Any American Football Fans Here ?

Sunday is football day in my house and everyone in the family has their special team. My son tends to like my rival teams and we have great fun with that. One weeek I'm laughing at him and vice-versa. My longtime favorite team is the Dallas Cowboys however as a True Fan, I've committed myself in sticking with them throuugh all the ups & downs. Gotta tell you that as of the last seemingly 10 years, it's been mostly downs & outs but I am hopeful that we will at least make it to the 2nd level of the Playoffs within the next couple of years. I do however like a lot of other teams and generally don't jump on band wagons. If they are losing constantly, I'm still a fan and if they are winning I'm still a fan as evident in my acknowledgement of liking the Cowboys.

In Order of Appreciation :

Dallas Cowboy 2-1 NFC East
Carolina Panthers 2-2 NFC South
Baltimore Colts 4-0 AFC North
Chicago Bears 4-0 NFC North
San Diego Chargers 2-1 AFC West

*Cowboys - They need a better QB imo, TO talented yes, headcase absolutely, Defensive Team 50% effective, this team is going to spoil Tuna's record. I actually like Barber more than Jones

*Panthers - Sum it up "Steve Smith, Keyshwan Johnson is nothing more than a distraction but at least a good one. Offensive Team 60% effective this year so far. Defensive Team 80% effective.

*Colts - PM is Da Man, if he can't do only maybe Brady can. No running game although they tried to keep the ball on the ground yesterday to test the waters and it worked out. I was impressed.

* Bears - Nothing but good ole smash mouth football from these guys. This team has a long standing tradition to be physical win or lose. As some will say, one of the last remaining teams that play the way football is suppose to be played.

* Chargers - My Homies and yeah I suppose I should like Oakland or the 49ers but Oakland ??? Just can't do it and although I like an underdog, I think the 49ers ended last season with the worse record in the NFL winning only 1 game I believe. That's just too much heartache for a person to handle.

For anyone outside of the USA that doesn't know this, here are the terminologies.

NFL = National Football League

NFC = National Football Conference

AFC = American Football Conference

SB = Super Bowl

PB = Pro Bowl (always played in Hawaii)

Whats the difference between the Pro Bowl and the Super Bowl?

And why don't they actually win bowls? I've seen the Super Bowl prize, and its distinctly trophy-shaped.

The objective is to take the browns to the superbowl

Also, the their are two divisions in the national football league

I'm more of a college football fan myself.

Was fanatical about the Bucs (well before their Super Bowl win) until they gutted the team. Just doesn't feel the same anymore.

The AFC & NFC make up their teams with the outstanding Players of that season and have a face-off. Kinda like Bragging rights on which Conference is better or has the brighter Stars. They call it the Pro Bowl and actually I have no clue as to what the Trophy looks like. And the Super Bowl trophy doesn't look like a Bowl either so I don't know why. I suppose I could look it up but ... it really doesn't matter. The Super Bowl is much more important. That's their Grand Slam event of the year. That's the Crowning of the BEst Team of the Year and with that comes huge prizes for the Team and its' Players.

The Pro Bowl is more for fun than anything else. After a long season of battle, the best Players go to Hawaii and have this Bragging Rights Game and basically enjoy themselves. Nobody playes to get hurt and they are not really putting in 100% effort.

They play in stadiums that are shaped like bowls. Super Bowl is the best two teams each year. Pro Bowl is the best players from all teams in a less serious game.

Even here in Canada the NFL is more popular than the CFL. I wanted to buy some pigskin yesterday but there were only CFL balls left. Bah!

[aside: does anyone know what a 'Rouge' is? I know it's the French word for Red, but I dunno what it means in the CFL. Like the Sasketchewan Rough Riders only scored 3 Rouges last year. What the heck is it?]

I can't believe you get get American football games over in England. Do you have to subscribe to some special NFL package to get the games? Do you get Monday Night Football as well? It's amazing the number of games broadcast over the weekend. You have over 3 dozen college football games on Saturday and over a dozen NFL games on Sunday.

Hey Mano the Skins have a great Defensive Team. Weren't they in the top 5 last season ? You're right although, seems the Boys always had a better Offense and the Skins had a better Defense and as they say, Defense Wins Games and Offense gets all the glamour.

Funny but I was laughing about that the other day. Can't figure out why who ever wins the Super Bowl becomes the Super Bowl Champs of the World, when all the Teams are here in the States :confused:

Even Euro Football doesn't get to compete in the National League so where does the World concept come into the picture ?

"....of the world?" The team that wins is called "Super Bowl" champs, period. What announcer includes "of the world" i.e. "Super Bowl Champs OF THE WORLD" during e.g. a boardcast?

"Speaking with Tom Brady, MVP of the Super Bowl Champs OF THE WORLD, N.E. Patriots......" nope.

It's "Super Bowl Champs" period.

