Aranxta Sanchez-Vicario: My parents left me broke

Tue, 07 Feb 11:08:00 2012

Four-time Grand Slam winner Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario has claimed she was left broke by her parents, who she says stole her estimated £38 million fortune.

The former world number one makes the claims in an explosive new memoir entitled "Arantxa, Vamos! Memoirs of a struggle, a life and a woman."

The Spaniard won three French Open titles, one US Open, and twice reached the final of both the Australian Open and Wimbledon during a career that reached its peak in the mid-nineties when she topped the world rankings.

She earned close to £10.7m in prize money during her career with her endorsements estimated to have been more than double that amount, leaving her with a fortune of around £38 million, but she now concedes that she is struggling to pay off tax debts to the Spanish authorities.

"My parents made me suffer a lot,” she told Spanish magazine La Otra Conica.

"My parents left me with nothing and now I am indebted to the (tax authorities) and I will not be quiet.

"My mother decided on my hair, my clothes ... When I bought something on my own, she rarely liked it."

"Today, I am without resources."

Sanchez also said that she longer talks to her parents or her brothers Emilio and Javier who are both former players.

Sanchez's mother has since come out and spoken of her pain at the accusations, writing in Spanish newspaper El Mundo, Marisa Vicario Rubio said: " Our daughter Arantxa had gone a step further in her desire to hurt us and humiliate us.

"As we read the article that was published we sunk deeper and deeper into despair, not because of all the lies in it, which came one after another, but more because we realised the actual state of our daughter.

"For 20 years, we put everything aside and forfeited our lives and our marriage for her career.

"I personally escorted her from a very young age to every tournament, leaving my husband and my other children behind.

"Then my husband Emilio quit his job to accompany her and help her.

"We tried to do the best we could. Clearly we failed her…we are accused of leaving her in ruins with the type of a grudge and resentment worthy of your worst enemy."

Sad story. Whatever the truth ,this is one unhappy, dysfunctional family! :(

I would suspect that ASX is telling the truth, and not her parents. Being a former player she would want to still have a good reputation to her name.

I think this is proof that you should never do financial deals within your own family.

It also shows that some young tennis players pushed by their relatives have a very unhappy childhood (if they really have any).

Looking at the words of Arantxa it seems she is a very confused woman. The fact that she has not visited her father who has been very ill for a while now is telling.

And Sanchez's mother says she's "devastated" by her daughter's accusations, and denies that she's broke? Well then, let's open the books up, and find out the truth. (But, thanks to the lawyers, it ain't that easy....)

She was a warrior in court. Hope she can resolve her economic issues, and more important her family situation.

After reading an article on Yahoo about this, Arantxa said that "my properties" are worth less than her brother Emilio's.
She's not broke: she may be cash-poor, but she has assets. I don't know what happened, but she's not destitute like she claims, it seems.

If the article said that, it's incorrect. Arantxa said that about her brother Javier (not Emilio). Javier of course earned only a small fraction of the money she earned when they were both playing, but apparently has a lot more than her now. This may be due to his having much more talent for business, or to his getting a big headstart with his sister's money, or both. Individual property in tightly knit clan systems has always been a bit blurried, particularly for women. In fact married women in Spain (under the Franco regime that started in 1939) could not open their own bank account without written permission from the husband until I think the 60s or 70s.
Of course Arantxa is not "destitute," but she clearly feels she's been royally ripped off by her parents and two of her siblings (Marisa and Javier), and she probably has some legitimate reasons to feel that way.

Emilio made quite a bit of money on his own on the tour - $5,339,395 according to the ATP website. I'm sure he made a lot on endorsements, too. I was surprised when I saw the Javier made almost as much - $4,427,811 - on tour.
