I've been trying to rewatch The Gangs of St Petersburg, Film 2, Episode 5, for the past few hours, but keep getting distracted. The weekends are just too rowdy these days...

The Old Man and the Sea - 1958. Spencer Tracy.

Interesting picture based on Hemingway's novel. Sadly, some of the sea shots and the clouds look faked. But still enjoyable, simple movie.

The Black Hole (1979)
Disney's clunky attempt at a Star Wars / Star Trek epic.
Had some retro cool effects & solid design elements, but a bad script & clueless actors choked it.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles. 1987. Steve Martin.

Totally silly and a waste of time. It was supposed to be funny.

Watched Star Trek int Darkness. I am feeling sorry of myself for having watched this. It's one of the worst movies I watched in the last few years, Now I am convinced that the new Star Wars may be worst than "The Phantom Menace.

I watched it because sureshs mentioned it and started a thread about me running to the theater to watch it. It was awful, i prolly abandoned it after 30 minutes.

Never been a Jason fan lol. The one that holds the most value for me is Jason goes to Hell. (seen it the most) plus the Freddy cameo :)

ha ha...

just reminiscing on horror, one of the last 'scary' movies that I really enjoyed when it first came out in the theatre was 'Jeepers Creepers'! of course the sequel ended up disappointing me a lot.

I'd say the only thing I found genuinely scary growing up were Freddy and Hellraiser. Amityville a bit too.

I saw MI:5. Cruise might be (probably is) a tool in real life - but he continues to deliver with this franchise. Good summer escapist fun.

My parents were in Vienna when they were filming scenes there so are pretty keen to watch it, sounds like i'll have to invite myself along :)

Went and saw the new Mission Impossible movie yesterday. I love these movies and they are fun but this one had some silly and ridiculous stunts - like a guy holding his breath for 10 minutes.

Giant (1956) - Elizabeth Burton, Rock Hudson, James Dean.

Won Best Director award and eight other oscar nominations.

Very interesting movie about life in Texas, deals with gender and race issues, too. Three hour movie, moves slowly, but I enjoyed the slow pace, never felt the movie was long at all. Spans about 25 or 30 years and across 3 generations of the Benedict family.

James Dean's last picture. He died in 1955 aged 24, before the release of this picture. He was nominated Best Actor in a leading role along with Hudson.

I remember getting credits in an American high school by taking classes at a junior college. I wrote a paper on this film, which was a classic film even back then, not knowing who James Dean was. I referred to his "naturalistic" acting, before I knew about method acting, and got the highest grade for my, in retrospect, naive analysis.

I use to often drive between L.A. and San Francisco. James Dean died in an auto accident in his racing Porsche not far from the I-5 in Paso Robles, soon after shooting ended for the film. Like American icon Jim Morrison, James Dean use to frequent Barney's Beanery. The Doors recording studio in the band's later days was very near the bar, as was the Alta Cienaga, where Jim Morrison would often reside.
