Steve Darcis, who beat Rafael nadal in the 1st round of Wimbledon : "I'm a bit surprised of course. It's only the 2nd Top 10 that I beat (along with Tomas Berdych in the 1st Round of the Olympic Games 2012) so yes it's one of my greatest victories. Rafa always battles until the last point so it's difficult. I served well and it helped me a lot. Of course, he didn't play his best tennis. No one beats him when he plays his best tennis. But I also knew that it was his first match on grass while I already played 4. I had good feelings from the beginning and that he didn't. I had to start well otherwise I'd have no chance against him. I'm really happy. It's for these matches that I play tennis. I had a lot of injuries and trouble in my career, which explains my ranking (#135) mais I'm still motivated and I hope I'll continue"

No matter how many threads you make, its not going to prove that RNadal wasn't outplayed by SDarcis.

Too humble. Darcis deserves to be considered as GGAOT (grass goat)!

Did he say "Of course Nadal wasn't in a good shape, otherwise he's unbeatable"

or

"Of course, he didn't play his best tennis. No one beats him when he plays his best tennis" ?

They have vastly different meanings. One (the second one) is stating the obvious, the other (the first one) could have a surreptitiously imparted meaning added onto it through possibly partisan translation.

He said the latter. I saw the interview on ESPN.

Another butt hurt fraud misconstruing information.

The guy who beat Nadal said himself that he didn't play well.

Doesn't matter. It is RNadal's problem that he didn't show up 100%, bot SDarcis'. Then why are people robbing SDarcis' credit in the win? Can you answer that?

Darcis took his chance and had grass and feel in his system , well done.. the guy also is humble and knows that Rafa came a bit unprepared and thats a fact.

no one beats roger federer when he's in top form. no one beats novak djokovic when he's in top form. actually, just fill in the name of any player who has been at the top of any sport, for any period of time. or any team, for that matter . . . and there you go.

what a stunning revelation.

Hey, if I play my best tennis, I'm also unbeatable.

It's just that I've yet to play my best tennis yet in my life. :)

Well I agree with the part that Nadal played like crap, but I got to disagree with the second one, stating that Nadal is unbeatable when playing his best.

That is well true on clay though, but not on HC or grass.

This.

And in fact, for any player, 90% (or more) of the time they DON'T play their absolute best level tennis.

That is why it is so important to be able to win matches when you are NOT playing your best tennis (that is, the majority of the matches any player will play).

True great players make their opponents not able to play their best tennis.

What is Darcis implying with that line? How arrogant of him.

This thread left me wondering what happens when two super-healthy top players meet in a match against each other? Obviously, one has to win and the other has to lose, but the one who loses can't make excuses they weren't in top form, no? .... Can OP please explain this?

Wrong, Nadal beats Roger Federer when Federer is in top form.

No need to get defensive, Steve. Nadal always struggled in the first rounds at Wimbledon, he just didn't luck it out this time.

Federer wasn't in peak form for any of 2008.

Clay and grass, he was near or at his best. He won Estoril, made finals of Monte Carlo, Hamburg and French Open (losing to Nadal in all 3), lost to Stepanek in Rome (no worse than losing to Volandri in 2007), won Halle, and finished runner-up of Wimbledon to Nadal (not losing a set before the final).

nobody beats federer on top form everytime nadal beat federer he was not on top form thats the logic im getting from nadal fans for there hero i use the same logic

There's struggling in the first week in Wimbledon, and there's losing in straight sets against a player ranked 135.

Yep. Nadal doesn't lose to Darcis or Rosol if he's healthy. I don't care what these haters say.

These haters? You are the one who has been predicting Nadal would lose every match for the past two years! Don't be a hypocrite!

True, that sucks, but it's not winning 4 games in a best of 5 set grand Slam final! I say there's a big difference, a huge difference. There was a reason Fed was written off after his loss at AO2009.

Amazing how you took this opportunity to bash RFederer.
Do you know the difference between losing to a 2nd ranked player and losing to a 135th ranked player?
Do you know the difference between losing in the final and losing in the first round?

Only fools write champions like RFederer and RNadal off.

Well, my point is, this loss cannot be explained with the fact he struggled in some matches in the past. He still won the and made 5 finals in a row. He now lost to a player ranked 135, who isn't even the typical player who's a problem for him (big server, etc.), in straight sets.

And it's the second year in a row that basically the same thing happens. Haters might not want to see it, but that just doesn't happen under normal circumstances.

It's not like he won those tough matches before because of luck or something. Think of his matches against Gulbis. All of them tough, close matches, all won by Nadal. No coincidence.

I really don't like the title of this thread.. The implication is clear and quite misleading.

In fact, I have avoided this thread all day on the assumption it would be related to Rafa's health or knee or similar based purely on the title of the thread.

(this being the same guy who was running around like the energiser bunny two weeks ago and has only practiced since)

turns out it merely featured the remarkable assertion that Rafa is unbeatable when he is winning..

There is a part of interview about Wimbledon's results on my tennis blog. Hope, you will find it interesting:
"....And Rafael Nadal's forehand wasn’t catching the spin he expected....

And there you have it: Without the ability to leverage his spaghetti stringing, Nadal is a fun-to-watch, middle-tier Spaniard owned all day long by Ferrer. Maybe with a few French Opens.

And Fed has three more FOs and 20 Grand Slams.

He never said anything like this thread title.

question: where you surprised today?

his answer : yes a little bit

question: why did you think you won today?

his answer : today i could use a lot of slice and i think he did not like it so much,of course he did not play his best tennis.

question: you said he did not play his best tennis did he seem physically alright today with his knee? was he limping?

his answer: physically he looked ok,he was moving and running good,of course you dont beat nadal when he plays his best i think...(this means he could not have beat him if nadal played his best tennis, not nadal is unbeatable, which is a well known story in grass),I know the first match in grass is always difficult, i don't know if he injured then you must ask him.
