Any Federer Fans Worried that a Crushing Loss to Nadal Will Send Him Into Retirement?

Are any other Federer fans worried that a terrible loss (5 sets) to Nadal will send Federer into retirement? As we all know, Federer has endured more seemingly tough losses than any player in history. Of course, he has been incredibly resilient after them, but one would think, eventually there has to be a loss that just crushes him.

No, he didn't think he'd be in top form until April. He's had a good result here, it's not like this is his favorite slam.

Why would it crush him? Even beyond this AO (IF Federer lost), there's no guarantee Federer will always run into Nadal at a major, so he will press on.

I think--or rather my suspicion--is that Federer (with enough conditioning) could win this year's Wimbledon, and call it a career during the ceremony. That would be the best way to retire, and he would do it at his best major.

not a chance - he's on the court, because he wants to be there. He's had crushing defeats, bad seasons etc. and it never made him wanna quit or take a sabbatical.

I believe he won't retire like that. I can see him announcing retirement at end of US Open before an AO one year. That way he can do a victory lap.

Federer lost a match after leading 2 sets to love and also has 2 MP ON HIS OWN SERVE.

If he manged to get past that one i think he will be fine

Why would a 5 set loss be terrible? It would prove how close the match was and how even both players were.

Now a straight sets loss involving bakery could be considered crushing. But it still wouldn't force either player into retirement.

The suggestion that he had endured "more tough losses than any player in history" is an embarassment. Anyone who's had any success knows it makes losses easier to take as one expects the comfort of more success later. The tough losses are the ones suffered by low ranked players trying to scratch out a life on tour. A guy who's had the success, wealth, and surrounding family traveling with him should not have great trouble dealing with losses.

Losing to Nadal in the semifinals of the Aussie Open (when Nadal is world #1 and clearly the best player in the world on outdoor hard courts at the moment) would hardly be crushing to Federer, especially given their past history and matchup issue. You could have made this thread after his loss to Robredo or Brands, but this makes no sense. He just thrashed Murray and Tsonga, for god's sakes! No matter what the outcome of the match is, I'm sure Federer is feeling better about his game than he has in about a year.

No, not a chance. Federer is trying some new things and I think there's quite a few positives he can take away from this tournament. Beating Murray and Tsonga in the manner that he did is no joke and the changes he's made will allow him a better chance at Wimbledon and US Open. Things are just beginning to look-up again for him.

With that said, he's not out of the Australian Open yet and I actually give him a good chance of winning should he serve and execute his strategy well. He's feeling very confident at the moment and a confident Federer is incredibly dangerous, even for Rafa.

Federer has more tough losses than any other player? I disagree strongly.

Just off the top of my head

*2005 AO (had a match point)
*2005 Master Cup (2 points from the match)
*2008 Wimbledon
*2009 AO
*2009 USO
*2006 Rome (had a match point)
*2010 & 2011 USO (had a match point)

I actually won't be watching and good thing it's at an odd time sunrise. So I'll just wake up and check the result and hope it's a good one. ;)

As far as the OP goes, are you kidding? If that was the case then Fed would've never recovered from his Wim 08 or Rome 06 losses, they were more crushing than any other losses he's had. Arguably AO 09 too but I rate the former two as the more crushing for different reasons.

Still Federer for now.

Djokovic has RG '13, and maybe RG '12 and USO '13 really as his only tough losses.

Federer has: AO '05, Wimby '08, AO '09, USO '09, USO '10, RG '11, USO '11, AO '12.

Fed will retire when his contract with Nike expired which won't happen before 2016. He has to play as obligation to the sponsors. ...it's worth $70m/year!

Oh yea Fed's always had it easy and is undeserving of anything he's got cause you're a jealous nutter coz Fed's got bazillion times the ability that your hero has. Seriously man, this guy? Djokovic?

Of course NOT.

Federer is the great person who doesnt get bogged down with failures, lost match points.

He tries and tries till he succeeds, no short cuts.

Federer lost 1,3 and 0 in 2008. How many majors he won after that ?

Unwanted thread. Fodder for Nadal fanbase .

It could very well crush Roger for the rest of the year.. Because he probably won't even sniff the type of chance he has here with Nadal playing well below form with blisters and no Djokovic waiting in the finals

Federer is playing till 2016 Olympics, so he said.

He is enjoying himself too much at this point to quit due to a loss, that too in a semi, that too against the one player he has had the most problems against.

Federer won't be crushed. He's looked better than Nadal so far in the tournament.

Ever since his W '12, everything after has been a surprise. His efforts to change coaches, rackets, gameplay, Are all pretty shocking for someone past the twilight of a stellar career. So no, I'm not. he could retire at any moment. Hopefully it's on a high note, as any player would want.

sorry but fed has an almost other worldly attitude to crushing losses even before he had kids....

he doesnt give a damn

he always fights back and faces another day

thats what makes him who he is

the greatest

additionally the guy has accomplished exactly what he set out to do even more in this GS

he has beaten two of the worlds top 10 and had his moments against nadal in the first set

maybe he wins the first and you never know what could have happened after that

you just never know

Honestly, the way he is losing to Nadal, Nadal fans will be worried Fed might retire.

Wasn't even a crushing loss. Wasn't like Fed gave everything, he errored his way out of the tournament. Plus 7-6 6-3 6-3 is not getting crushed.
