Tension for someone who never restrings

My young sister who doesn't play on a high level broke her strings. She never restrings and has a low 3.0 game, the string I was thinking of is poly main, syn gut cross. Her last string she played more than a year with before restringing and that was a fully poly. What tension would you recommend for a player like this?

@Jannick
Try a hybrid like Wilson Duo Feel Element 125 & NXT 16 String with Luxilon Element in the mains at 51 lbs and Wilson NXT in the crosses at 53 lbs.

If you said she is not a high level player and a low 3.0 game, I would assume she does not have a high racquet speed, so why is she hitting with a poly string?

Because that was the string she had at that moment she plays with spin and it's very loose after that much playtime so it shouldn't matter. But yes, that is why I am thinking of a poly/syngut now.

if you never restring you would do well with full kevlar at maybe 50 pounds.. kevlar loses almost no tension after the initial loss..and maintains until breakage... which takes a long time. full kevlar can be harsh..but at 50 pounds it will not be that bad

There's a better than average chance (much better?...) that poly is working against her. That's a control string that primarily helps really big hitters at the college level - even college bound - and above. It takes a lot of swing speed to physically bend that string and make it perform as intended.

Yes it's rather tough, but it "goes dead" long before it physically breaks. And it's generally less resilient than softer string types. That means less "free power" and it can also more readily transmit impact shock into a player's wrist and elbow. The popularization of poly strings among recreational players over the last decade or so has brought about an explosion of wrist, elbow, and shoulder issues/injuries for players at just about every level.

If she's playing at a low 3.0 level, a 16 ga. synthetic gut tensioned at a pound or two above the middle of the recommended range on her particular racquet might be a good option. Even if it doesn't last a whole year, she can buy a full reel of the stuff for $35-$45 and pay a stringer for the installation. Multifiber is a comfortable option, but I'm not wild about it unless somebody needs a softer alternative. Multi is comfortable, but it tends to steadily degrade and soften as it's played. I prefer the service life and performance (and reasonable comfort) of syn. gut.

Full gut = best tension maintenance if you don't restring, and gentle on the arm.

Low 3.0 woman doesn't need poly (doesn't swing fast enough).

Poly worst string if you don't restring (most tension loss + dead poly harsh on the arm).

I would recommend:

Soft poly - 1 or 2 kgs below lowest recommended tension. She will get the most prolonged playability this way without sacrifying the normal feeling of her racquet.

The gut is too sensitive, the multi when goes bad it goes awfuly bad, not a hybrid for someone who does not restring

In the meantime, persuade her to re string at least once a year!

Alphagut 2000 black. 2# below mid-tension.

That's what I string my 12y/o daughter's racquet with. I re-string her racquet 2-3x a year.

I string my 16y/o son's racquet with HyperG 18 @ 49#. I re-string his racquet once a week.

OGSM at 55 lbs. restring when it breaks. When she gets to 3.5 switch to velocity at 52lbs. When she gets to 4.0 X1 Biphase at 56 lbs or natural gut at 57 lbs.

Once she gets to a better 3.5 or 4.0 it will be pretty hard to make generic recommendations on strings without seeing playing style. Low 3.0's almost all just dink the ball over with a frying pan grip.

I would do the nylon string in the mains. That way the poly crosses can saw through it in a more reasonable amount of time.
