Can Makarova win it all ?

After seeing the summer tournaments and the first 4 rounds, I feel reasonably confident in Makarova going all the way in USO 2014.

Makarova , unlike other fellow country women, is not a head case and plays steadily. Has decent technique , serve and all round game.

Beating Azarenka in this shape is not hard.

She has beaten Serena at AO and she has big wins at majors including Venus.

Serena seems nervous the end of set / closing out matches and I think that is where Makarova has an advantage.

The other side of the draw will not be the winner as far as I am concerned.

Opinions ?

Makarova should do the Macarena if she wins! :)

I wasn't the least bit impressed by her win over Bouchard, who made hideous errors on big points constantly. But I agree she should dispatch Aza.

Ekaterina Makarova has never been past the quarterfinals of a grand slam event during her career. She is two of four Russians in the top 30 who have never won a grand slam singles major.

She faces Vika in the quarterfinals, with the possibility of playing Serena in the semifinals, just to make it to the finals. As the number two ranked Russian, I give her a very minimal chance to get to the finals. Had she been placed in the opposite end of the draw, her chances of a finals upset over Vika or Serena would have been a better scenario for her.

It doesn't appear that this will be her breakthrough tournament. A straight-set win over a temporarily burned-out Eugenie Bouchard is not enough to catapult her game.

Weak.

I wouldn't put too much stock in the Serena win. She was hobbled and just standing on the baseline. Granted her previous 3 opponents still couldn't beat her, so she obviously earned it. I just wouldn't use it as a measuring stick of ability (nerves maybe). I think she's solid but nothing special. That said, who knows this year?

NEVER bet on someone winning who hasn't been to at least a SF before...
I agree. When you look at the history of the Open Era, there haven't been any huge, surprise wins at the US Open for the women. Tracy at 16 and Samantha over Serena are probably the top two. Even when Kim made her epic run after retirement, she had prior grand slam experience.

Genie wasn't burned out so much as exposed in the same way that Li Na at the AO, Sharapova at the FO, and Kvitova at Wimby did.

But I agree that Makarova isn't winning the whole thing.

She definitely is capable of beating an off-Serena (which is what it looks like she will be getting.) And I wouldn't call her an underdog against Woz/Peng.

Tough to see her beating Serena although this could be her best shot assuming Serena wins against Pennetta

Dont forget that Macarova is playing dubles too with Vesnina .So it might shift her chances againts next opponent

Bartoli won a major so anything is possible.

That's true. The difference here is that if Makarove ever breaks through at the majors, she will not bail after winning one. Bartoli knew she was lucky to win, and could not defend it or win anywhere else, so she ran away from tennis.

This U.S Open title has Serena's name all over it I think. She pretty much never gets this far in a slam and loses.

I could actually see Wozniacki winning. My odds would be:

Serena- 65%
Woz- 30%
Peng, Makarova, Pennetta all combined- 5%

Aside from Wozniacki making a serious transformation in her game, she's also friends with Serena--and I would guess studies her game, and persoanlity quirks when on court (the quirks or approach she sees in private). That could be an advantage for her. Then again, the opposite is true in their relationship, so they might cancel out any advantages out.

Agreed with all of that. Will be interesting if it happens.

I do think Wozniacki and McIlroy breaking up was the best thing for both of them and we will see them rekindle their friendship at some point, but not their romance.

Pre-retirement Bartoli would beat Makarova in a slam final. And I'm glad she quit so she didn't have to endure more years of trolls hating on her. She achieved her goal, she's not getting any younger and now she's enjoying her life big time. I miss her little freak show on the court.

I haven't seen any of Makarova's matches (this tournament) except the Bouchard one, but I don't see Katya getting past Serena. Not that it's impossible. And I haven't seen any of Peng 2.0, but it sounds like she's really taken it up a step. I used to think of her and Katya as being kind of equal - solid bridesmaids of singles and champions of doubles...capable of taking out the people they should and not the ones they shouldn't. Bummed I will miss it. I want to see what new and improved Peng looks like.

I miss Bartoli. She is also incredibly bright which is refreshing in itself.
