Congratulations to all the good Nadal fans on this board:

@MichaelNadal @Tiki-Taka @Gary Duane @Nostradamus @Atherton2003 @marc45 @aldeayeah @Vamos Rafa Nadal @Mainad @Antonio Puente @SonicNirvana @Rickenbacker4003 @La Grande @Robin3381 @Sephiroth @Incognito @RaulRamirez @Raul_SJ and the many others on here.

I've always thought that if Federer can't go down as the greatest in tennis, I'd want Rafa to be that. We root for our favourites and statistics and dominance plays a huge role but we ultimately watch sports for the indelible moments. And Nadal has given me that. We might have a player overtake Nadal in total slams in the near or far future but he is a reference point in tennis (as Federer is, for me.)

His style of play. His grit. His determination. His passion. Are all things most of us will remember. If someone other than your hero were to end up as the greatest, who better than someone with as much class and grace as Rafa.

I think he's a role model and good example in sports. Gamesmanship is subjective, and I think that some little things that Nadal does that seem to irk others are relatively innocuous. When you're at the top level, you're trying to get a competitive advantage whenever possible. That's the mindset of someone in the top tier of his sport. But that has nothing to do with humility or class - two things he epitomizes.

In an era where trash talking and superciliousness are rampant, and are a major staple in major sports as athletes attempt to stand out on way or another to drive interest in their brand, this is a man who does things the right way. Respect was and always should be present in sports. And he's a paragon of respect, in my opinion.

When he isn't facing Federer, I'll be cheering for Nadal. And if he goes down as the greatest ever, I - as a Federer fan -will be happy for him.

The funny thing is that I'm a Fed fan. ;) I got interested in Nadal in 2013, when I thought Fed was done. I enjoyed his run that year. I thought he was the most interesting player left who could win big events. But once Fed got competitive again, I've always rooted for him. I was doing it again this tournament and was horribly disappointed at his Wimbledon loss, and I thought he had a good chance at the USO.

I picked Nadal as the probable winner on stats. I don't like his delays, but I also don't think he's an evil cheater. Great champions just want to win. Maybe they cross the line sometimes. I do like aspects of his game, the fight, his willingness to adapt and improve, and I like the aggressiveness he is not playing with. I really enjoy it when he comes to the net. I wish he did it more often. He may have the best overhead in the game.

@Gary Duane is a fed' fan, i'm sure about that;)
Yup. Although now and then I've had Fed fans pissed at me for now "towing the line". ;)

Djokovic is my least favorite, but I have great respect for all of the Big 3, and Murray, and Wawrinka. I think by in large the top players are pretty good men, and they are all fantastic players. Murray frustrated me the most because of his serve.

It seems you are a very calm person, most of the people here are ready to kill to prove their fave is better :D.

Very good post - which is much appreciated in an atmosphere that is often so toxic and rancorous.

I agree with everything you wrote both re: supposed gamesmanship and the reasons we follow sports such as tennis. In my case, I enjoy both playing and watching and as I've gotten older, my ratio of playing to watching has gone down. I've been a tennis fan long before The Big 3, and hope to be one long after...assuming they ever retire, that is.

It's doubtful that many of us follow tennis so that we can choose someone to root for that will go down as the (mythical) GOAT. I'm satisfied that we are at a time when we're seeing the three best of the Open Era, perhaps ever. I regard them as essentially equal (though different in playing style and personalities) and though I've evolved into a dual Rafa-Novak fan, that doesn't mean that I don't like or admire Roger.

When it comes to discussing tennis, I just want respectful, open-minded (if passionate at times) dialogue and something resembling nuance. Again, your post is appreciated.

Thanks for the shout out and a great post! I believe Federer still has #21 at either AO or WB. I like Federer as well and it would be sad to see that his last slam final is Wimbledon 2019.

It was fun. My expectations were not very high so I was pleasantly surprised.
Glad you changed your mind about Medvedev. I don't know what happened to him in Montreal final but I said he has everything to become a threat. Also, I was right about him not being tired after playing many tournaments.

What I said about Medvedev at that time was accurate, he was flopping in the finals. It was aftet he switched it on against Djokovic that he began to change the narrative. This USO, he impressed the heck out of me by simply refusing to die.

Yes. Nadal choked a bit in the third set and woke up the beast. Medvedev was unstoppable after that. Given Nadal's recent history and the fact that he is 10 years older I was sure he will lose the fifth set physically. Glad he proved me wrong this time. (I don't even remember when was the last time he won such a tough match to get the title. Last year in USO all the tough matches were worth nothing)

His toughest major final victory since the 2009 AO? Or really, the 2013 FO semi, which was the de facto final.
