Could you send me an email with some information on the filipinos that play in LA if they have a club or not. Also more information the tournaments in San Diego. I am trying to boost the interest of tennis in the central california area (that is where I am originally from). Thanks.

email is: eagpalza@hotmail.com

Sure baseline brawler, I'll guarantee you most of the filipinos in LA & SD have a club.

POGO... it seems that the LA Times article fairly accurately reflects the Pinoy community in that area. While it may not be too far off from making a generalization about the USA community, I think there may be differences in particular issues (such as participation in local politics) when looking at the pockets of Pinoys such as Daly City (CA), Chicago, Honolulu, and Jacksonville.

What I found interesting in the article (and have also found in my experience) is that Filipinos in general are a well-educated and bilingual immigrant group. For example, most nurses in the US are Filipino, particularly in rural and geriatric/gerontologic clinics and rest areas. Most corporate accounting departments have Filipinos in them, particularly in the West and East coasts.

On the other hand, what I've always found perplexing is this: of all the pop subcultures a 2nd generation could emulate (not including their own), I found it interesting that most Fil-Ams look toward the African-American, not just the present hip-hop but going all the way back to the 70s funk etc. When I was at university most Fil-Am students gravitated toward the A-A (even hanging around the A-Phi-A's) but did not see themselves identifying with other Asian groups such as Japanese or Chinese (although, interestingly, quite a few had significant Chinese ancestry). A more recent example of this is G4TV's Street Fury show; notice how most of the girls are Filipina? If you ever visit an import auto show, look at the ethnicity of the models....

Haha, there's a lot of Filipino's and Asians in Washington. A lot of them are here because of stationing and such.

Hahaha, I just dislike the gangster filipinos. I remember during 4th of July, they always have a firework show @ the city beach here, and carnival. I was with my mom, and aunties and such. And I've never seen so many wanna-be gangster filipinos in my whole life.

Hahaha, anyways I would consider myself Asian. Taiwan is right above the Philippines and I'm pretty sure they're considered Asian.

Wow, it's nice to see so many Filipinos represented here.

My parents are from Siquijor and moved to Ohio 30+ years ago where I was born.

One of my best friends here is Filipino and we're going to play tennis in about half an hour.

Ayo-ayo!

BISDAK hurr.....

Made in the Philippines, raised in Florida... Filipinos are good at all the Sports but you would be hard pressed to ever find a world class athlete. but your chances on getting schooled on the b-ball courts, tennis courts, and billiard tables are damned good though.

Manny Paquiao for President, keep whoopin up on those Tijuana Mexicans..!~

until about high school. Of all the filipinos I know, I know only of 5 NCAA athletes in basketball and/or tennis. The best i know is in Div. 1 Tennis and she's half! I'd love to see more filipinos out in the NCAA world. The best I could muster was CIF champion and starting on a community college team.

Why aren't there any pro filipino athletes?

The only filipinos I have seen on ESPN are in billiards and poker.

There are pro Filipino athletes, but they rarely make the news in the pro world. Instead, there's an emphasis on the Olympics and other such events, like the Asian Games. Here's a list of the most well-known Filipino athletes.

We had Lydia de Vega, a runner, and Eric Buhain, a swimmer, in the 80's. Paeng Nepomuceno has six world championships in bowling. The 90's was the era of our boxers; Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco won the 1996 Atlanta Olympics silver medal in the men's light flyweight division, and Luisito Espinosa is a two-time world champion boxer.

Pacquiao's official website is: http://www.mannypacquiao.ph/

POGO...

There have been several Filipino world class athletes before ESPN. Arguably the most famous was Roman Gabriel, ex-LA Rams QB in the 70s. He grew up somewhere in the Carolinas due to his father being stationed there, from what I recall.

Deuce...

No idea except that perhaps it was more phonetically correct? Interestingly, there is no "f" sound in Tagalog; hence, Philippines in Tagalog is Pilipinas and people from there are Pinoys. Not a perpect world....

The country's name "Philippines" is an Anglicization of its original Spanish name "Felipenas," which means Felipe's Country. King Felipe (Philip) of Spain commissioned Ferdinand Magellan to search for new Spice Islands, and in Magellan's travels he came across the island of Cebu. Magellan's successors mapped the surrounding islands and named them in honor of the Spanish king. Thus, Felipenas or Filipinas was created.

The Spaniards who came to colonize the islands and took up residence here were called "Filipinos." Natives of the islands (i.e. the colonized Tagalogs, Cebuanos, etc.) were called "Indios." I think it was only after independence from the Spanish in 1898 that the colonized people were able to appropriate the term "Filipino" for themselves.

so its really supposed to be finoy since theres no f's? kinda weird.
No, the term "Pinoy" comes from "Pilipino," not from "Filipino." There's a difference; in the national language, there are no "F"s, so all "F" sounds were transformed into "P" sounds when the national language was standardized. Hence, "Filipino" became "Pilipino." Still, educated Filipinos are bilingual enough to be able to pronounce "P" and "F" distinctly, although mispronunciation becomes cause for some funny (punny) jokes. ;)

Pinoy is actually a slang term we Filipinos use to call ourselves. I think the word first surfaced some time in the 1960's to 70's and continues to be used in the vernacular. However, it's not the formal international name of our people (which is "Filipino" and appears in encyclopedias and other knowledge bases used around the world).

Pinoy Pride here!

I was born there, but I moved to the States when I was around two and have been living here ever since. I'm from Metro Manila and I haven't visited for about six years. Any Pinoys in the Central Florida area up for hit?

Nice to meet y'all :)

Noelle, isn't there a smattering of Spanish in the Tagalog language? Seems like when was there ages ago, some of the phrases I learned had possibly been derived from Spanish. Just curious.

Yes, that's true. The Spanish were in the Philippines for 400 years; you can't escape the fact that some terms and phrases are going to make it into the common person's vocabulary. :D Back in the 70's, Spanish classes were also required courses in college.

How come the word 'Filipino' isn't spelled with a 'Ph'?
The letter F is on the Spanish alphabet but not on the alphabet used for Tagalog and the dialects used in the country. So I think the word Filipino was carried over when the use of the Spanish alphabet was prevalent.