"Of the world...." You're confusing something with a song by Queen. As for "WORLD," the 1st two AFL-NFL games were not referred to as the Super Bowl (let alone "Super Bowl of the World" ) Those first two games played at the L.A. Colliseum were called "The World Championship of American Professional Football" (Green Bay 35; KC 10 / Green Bay 33; Oak. 14) and to that end, "technically-speaking," the New York Jets (Super Bowl III) won the "1st" Super Bowl.

You're talkin 4-0 right now big guy. I've always loved the Bears. Bad Boys of the North. The Browns play a similar game but the Bears just always did it better. I think the last great run the Browns had was somewhere around 1986. The Bears D, is going to be hard to deal with especially if they keep going the way they are now. The last thing you want is for those Boys to get pumped up thinking they're going to the Big House Party. The closer they get the more determined they'll be. AND you are absolutely right about Grossman. Don't worry I believe he'll suffer far less sacks than most. But if he should go down and out, why worry you still have Griese ? He'll get the job done. Who you gotta worry about are your RBs. Personally I don't like any of them because they don't explode out of the line like a Shaun Alexander does.

Haha it's cool. Anyway Eli has a ton of talent and is one of the best qb's under pressure right now. He has the team around him along with the smarts to be a hall of famer one day :) . Though I doubt he'll be able to basically be the offensive coordinator like Peyton is with the Colts.

Colts 4-0
Bengals 3-1

Not bad start for my favorites, though if the Thugs (Bengals) keep getting convicted we won't have much of a team to play anymore.

I couldn't believe my eyes when he missed that kick. I don't give a rats ass about most accurate this or that, that Kick was makable for any freakin Kicker in the NFL. And now my Cowboys have him and he's doing the same thing again. Missed two important 3 pointers in their first game. I think He's lost his confidence and just another headache for the Tuna.

And then to top it off when the Bus tried to run it in for the winning TD when all they had to do was kick a short little FG and he fumbled the ball and I forgot who grabbed it but this small little fast dude couldn't out run Big Ben ???????????? What a bunch of crap that was.
My heart sank on that play. They had three opportunities to win that game and fell apart. We're talking about a Team that was heading for 16-0.

I understand your point but I still think Peyton will pull it off although he lost his most reliable GoTo guy in Mr. James and who's gonna replace him ???

A Rouge (AKA Single) is scored when a punt (or missed field goal attempt) goes through the back of the end zone or is not returned out of the end zone by a receiving player. The kicking team scores one point (rouge). The returning team than scrimmages from their own 35 yard line.

Da Bears!

Bears fan here, although living in North Carolina they always show the Panthers so I support them to a lesser extent.

I remember the line about Ditka back when he was coach: "Mike Ditka has discovered the forward pass...but he remains suspicious." So for me, it's amazing the Bears have a capable offense and a QB who can throw the ball downfield!

I saw part of it and the team pretty much let Farve down. There was a dropped pass in the endzone along with a fumble on a handoff to their backoff running back directly after forcing a turnover. Ahman Green wasn't in so Farve had to pass nearly every down later in the game. Also it didn't help that apparently McNabb caught fire and threw two and ran for two TD's.

You see that's the problem :neutral: Bret is probably playing (no let me correct that) is most certainly playing his last season. Packer Fan here...I know it's a sad state of affairs over there. BUT I have to disagree with the above statement it really is not Favre struggling as much as it is the Packers having the youngest team in the NFL right now. The truth is there is no supporting cast. NFL=National Fixed League...I've been betting on NFL for past couple years now. I've done pretty well for myself, but I must say NFL definitely has its fixes. Some, not all, have some sort of fix...whether is the mob placing bets and paying off refs, or just alot suspicious plays. Its hard to comprehend if you don't bet on the game, but you'll be surprise how Vegas creates these spreads and how they have the power to alter these games. NFL is like a soap opera nowadays.

Oh yea...I'm a Colts fan.

BluBalls - The Steelers slapped the Colts silly all over the field-especially Manning. And the ref. called back a Steelers fumble recovery that would have led to a score (but instead the Colts went on to score). And even with that break, the Colts lost. Your DB couldn't outrun a 6'5" QB in the open field and your kicker swallowed his balls at the moment of truth. What more can you ask for? The Colts should have, and DID lose that game, just as they've lost all their big games under Peyton.

Peyton Manning = Dan Marino (i.e. A QB with gaudy stats and NO Ring to show for it)).

Yep that about sums it up as I saw it too but I see Peyton in the same pickle as Bret. It's not about him as much as the Team around him. Why do you think he feels the need to Coach from the Field so much? Last year's Team was basically Manning & James and now even though they're 4-0 I wouldn't take any bet that says they make it to the SB.

If anyone on here doesn't put Peyton Manning in the Top 5 Best QBs, they're nuts. And as for all around, one of the saddest Football Stories is Marino not getting a Ring because as much as I loved the late 80's Cowboys with Troy.
Dan Marino was a much better QB than Troy Aikman
