haha you dont see too many of the fat yinzers on the courts. those court numbers are skewed, of course. Added that everytime ive played tennis in dc i had to wait for courts and pittsburgh has 0 waiting time even for pristine red clay. So ill take the chubby yinzers anyway

ok, going too sand down the ki15 from 4 5/8 to 4 3/8. wondering if I should use my dremel? I don't get to use it much. hehe.
or I can do it the boring way and just get a #3 sandpaper with a small wooden block.

Don't do it! Grow bigger mitts!:twisted: haha Borrow some from Striker - he's too busy watching Sloane and currently has flat tires on his wheels!

i've never heard of yinzers before. interesting.

i've tried playing on dc public courts before and i have noticed it can get crowded. so i agree about that. also didn't know pitt had red clay courts too. so it's very possible that pitt is underrated in terms of being a tennis hotspot. but at the end of the day, you are still playing tennis in pittsburgh. with a bunch of yinzers. whatever that means.

cb - you may wanna try those super thin replacement grips that babolat and prince makes. might save you the effort and possible destruction of a racquet.

what's for lunch people? i'm starving and i can't get up.

0 wait time? Can't fill the courts, heh? Too bad.

I grew up in san diego, went to college at USC and lived in spain for a year. But remain ignorant, keep it empty so we can enjoy the beautiful free red clay courts :)

Grew up in rural Arkansas, went to college at the University of Elvisville and lived in Spain for 3 years. Played on that red stuff; it's really a good surface for slow players who drop and lob, lob and drop, and 3.0 women. Which are you????

And Elvisville has 3 public facilities with covered courts, even though we can play outside pretty much year round. Those slow drop lobbers and 3.0 women join one of the numerous private clubs for their clay-court croquet matches.

Tennistown USA? Probably Atlanta, but you Pittsburghers can claim whatever glory you wish as long as your Pirates stay ahead of those punk Cardinals in the NL Central.

Oh, and Have A Nice Day. :)

Didn't think about Atlanta, never been there but assuming because of the young population and the weather tennis is awesome. Probably a good call.

Side note: Who would rather wait for a court? Dumb.

Could be a good reason why there's zero wait time: too many of those "yinzers" Monkey posted pics of - they're definitely not taking up those clay courts. Those guys, if they play at all, would much prefer faster courts offensive shots would dictate play not defense and grind it out points. Seen a 300 pounder grind out points? Prolly not a pretty sight.

ALTA (Atlanta League Tennis Association) has more than 50,000 members last I checked, and it is not affiliated with USTA. Its membership is larger than the entire USTA Southern Section combined.

And I graduated Summa Cum Laude, with Honors in English, and scored a 74 on Millers Analogies Test (Mensa cutoff is 66), so I ain't dumb. I reserve the courts in advance. Duh.

Again, Have A Nice Day.

red clay. i'm a drop lobber. guilty as charged.

i think the city that gets BLUE clay courts wins but i know rafa won't like it.

i've resorted to having soup for lunch. also went to this salad place called chopt yesterday. fairly expensive for salad and kinda like chipotle - but for salad. very complicated ordering process too. took the lady in front of me in line about 3 minutes to explain her order and how she wanted it prepared and where she wanted her dressing placed and the number of times she wanted her lettuce chopt. i had some avocado and palm root kinda salad with shrimp. it was good. i've had better salads though.

*yawn*

somebody's bored in pittsburgh. nobody to play tennis with on the courts. but the good part is there is ZERO waiting when he/she does find someone to play with.

there should be a tennis warehouse pittsburgh/yinzers only chapter.

has anyone seen downs? or topaz? or wookie?

Before Sap posts a picture of Del Potro falling down and wincing.

He's ok.. (no spoiler). Go Nike!

Speaking of wincing. I played three practice sets with my mixed partner S. I tried every suggestion given here and two observing coaches tried to intervene. Each set went to 6-4. The coaches took me aside at the bar and said ..."there some players you just can't teach" to deal with pressure.

Which made me whistle the opening to Guns and Roses ... Civil war.

"What we've got here is failure to
communicate.
Some men you just can't reach...
So, you get what we had here last week,
which is the way he wants it!
Well, he gets it!
N' I don't like it any more than you men."

..... Topaz, I almost spit out my beer at the bar when they suggested i go "hero" during the last couple games.

Interesting.

Funny. I still feel the pain as if it were yesterday...

i think you have mentioned this more than a few times. does the memory of it still haunt you?

OR was it just an amazing rendonkulous shot?

OR something you have never seen before on a tennis court?

ALL of the above?

Took my boy to a pediatric dentist this morning. He came out with stickers, motorized toothbrush, kids floss, toothpaste, some kind of toy that shoots a disc, a rubber bracelet, and a goody bag to put it in. i don't remember having these kinds of things when i was a kid.

i turn 40 soon and i think i have to get a colonoscopy. i'm pretty sure i don't get a goody bag. and i'm pretty sure they are going to shove toys into my naughty bag.

