The Wimbledon Championships start tomorrow and there are a few anniversaries and interestings this year that I want to cover in this thread.
7 - This year's Wimbledon is the first edition to be held during the reign of King Charles III. During the nearly 150-year history of Wimbledon, there have been 7 British kings and queens - Victoria, Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII, George VI, Elizabeth II and now Charles III.
10 - 10 years since Andy Murray's triumph, which ended the long 77-year wait for a British Wimbledon winner in the gentlemen's singles. In the final, he defeated Novak Djokovic, for whom this is yet the last lost match on Center Court.
20 - 20 years ago, Roger Federer won his first Grand Slam title. In Wimbledon 2003, he started his amazing streak of 5 Wimbledon titles in a row.
30 - 30 years ago, Pete Sampras won for the first time Wimbledon . The year 1993 represented the beginning of hegemony in Wimbledon for him, when until 2000 he won 7 out of 8 Wimbledon editions.
50 - 50 years since the infamous Wimbledon boycott. A number of tennis players didn't participate in Wimbledon at that time in protest against the ban on the start of Nikola Pilić, who was banned from participating by the Yugoslav Tennis Association. This boycott led to the creation of a universal ranking and the liberation of players from the dependencies on their national tennis associations.
