5.0 leagues different

Is it possible players don't want to be rated at 5.0 because there are less opportunities for league play? The 3.0 - 4.5 leagues have two singles and three doubles matches each team match. However, 5.0 leagues only have one singles and two doubles per team match. Why is this? Is it because there aren't (or statistically shouldn't) be that many 5.0 players in local leagues?

That is five less opportunities for someone to play in their league match each week. I would be bummed.

5.0 leagues are much more rare in general because the competition is much more scarce.

But I wouldn't worry about it unless your a 5.0 yourself.

It's just the math. In general, there simply isn't that many 5.0s playing leagues. This is why for some teams you even see a lot of 4.5s. If they play 5 individual matches like the rest, they may not be able to fill their roster week in and week out.

Also, keeping the matches at one singles and two doubles means you don't need as many people on your roster. Since there tends to be less people rated 5.0, I think this makes sense.

I agree...I guess I was trying to find out if anyone knew if it was a "chicken vs egg" situation. Are there less people rated 5.0 because there are fewer teams or are there less 5.0 teams because there are less 5.0 players and you don't need as many players for your roster?

I've played both the past few years. I can tell you that the format of the 5.0 leagues makes for a lot less camraderie off the court. Most of the time the guys just play their matches and take off. In 4.5 most guys hang around and watch all the matches finish. Also, there are usually fewer 5.0 teams, so you end up playing the same guys over and over, which isn't as fun.

I think a lot of it depends on geography. Throughout the year I spend time in two large cities and find that there is a very competitive and full 5.0 level of play in tournaments.