I heard they give you a puppet toy .. which you later use to describe where the bad man touched you.

p.s. which reminds me of the episode of family guy where Peter sues the doctor because of a prostate exam.

I've been gone for a couple days and catching up so here I go.

Pittsburgh sucks. Yinzers, red clay or not. Eff that place and eff Ben RothelkjbsdglhnsdflgjkhasdlfkjnasfkjlkajSDflkjlaskdfbgburger.

Yonex 850 is good cheaper multi with short life span. Always had to string it a couple pounds tighter that other stuff.

People are slipipng all over the place in crappy shoes.

300 pounders do not grind out points. We hit hard serves and blast forehands. No need to volley or hit backhands.

To win at mixed above 7.5 you pretty much have to pluck the guy in the gonads and attack the physically inferior woman. Lesbian or not they will not be as strong as a dude regardless of sexuality.

Im tired of hearing about this legendary dropper lobber thingy. If there is no video leave it be.

My firnd wants that Pink Floyd Prism symbol on one of the black arm sleeves all these guys are wearing nowadays. Where can he get it?

There is a 94.35% chance you will not be able to sand down a grip and have all bvels perfefctly equal. Unless you have an electronic lathe and milling machine. You basically have to take .02 inches off of every bevel. You can try to use calipers and a sanding block. Dremel will probably work to fast to be precise enough. Do PKs have interchangable palletts?

thx hw. pk has hard foam grips. I think I will take monkeys advise on that "skin feel," grip cover.
I proved sunscreen is a proven technology. I was out on the sun for two hours today without it and I look like a Texas blood orange. unfirtunstely licking my burnt shoulder did not help any in pain relief. I guess only works if iam a dog.

I'd say it was more the timing of the shots, and yes, I mean shots (plural).

It was the first time we played, and I lost 3 & 4 (or 4 & 3), 1 break per set. But I had something on the order of 15 break points I did not convert. On many of those mikeler would serve & volley (on clay), and I literally put the return at his feet, and he would come up with an unbelievable drop half volley.

But that was pretty much the only time he would serve & volley: Down break point.

So, it was painful in that I lost by 1 break each set, and had multiple opportunities I did not convert. But he gets all the credit. Hitting that shot once or twice I would call it lucky, or just a good day. But 6 or 8 times? Yeah, he's got that shot...

We played again this spring in Reston. No drop shot half volleys, but he still won 5 & 5.

Both were super close and fun. I played a double match against a new guy a few weeks ago who was Brazilian. After about my 5th drop volley winner (not half), he goes in broken English "You never hit the ball for real". Then I slammed a volley on him 2 points later.

Happy belated 4th of July!

I am miserable after eating so much food yesterday. I couldn't say no to any grilled meats and sides.

Today's lunch is Chinese food. The food choice will not remind me of how I gorged myself yesterday.

The Capitol 4th fireworks show was not all that great. It is our tradition to watch it every year on PBS but they had a bunch of singers instead of the band playing patriotic tunes.

with the tightened security in DC, the cost of fireworks was prob less than 3% of the overall cost. the government is goofy like that.

mclovin sighting...newport news...

Yes, team McDowns was slashed by the Bolivian Necktie and his "4.0 bump-up" partner (no, Sup was not playing Virginia Districts this past weekend).

Watching some of the matches this weekend, I can't help but think either (a) I'm not really a 4.5, or (b) the rating system is crap.

There was a guy on the court next to us who downs mentioned was a 5.0 bump-down. I looked him up this morning. In 2012, he played mostly mixed & combo, going 18-5 in those leagues.

But, he played in one 5.0 men's league, played the #1 singles slot four times, and lost all four matches. So he gets bumped down because his mixed & combo matches are not counted since he has a regular men's 5.0 league on his sheet. Tell me how that makes sense.

Need Tennis Bag advice.

I have a AeroPro 12 pack (circa 2nd gen) right now. It's a great bag and still holding up. However, when trying to put more than 1 racquet in each compartment, I have to take out all the racquet and put it all at once in order to avoid scratching it. Question is are there any other larger bags that let's me store and take out racquets more easily? Currently, I am just putting one racquet in each compartment to avoid scratching either other.

Team McDowns went 1-1 on the weekend...but we did had a 3-0 lead in the first against the Bolivian Necktie, but then they kind of turned it up...i feel like i played poorly all weekend...somehow went 3-1...

our team got a little screwed on the scheduling...in the 2 matches we lost - both times we were playing our 2nd match of the day in the heat...both times we played a team, playing their first match of the day...both times we lost 2-3...still a decent weekend...luckily there was no rain...

next weekend -- possible team, SchapDown in MD Districts...

mclovin -- i think part of the problem is that downs is really a mixed dubs specialist. he's probably a 5.0 mixed dubs player. but in men's dubs he's testosterone deficient compared to the super macho man bolivian neckties of the usta.

what's for lunch people?
