation mode. But if I were to just eat very very little per day for a week, my body starts to think it must be famine out there and then it's time to start storing more fat, and I get a little pooch on my tummy (normally I'm rather lean).

So I guess it's kinda true from my limited experience. As for avoiding it while one fasts, well I dunno...

About 10 years ago I tried fasting for a week. Nothing allowed but water and juicing vegetables and fruit. The idea was to give your digestive system a break.

First day I had headaches from no coffee, but after that, I was able to deal with it okay. Best time to try this is in the hot humid weather to sweat out a lot of the toxins. The theory is that the body will first eat up all the fat, then attack any diseased areas, but I don't know that this is true for a fact. I read about people fasting for 40 days to purify their systems, but there was no way I was about to try that.

I was healthy and not overweight, so I can't say if it really affected me or not, other than being hungry and losing about 11 pounds. It's easier if you can get a friend to fast with you at the same time for mental support.

The hardest part was going to a job and seeing a huge lunch spread and telling everyone I had to pass on it. Second hardest was turning down grilled brats and cold beer on a 90 degree day at a friend's house. Brutal.

That was the third year I fasted, but haven't since. Once a year is recommended, and 1 to 3 day juice fasting has been suggested more often.

My results were inconclusive, so I don't see myself doing this again anytime soon.

In the old days, famines did the job. These days, so-called progress has eliminated them, and see where we landed up.

This. If you are good with google you could possibly find an early version of Pilon's ESE book online and if you like it be sure to pay for the latest version as it is really good and worth the money imo.

Martin Berkhan is the leangains guy fwiw and there's a lot of good info on IM there for free.

The funniest thing about these fasting-detox threads is that, as in the current one, there isn't a single mention of what "toxins" anyone is talking about, or how fasting would promote their elimination. Fasting tends to DECREASE g.i. tract motility, so anything there in the small or large intestine that you're concerned about would tend to stay there LONGER as a result of fasting. Fasting also means that because you're not taking in nitrogen-containing material, your renal-urinary tract will slow down and you'll eliminate LESS waste by that route. The whole thing is a bunch of snake oil hokum.

Yeah, well when the snake oil salesmen look like this they tend to attract attention:

I don't believe 'everyone' is talking about toxins or detox wrt the benefits of fasting at least not Berkhan or Pilon whose opinions I respect the most on the subject.

Going along with vin's post, essentially the "detoxification" we see in fasting is related to autophagy and increased insulin sensitivity. Brad's book (especially his second book) has a lot of good research, but there isn't a lot of research yet about autophagy and human timetables

A good tell is changes in skin. Does your skin get softer? Do age spots and blemishes start to disappear? That's usually a sign of fasting promoting positive effects.

I bet it changed your life. You saw God after the fourth hour. Then you went back in time and ahead in time. Past, future and present all at once. :)

Detox from what? Won't you instantly re-tox once you go back to eating and drinking the normal filth we consume on a daily basis?

Does Slim-Fast count as fasting? :)

I did fast (no drink nor food) about 30 days in a row every year, for about 10 years or so. I usually fast from around 4 am to 6 pm. Sometimes it can be very exhausting as I had to cycle to school in the heat of the day. I never really got very sick because of it.

As I got older my religious view changed gradually and I no longer fast anymore... but now I sometime feel my digestion organs need a break and sometime I deliberately skip a meal if I don't feel really hungry. I only eat when I'm hungry and never eat too much.

I did the "John the Baptist Diet". Wandered around in the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights eating only locusts, wild honey, and protein shakes (careful to maintain my 2 grams per pound bodyweight protein intake).

After 40 days, I just lost my head.........

I saw a great documentary this year about fasting and its benefits. Apparently scientists in the USSR discovered potential benefits for treating a number of diseases this way, and there still are a number of "fasting centers" spread throughout Russia. People there fast for 2 weeks, nothing but water... They interviewed some of the "inmates" and they were mostly feeling great. They could even perform physical activity, and some said they could have lasted longer than 2 weeks.

Western scientists are only starting to research this (limited scientific interest so far makes sense: no company would have an interest in financing research on the benefits of fasting!!) But it is promising. If I recall correctly they performed tests on cancer stricken rats. Half the rats underwent chemiotherapy in a well fed state. The other half, after fasting for 48 hours. Apparently the fasting rats not only managed chemiotherapy side effects better, they also fought off cancerous cells more efficiently.

We still need a lot more research on fasting, that's for sure. But in my opinion the benefits are only logical: from an evolutionary perspective, our bodies are a lot more used to dealing with food scarcity than with an abundance of food.

Hi Mikail,

Would you mind sharing the name of the documentary? I'm interested in watching it.

Thanks

Hi vin,

unfortunately it's a German-French documentary so I think you can only find it in those two languages. The title in German is "Fasten und heilen" and in French "Le jeûne pour se soigner". If you can understand either language then a simple google search will give you a youtube link to the documentary...

Even at this point, fasting is still a home-bsed solution to problems. The real physiological advantages have literally only been observed in nematodes and singular species of mice. These said advantages do not even correlate to humans nor does the research intend it to. That last bit is crucial when studying anything and I mean ANYTHING related to health and fitness when it comes to research studies: did the scientists intend the data to apply to humans? If they did, did they state their opinions on the extrapolated data? The vast majority of scientists do not and have not. Much like the aspartame studies, there has not been a human study that has shown it to be harmful. It has been in lab animals OR in extreme quantities only. If fasting works for you, then go for it. I do say it truthfully when I say that if billions of people think it's the way to go, then there is definitely some merit.

Fasting is not for "Detox" like modern proponents claim, it's to give your organs REST. Mice that fast live 23% longer, those that fast once per week, the same as us doing it once per month.

Fasting also creates HGH

Mice put on starvation diets, basically periods of fasting lived 23% longer.

The reason is not detox, we don't need detox contrary to popular belief. The reason why it helps and lengthens your life is that when you eat, your heart, kidneys, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, etc. all have to WORK, so you age your body, by giving them rest your entire being rejuvinates itself. Also fasting produces HGH.

For Lent, I am fasting from sunup to sundown. It's not hard. I think it's a good physical thing for the body. Of course, the minimal "pain" reminds me of Christ's suffering and the value of His resurrection.

I have done intermitting fasting before. I never really felt hungry or like I was starving myself. Most of the time I felt amazing while I fasted, especially while working out or playing tennis. I was able to decrease my bodyfat % by 3 percent and have all of my lifts go up in weight.
