Alternative to gut/poly to play in the rain

I currently play with wilson 16 @53 in mains and co-focus in crosses at 49. Love this set up. At the same time, I know that if I play with it on a very humid day or rain, the gut will break. Looking for an alternative set up for these kind of days. Tried ashway monogut but did not like it. Solinco tourbite hurts my elbow. Any suggestions? I am a 3.75 player constantly improving. Playing with extreme 2.0 currently.

I don't know of strings are ever 'good' in the rain whatever strings you have. Also remember the ball gets wetter and heavier too

understood, but a gut/poly set up is $30 and more likely to pop in the rain. As in the summer you always have to chance the drizzle if you want to play, need a good alternative that can last a while since that racket would only come out in bad weather.

3 options:

1. Rip Control
2. Syn gut / poly
3. Don't play when wet.

How about fxp tour vs rip control? Do you thing fxp tour mains msv cofocus crosses would work or would you do fxp tour full bed?

I never played with fxp so I can't say. RipC full bed is comfortable and has very good spin for non-poly.

Syngut/poly is a little firmer than gut/poly and gives you a little less spin and power, but more control

Thanks. I was looking at twu when you mentioned and fxp tour apparently has stiffnes close to gut (comfortable) and is quite spinny. Thought it may be worth a shot. Alternatively maybe I should go syngut/poly at lower tension than gut/poly

I play with gut/poly now, but I always have a couple of spare Prestiges in my bag with a multi/poly hybrid, just in case of the rain.

Best I've found is Prince Premier Control x CoFocus. IsoSpeed Energetic x CoF is good too, but PPC seems to perform exceptionally well. Nothing will ever be a good as gut, but PPA seems to be the next best thing.

I just strung up discho Microfibre mains and msv cofocus crosses and played with it for an hour. I have to say it feels pretty pretty close to pacific classic/cofocus. Tension 56/48.

I did this as an experiment. The main thing I dislike about discho mf is it's stickiness and lack of spin in a full bed. I was surprised I got so much free spin from it with the poly cross.

Main problem: this strings move more than gut mains, but not excessive. Also: it remains I be seen how long it keeps this playability.

We will see ... stay tuned.

Same here. I can't seem to grasp how people want to play tennis in the rain. I can barely jog in the rain without the fear of slipping!

In the summer in the southeast it might rain lightly for five minutes then stop due and be sunny again, as a Cumulous cloud passes.

You can play through this type rain especially on clay, but the lines getting slick is the problem.

This is the problem for gut in a climate that has frequent afternoon showers. Last year it rained briefly for near 40 days straight - it was not Noah Biblical rain, but simply a passing shower.

It rained on me today just hours before I hit. Our courts didn't close since the clay can take the rain.

I am trying full bed head fxp tour first. May hybrid it or try the Microfibre later.
As for playing in the rain, you can play through a drizzle on har-thru - but the gut will pop even with two minutes of light drizzling. If you have a limited amount of time during which you can play, you do what you have to do.

use your normal hybrid, just with a very soft multifilament in the mains rather than natural gut.

Sounds pretty cool actually.

FXP Tour is actually pretty nice full bed. Tried it today. What soft multi do you suggest?

Any multi you like really…

Some which would work quite well (IMO):
-Prince Premier Power/Control/Touch
-Pacific PMX Synthetic
-Head FXP Tour (very soft even though it has poly parts to it).
-Weiss Cannon Explosiv
-Babolat Xcel Power
-etc.

(I've listed relatively soft multifilaments that also are quite slick).

My gut/poly set ups have a back up full poly frame in case playing early a.m, wet clay courts, intermittent rain, high humidity. The trick is to have the right tension on the full poly to maintain the same racquet head speed that I use with Gut/poly.
Ex.
PS97 Gut/poly 55/52. Full poly 49
RF97 Gut/poly 58/55. Full poly 52

Currently trying Origin/SPPP at 26/24kg for the same reason and it seems a good alternative. Of course not the same feel but it's close enough as a backup for me.

I like Laserfibre supreme 2 multi as the gut replacement with a soft round poly. Gut/poly at 55/50 with a 5 per cent Pre stretch. Multi/poly at 53/49

Using TF X1 17g mains and Volkl Cyclone tour 18 in crosses at 60/55. Very soft and arm friendly and it’s semi comparable to my other 4 racquets which are gut/poly.

Cyclone tour with its geared shape helps me get quite a bit of spin. Having said that I am noticing it’s chewing through the TF X1 and I’m only at 4 hrs (I’m not usually a string breaker).

If I get to about 12hrs before breaking it will become my go to wet weather set up.
