3.0 player vs. Open player (actual pro)

That is Uhhh-GLY. What was he thinking?! Just the difference between one level is a lot. Some people have blind optimism. When reality sets in, they realize they never worked at improving, but only wanted the instant gratification of winning. And um, that ain't enough... ;)

Hmmm, very good statement. Instant success, instant gratification, instant anything would be ideal. I would love to have instant sex with all hot chicks, but that doesn't happen. You've got to work at it, develop a game (or game plan...lol), and keep working. Eventually, you'll have success (maybe, if you're willing to pay your dues....i.e. dishes, vacuuming, oh, wait a minute...talking about the wrong thing again).

Anyway, I hope I didn't offend anyone with that last statement. I'm married to a wonderful hot wife (7 months now). She's a hot blond nurse...what else can a man ask for...besides a win against a pro....lol.

if you develop a game-plan that works to get instant sex with all hot chicks please feel free to share it, even if it would include washing dishes or vacuuming.:p

I couldn't believe it when he did it the first time, but the second????

My friend Austin played his first tournament....ever, a few weeks back. He enlisted in the open event at a Chillicothe, OH event. Austin is a total beginner, but could maybe compete in a 3.0 event and maybe win a match (he's not very good, but he's a beginner...so he does have an excuse).

Where do you guys take your rating?

A beginner is never more then 1.0-1.5

A beginner would have no chance against a 3.0 player. Would end 0-0.

Match will be over in about 20 minutes so the pro will only have to hit about 48-49 shots. Quick warmup for round 2 opponent.

Your friend will learn how good tennis players can be.

OH MAN! i was watching the dude in the near court the whole time and was like umm that dudes is not a 3.0 then i realized after reading some of the comments that its the far court...

Yeah I thought the near court guy was like 4.0-4.5 or even better but then I see that guy trying to rip all his serves with a funky motion. Nice commentary about how he uses SW grip for serves.

I consider 2.5-3.5 beginner, 3.5-4.5 intermediate, 4.5+ advanced.

Ratings for players start at 2.5, if you can play a set, you are at least 2.5

Agreed. A player who can actually play a set or knows the fundamentals of the swing and can hold a rally is at least a 2.5. I'd say Austin is a 3.0...although...in the next tourney we'll truly know...lol...as he should be entering in the 3.0 event like he said.

By the way, it's not like it's the first time he's ever picked up a racket. If that was the case, there would be a chance of him being rated a 1.0-1.5. He's been rallying for quite some time (maybe about a year). He serves on his own all the time. He hasn't had any lessons, so he doesn't know some of the things he needs in order to do it right. In my opinion, he's a typical 3.0. Not a strong 3.0, but I think he could compete in a 3.0 event.

True rating systems don't work this way.

1.0 - 2.5 - beginner
3.0 - 4.0 - intermediate
4.5 - 5.0 - advanced intermediate (could be teaching)
5.5 + advanced

or something like that... at least in Canada it's that way....

I think what J011yroger is referring to is competitive tennis. There are not any 1.0/1.5 or 2.0 tennis leagues or tourneys. Competitive tennis begins at 2.5.

Man, your video taking skills need a lot of improvements. Why can't you use a tripod? Your screen is shaking constantly, making it very uncomfortable to watch. Just a comment.

This wasn't a Federer/Nadal championship match at Wimbledon. My goal wasn't to produce a live television event. I drove an hour and 15 minutes just to get there by 7:45 a.m. on a day off so I could get this on tape for you (and our fellow comrades on TT). I'm sorry you felt uncomfortable watching, but you probably should give me a little break. I warned you that the video wasn't that great in my previous threads, so you should've already been prepared to be uncomfortable. Plus, this wasn't a particularly easy video to shoot. I stood on the corner of a ledge that was about 8 inches wide, hanging onto a fence (so I wouldn't fall off) to shoot this at an angle so you could see both players.

In all, I think your tactfullness needs improvement (if anything needs improvement). I do appreciate you watching, but c'mon bro...don't beat me down for posting these vids. I did the best I could with what I had in that situation. Imagine, hanging onto the side of a fence with one hand, putting the camera up to the fence so that the lense is protruding through one of the holes (so I don't have to have fence in between the camera and the players) taping this match, and then having to talk to other players that were watching, telling them what I'm doing when asked. THEN!, the pro's little brother goes down about 3 yards from me and begins kicking and hanging on the fence! I couldn't say anything to a 5 year old about not shaking the fence so that lidation could be more comfortable when watching the videos. C'mon man.

yeah, just rewatched the vids... i wonder if he got the point this time around??

He did...lol. He told me that he would enter the next 3.0 event at the next tourney...lol. I told him that I really want him to succeed, but that you need to start somewhere realistic. He has finally agreed...lol. But, he when he looks at players in the 3.0 or 3.5 event, he still thinks that he can kill them...I just sort of laugh and let him know that it's a different ball game when you're in there hitting the ball.

Did he see the video? That is a huge eyeopener for a lot of people, to see how similar they look to the people they laugh at.

Thanks for that vid Jay27. It is the first time we can see a 3.0 playing against a pro...very interesting and pathetic in the same time.

Thanks alot for getting this on film for us...makes me see the clear difference between a 3.0 and an open player...that was indeed a form of rape.

Edit: Did the 3.0 player get even one point in the third video?

