Bianca Andreescu: under the radar but not for long!

I just want to point out, not defending Kerber or anything, but a teenaged girl probably is a huge drama queen. That's no excuse for Kerber mouthing off. I wonder if Kerber would have held her tongue if she'd won the match?

But calling someone a drama queen at the end of a match is dropping your maturity level below that of the teenager. Way to take the mature higher ground Angie. It was sour grapes but vets need to show sportsmanship to teach these young kids how to act like champions win or lose. Bad form.

Kerber is likely pissed that Bianca is taking injury time outs but keeps pounding the ball like there is no tomorrow. I watched the whole game and can’t remember any drama really besides this.

Add the fact that she was owned twice, by a teen that was outside the top 100 jan 1st, and you get the snarky remarks and lousy handshake.

I’d expect more class from Kerber, but she is human and I’m sure the loss (es) hurts a lot. Cool headed, she probably would not behave the same.

Certainly from watching Indian Wells it seems Bianca does have some health issues right now and if the Miami Open wasn't a Premier Mandatory event she'd probably be taking some time off right now. The injury timeouts are perfectly legitimate IMO and its largely Bianca's mental toughness that allows her to play through them so well.

It's definitely an ironic comment.

Totally agree with you. I’m just trying to figure what was the drama Kerber alluded to. Really, outside the injury time out I have no clue.

Sylvain Bruneau was asked about it and thought it may have been because Bianca was very demonstrative on the court, and that maybe in time she'd tone it down (or something to that effect, can't remember the exact quote, it was on TV).

Serena is every bit as demonstrative, letting out primal howls after winning big points.

Maybe for a reserved German woman it seems like drama but other ethnicities are definitely more prone to letting their emotions out during a match. It's hardly being dramatic. And if I'm coaching Bianca and seeing her current success I'm not telling her to tone anything down. It's clearly working right now.

I think what Angie said was inappropriate, and this is her PR team trying to 'fix' it.
Having said that, I think Bianca is at risk of letting this incredible sudden success go to her head. (Not surprisingly, as she's only 18.)
I DO think Andreescu seems to be a little bit too cocky right now. Admittedly, it's difficult the find the line between cocky and confident. Players have to have confidence to win tournaments. I just hope it's not too much, too soon for Bianca.

I'm guessing we'll find out in pretty short order.

Why are all Canadian tennis players from Eastern Europe? Do they scout from there or what’s the deal?

Felix is from Eastern Europe?

I guess you don't understand that Canada is a land of immigrants. Look where there was strife....and Canada accepted immigrants from those countries. When my sons were young, there were new arrivals in our town from Bosnia. That was also the time when Milos' family moved from the Balkans. Bianca's family lived in Romania....North American was the promised land. Following that there were kids from North Africa and the Middle East. (Enter Shapo's family from Russia via Israel.

I love Canada.

ETA: About 5% of the Canadian population is Chinese. I'm pretty sure we aren't looking to scout tennis players from them. The Somalian immigrants aren't tennis stars either. When you live in an old world country it is hard to imagine a new world country and the mix that we have.

Then Kerber is too full of herself to realize that Bianca has better technique and also goes for it, injured or not (While Kerber can not generate winners as easily). And it might be very well be that Bianca allowed Kerber's comeback in the second set due in no small part to her shoulder hurting (plus maybe she decided to play with more margins), but when the chips were down, Bianca went for it again (and used DTL shots much more again) and Kerber was at a loss (one more time)...

I think Bianca started tennis in Romania though, when she was 7 and returned to Canada when she was 11.

I think so too.
I do find it funny that people spend so much time arguing about a player and which country gets to 'claim' them. Why not simply have both countries be proud?

It pretty straight forward and nothing to argue about. She is a Canadian player of Romanian descent. She still has family and cultural ties to Romania and she speaks the language but as far as her professional tennis career she is Canadian without a doubt.

Sigh. Why do the female tennis players feel that they have to "sell" themselves by modelling in bathing suits?
(Yes, I know that's a naive comment, and that that is what will help guys become fans of women's tennis players. Just look at Genie, and how that focus derailed her career though. And, yes, I also know that Bianca is no 'Genie'. Still sad though. )

Agree. What's worse, this will now show up on my Tapatalk as the picture for this thread, which is not great if I open it out in public tbh and someone has just posted on the thread ...

Are you aware that Romanians and Italians are related? Both Latin/Romance countries? Even the name Romania comes from Rome.

Prude environment eh?

It's got nothing to do with being a prude. If women want to post spicy photos, there's no problem.
The concern I have is that this is an amazing athlete, just breaking through, and her response is to post photos showing off her body. I don't see the male tennis pros jumping right on that. Is Felix posting photos clearly focused on exploiting his body?

I just hope that the female pros don't think that they have to go this way. That's all.

I think they do it to create more “exposure” for their fame and get people focus on them.It also a chance to show off and be a supermodel for a day!

If they want to be sexy, that's ok with me.

Still teenagers. A passing phase.
