Juan Martin del Potro pulls out of Brisbane, in doubt for Sydney and AO

Translation :
Juan Martin del Potro won't be back on tour next week in Brisbane. The Argentine, out from the ATP tour since last February because of a left wrist surgery, prefered to pull out of the Australian event.

According to 'La Nacion', del Potro is still suffering from his wrist and couldn't play at 100%. Scheduled to play Sydney the very next week, he could also miss that tournament. That doesn't bode well for a possible appearance at the Australian Open.

In case of a new withdrawal, del Potro could be back on tour at Delray Beach, mid-February, before then playing at Acapulco.

Wrists are very delicate, and take tremendous punishment as the first joint removed from the racquet; some are never right again.

Sad news. Me and my tennis buddies were all looking forward to Del Potro finally returning in Brisbane. The longer he'll be out, the harder it will be for him to come back at the same level he was a year ago.

Such bad luck with this guy's health. Hope he gets well and makes a good comeback.

Bad news, saw him beat Tomic in Sydney at the start of the year, he is a crowd favourite and a generally all round, good guy.
Concerning he is still in this much pain this long out from an operation, not looking good for his long term career.

Very bad news but not unexpected, unfortunately. :(

Please take notice, folks: THIS is a genuine 'career ending injury'....

damn damn damn!!!!

Which will take longer: the left wrist healing completely or mastering the 1hbh? The answer doesn't seem so clear anymore!

This is sad news. Retirement might end up being the only option for Del Potro. What a shame. :(

I've never had wrist problems myself, but I hardly grip the stick at all. What I've read is that gripping too hard is what causes wrist issues.

Just how long would it take for him to bring his 1hbh to a half-decent level? (say to Karlovic's level?). That'd still beat retiring, and it's not like it would delay the recovery of his left wrist, right?

I'm desperate.

He was overly ambitious to expect to return to the tour on a full month of scheduling after such a debilitating injury. Ideally, one warmup before AO, whether an exho or a week-long 250 would have been right. I hope he didn't aggravate the healing wrist by overtraining in anticipation of that heavy immediate workload. Also, if he's still using full poly at a relatively high tension, I'm not surprised he's had a setback.

Lux Alu Power at 62 lbs in a stiff racquet... It may sound cynical, but it's no surprise that he has had (severe) wrist injuries.

The french paper got it wrong. Delpo hasn´t pulled out of Brisbane yet, he has until thursday to decide but probably he will pull out. What the original article says is that since the beginning of the off-season 9 weeks back, Delpo couldn´t hit his 2HB at full power and he has been feeling a litle bit of pain at times.

Maybe he doesnt want to play. :( You think he'd have been less self destructive of himself, using such a high tension, slowly whittling down his rackets and refusing to use new ones.

Maybe he doesnt have dreams of a long future in tennis and likes the taste of "freedom" so to speak.

But who knows?

Lord, Jesus and Mary in Heaven,

Has this child ever completed a full season of tennis? Someone should check his protein and he could probably use a bone density scan. A medical test which is largely reserved for women post-menopause.

May JC heal all his injuries. Praise be and hallelujah!

Don't worry, Del Potro is a fighter, he won't give up easily, I'm sure he'll do everything he can to get back on the tour.

Such a shame that some players have to deal with serious injuries. It all comes down to luck and genes.

Imagine the tour with Del Potro, Murray and Nadal not being injured so much...

Having the likes of Delpo and soderling made slams interesting from atleast the quarterfinals onwards, now we Just get a couple intersting matches before the semis, ie. if we are lucky.

Very sad news. I really hope his wrist will heal. After coming back from his right wrist injury he also felt pain for quite a long time. Even after playing on the tour again. So hope the pain in his left wrist will also fade away over time.

That's major league BS :(. I hope this is the last injury he has in his career, just get back 100%, I was really looking forward to seeing him back!!!

This guy is not coming back for some time. Wrist injuries a chronical, it's hard to get rid of the pain.

He has been gone a year soon. Thats some serious things.

To be honest I don't see him fully recovering of that sort of injury especially after being almost one year off and finding that when he is trying to play he feels that pain again. I think that he should consider to switch to a one handed backhand but Im not sure if he is mentally ready for a change like that. Otherwise I think Del Potro is done.

Wow one can really see on that first slow motion shot at 0.45sec all the vibration going through the wrist on that flat forehand..

is there something Delpo could do, or could have done, with his technique to help the wrists?

maybe use a head heavier racquet and looser strings.

that highlight vid shows how good Delpo was on defensive because of his very long reach and good speed for such a big guy!

i also wish Delpo would maybe have taken his fitness a little more seriously, i doesn't seem like he trained as hard as some of the other top players.

although as a Nadal fan, i must admit that having a healthy Delpo on tour would have affected him quite negatively IMO...

he needs to change his string setup and start slingshotting the ball.