As for him, Google "Narcissistic Personality disorder"

I have to agree with tennis hand. If this guy think's he will get better against better players that outclass him this much, he is in for some hurting. Most people who are learning their strokes in this scenario do not get better, they get worse. They develop bad form and habits just to get a defensive ball back into play. They just throw whatever junk they can to get the ball back and sacrifice the growth of making your swing step up to the pace so to speak. He'll probably just be holding the racquet out and pushing balls back or launching them over the fence for a while.

On the other hand I think that a person who has defined their strokes a bit (a least 3.5-4.0) can really improve their game by playing with better opponents as long as they try to develop their swing into the higher caliber shots.

Anyways I do find your story very amusing albeit a bit sad though. While hope and optomism are a good thing, I think it's a bit arrogant and selfish for him to play in this level of a tournament. It pretty much wastes everyone's time IMO and takes the place of a player who could benefit from being there (if space was needed). I also think it's disrespectful for someone to come out new and just say I can be on the same court as someone who has played at a high level for years. I wouldn't walk onto an NFL play field and say give me the ball, I can throw as good as Tom Brady. I don't know how officials even let him in with no prior tournament history. I guess its just a pay to play non sanctioned tourny? He's better off spending the entry fee on lessons.

Links are good on page 5

Guys, I guess the links don't work on the first page, but they work on page 5 of this discussion.

I just want to let all of you know that I really appreciate you taking time to post to this discussion. It's definitely interesting to see the difference, despite how embarrassed I felt for my buddy. He's doing all right. He says that his next tourney will be with the 3.0's. I told him that I really want him to win a tennis match so I can buy him dinner...lol.

By the way, I thought my friend Austin had only been playing about a year, but my friend Bob (who got him started playing tennis) says he's been playing almost 3 years. Makes me wonder if he can actually truly learn to play tennis.

Mr. Wilkes must be getting serious about his next 3.0 tourny! I just had to string his O3 tour MP with nat. gut mains and TnT2 crosses. I tried to get him to reconsider his request for those strings but he obviously knew more about strings than I did. He had to have the natural gut, solid core multi-filiment hybrid job, because he heard that TnT was one of the most durable strings made to go with his gut mains.

I don't know many 3.0 players who are string breakers, but lots of time it is easier to just give them what they want.

Much easier. This guy creeps me out, he's like a serial killer in training.

Haha! My thoughts exactly! Austin is a good kid (age: 22), but he does lack some in the mental department. Maybe the good ole partying days has finally got the best of him.

TennisDarren, I need two new string jobs on my new Wilson nCode 95's (not the K's). I'm making a switch to from my Bab Pure controls to the Wilson. So, I'll probably sell my entire deal as one package here pretty soon. Maybe I can convince Austin that he'll be able to compete in the open tourney's with these things and sell them to him!!!...lol. I'm kidding, I'm kidding. lol.

Which one is the 3.0 I honestly couldnt tell. If it's the guy in the white I'd say he's more than 3.0.....plus how did it take over 5 minutes for a service game to finish, I think I counted a few Deuce Ad's there, so it wasn't a killing?

PS Love the accent!

Yeah... Please fix the link, I'm actually really interested in watching this.

He did repost the links actually...they're on another page (5 i think, like tennisdarren said)...but here they are:

To Duzza: are you sure you're watching the correct match? It's NOT the one right in front of the camera. Watch the match on the far side. And yea, the guy in the white shirt is 3.0 being talked about...

OHHHHHH well that would explain a lot!. Haha I did actually watch the one in the bg for a second and saw the guy in the white hit a ball massively out. Time to revisit those links! LOL!!

I was well scared when I saw that vid.

I was thinking "Damn, if that dudes a 3.0, Then I my American rating is gonna SUCK!!"
then I saw it was the dude in the background, and order was restored.

How good is the guy in the foreground? Ratings wise?

I just can't understand how your friend doesn't get the picture. When I was his age, and probably at about his level, I (naively)entered an open tournament. Amazingly, my 1st round matchup didn't show, so I ended up in the second round playing against a player I think was probably a 5.5. He played with a counterpunching style, so we actually had some 10 shot rallies, but there was never a question during that 40 minute double bagel that my opponent was in charge of every point. I never had a chance to break, and I might have achieved game point on my own serve twice. I didn't take the fact that I actually won some points as a positive; I had no doubt that he would have done the same to me as a 3.0, a 3.5, or a 4.0. Your friend must be incredibly thick.

I think he is a 4.0 to 4.5. I think that was a 16's tourney...not sure. He was pretty good, but I think he had some weaknesses...mainly his backhand wasn't getting incredible pace...I also didn't much care for his bh slice...but, he definitely was a hustler. And, most importantly, he got the ball back much more than his opponent.

Also, I don't think Austin has seen this post. I'm hoping he doesn't...lol...

But, if he does, I want him to realize I'm not doing this to bash him or sway him from tennis. I want him to succeed and nothing succeeds like success. I remember winning my first match. It was such a wonderful feeling. I couldn't help smiling and I actually felt bad for my opponent. But, the best part for me was telling the local pro that hosted the tourney that I won!!! Got killed the second round, though...lol.

Anyway, I do like Austin. He's a quiet and peaceful person, but he lacks in the logic department. And, if he enlists into an open tourney again, I'm gonna retire from tennis.
