Adrian Mannarino brings two racquets to court in his small Nike bag

So I watched the entire Mannarino and Coric match today and specifically kept an eye out on Manarino's gear. I found it very interesting that Mannarino, who at one point was ranked 27 just a couple of years ago, brought two APDs to court in his black small Nike bag (bag is not very visible here, will take better screen grabs when replays are available). He is obviously not sponsored by Babolat (no stencil or bag and no Pure Aero PJ). Very curious. Granted he is out of the top 50 at the moment, but he is also sponsored by Nike. Also the two racquets bit was very intriguing. There were some shots during the match of his gear and a quick glimpse of his bag which had no more racquets. Just 2 racquets total, in such humid, muggy conditions and that too for a pro is somewhat surprising.

These guys play so much Tennis he probably just thought I’ll show up with two rackets and just get a quick match in. When’s the last time you saw someone break two sets of strings in a match? He could’ve had more frames at the stringers well you never know

Which frame is it?
It’s the first gen Cortex AeroPro Drive. You can see the plastic V just above the grip.
Hi VS and Cisco. Been a while, hope you guys have been well and staying safe.

This could be either the APDC 2007 or the APDGT 2010. When painted over, the APDC 2007 and APDGT 2010, both are virtually identical looking in photos. Same V shape Cortex above handle. The only way to identify them is playing with them side by side. GT version plays less hollow and swings heavier. If I was to guess it would be the 2010 GT because it was more popular in pros and general consensus being it is just overall better.

What is for certain is that it is definitely not the APDO 2004 which doesn't have Cortex, or the APD 2013 which has active Cortex and a different shape above handle. Mannarino was famously using the APD 2013 when he asked on Twitter if anyone still had those in stock, if you guys remember.

A picture of the 2004, 2007 and 2010 APDs from my collection. My favorite are the 2013 however (not pictured). As you can see, 2007 and 2010 version are identical looking above throat.

Quality post—thanks for the insight.

2004 is the best by far

Depends, honestly, because all of them feel different and people have different likes and dislikes. I like it, but it definitely feels extremely raw and least dampened, maybe even harshest compared to all others :)
it feels most classic, really hate all this cortex stuff, also Rafa himself was using it long time under different pj.

Because journeyman strokes and equipment more applicable to the TT rec player than GOAT gear.
Is it more relevant ? This guy has a veiled pro stock version of the aero pro from like 2010. Extremely rare frame to source and he’s won nothing but 250s with it. Probably customized to be just as unplayable as any other pro stock. Just seems totally inconsequential. Way more interested in other babolat user pro stocks personally

You can buy a stock RF97 today that Fed won 3 majors with that’s pretty playable for most competitive players relative to other pro stocks. Just a confusing thread to me

According to a guy in the court next to mine the other day, pros are all switching to low tensions and that's why his racquet was strung at 35lbs. Mannarino is a trailblazer that will be remembered forever in tennis history.

Roflmao, until you break a string. Then what do you do?
Davidenko won a tournament using only one racquet and he was praying to not break a string...Prince wasn't paying him any money mind you, " b/c they gave all the money to Sharapova", according to him.
They gave him only one stick(say a closed frame pattern, 18x20) and he prefered it to the rest of his racquets( that were open pattern, 16x19, let's say, as it might have been the reverse scenario).

More like SUB-25s nowadays.

(Even reported at 18.5 lbs once)

Gino my friend.. journeyman or not, Mannarino's a very smart player.. Doesn't have big serve or weapons comparatively... I loved seeing him play at Delray beach one time can see the allure since he piques my curiosity every time he takes the court. His racquet specs btw are much easier to use than RF97.. 352g static, 32 bal and 330 sw. And you can get the APDGT off the bay quite easily..

Besides, I mean we are all gear nerds here, mostly right? Whats so confusing about wanting to know and learn more about what equipment pros use or what their quirks are? We have talked about far more players actually ranked lower than him and who have won far less than him and their racquet specs etc. I'm more confused as to why you are confused about this thread lol..

all fair points... to me its just confusing why his specs have so much interest. Why not an ongoing thread about a more exciting player? I guess its the weird stuff like his low tensions. anywho, was more of a passing comment than an indictment on everyone interested in the thread. carry on and enjoy mate (y)

I wonder, if that did happen where you popped a string and had no other usable rackets in the bag, would you end up having to default the match? I would think so.

He had racquets from Prince, probably in the closed pattern frame...Just no money, "cause they all went to Sharapova".

It was the 18 x 20 O3 Tour model.
A search of Getty,2013 + Davidenko will lead you to a picture the correct frame, which was not widely released as I recall. I am not sure if a it was ever released to the public.
This is well after Prince had moved on from the original O3 tours.

Don't know, I'll check as I bought 5 different O3 Tours for my wife.

Thanks for the information.
The O3 Ozone line had a different PJ than the 1st generation O_ports, or atleast I know they were different in the 110 Blues.

I think Mannarino's choices in clothing and bags come down to personal style. Small Nike bag and a beige shirt is French to me.

I wonder if he's said no to any endorsement money. Hydrogen makes me think he says yes to everyone though.

If a pro broke strings in all their rackets, they would likely have to retire and lose the match. I would think they might be given a couple of minutes to get another racket say from the coach in the crowd. Same in a rec match, you lose unless you can get another racket quickly as in a few minutes but I am not sure of the default time. In a playoff match last spring, my opponent broke his strings and the goofball's back up racket was already broken. He went into the pro shop and got a demo and then he broke the strings in the demo. I loaned him one of my frames after he broke the demo. The demo was similar to his original frame which I think was a Wilson pro staff type frame from years ago but I loaned him a Yonex Ezone 98 which is very different than his frame.

Our local league says a player can get a racket from off the court - say a teammate or from the pro shop but it has to be done quickly. I cannot remember how they defined quickly but I would think 3-5 minutes is reasonable. If they can't come up with a quick replacement, they have to retire and lose the match.

LOL jesus how hard does this guy hit... the only time I ever broke strings in my life was when I was trying to pulverize every forehand on ball machine as hard as I can hit

He hit hard with lots of spin. I think he was using nylon in his racket and the demo likely had nylon that had been in the frame for some time.
