'(On childhood idols) I like Agassi, Sampras. When they left, I watched Federer. The game that he shows, I think, cannot be compared with anything,” the 27-year-old told Championat.

“It’s not that he remains an idol. But I would like to play with him. I have looked at him since childhood, as he performed. So I’m interested in playing with him myself.

“It’s phenomenal, I would say. And in the form in which he keeps himself, this is a rarity. I don’t know how he can keep himself in such physical shape. He moves great, move like that at 40! This is phenomenal, I think so.”

See this is the thing that's going to keep Fed in the discussion for probably ever. He encompassed a very dominant stretch all on his own and has maintained a presence for two decades now. That is greatly underscored by pencil pushers attempting to update for the future. Nadal will remain clay heavy while Novak will have a marginalized fandom. The people saying the GOAT debate will go on forever were right.

See this GOAT debate with the 3 candidates is something that will always diminish Fed's role as the GOAT specifically because of the weak era when he did not have a decent competition, and his prolonged retirement or farewell phase when his injuries and COVID19 delayed it and the ATP ranking measures (due to COVID19) protected his place among the top 10 (in reality #620+). In addition, big contracts with the sponsors kept him relevant. Including the period from 2017-2018 when Djok was injured he immediately scored 3 more GSs. Fedr is a remnant of a transitional era between the ATGs from the 90's and the Big 2 of today. He remains the 3rd Wheelerer. As long as the debate keeps on going he ain't IT! EOD.

That's just not the way the money circulates. Fed continues and likely will continue for a while to outsell the Nadal/Novak brands. It's like Arnold Palmer lol. But seriously, Fed was the only big guy from 2004-2009. Yes Nadal had 08 but it just didn't track as much and keep in mind that was an extremely tight Wimbledon and he went on to get beat by Murray at the USO and then Soderling the following year at the French. Then he has his 2010 and Novak arrives in 2011. Nadal's biggest issue has been the inability to string along a stretch of dominance. Over time people don't remember weak/strong eras, they see dominance. And in one of Nadal's best seasons of 2017 he was overshadowed by Fed who had a greater concentration of victories and went 3-0 against him.

I think Nadal was a lot bigger than you're giving him credit for. Even before 2008.

Been watching tennis since the mid 90s and was following Federer from when he beat Sampras. I also started attending events live in 03. Here's the deal with Nadal, prior to 07 he was a clay wunderkind like Becker on grass but Federer was a monster and most people thought it a matter of time until he'd win the French. After 07 it started looking like Nadal would take over. What exactly am I missing?

It's such an utilitarian view on things. Outselling anything better than someone else is meaningless in sport in terms of an athlete's legacy! The legacy is what counts NOT current annual sales projections. Once all done and dusted Fed WILL REMAIN the 3rd wheel. Both, Nadl and Djok will have more than 20 plus the rest of the records. All you guys can do for the time being is participate in discussions on online forums where, from the security and comfort of your basements, you may try to troll from time to time. But that's about it. If that's what makes you tick - by all means. A contrarian (such is myself) needs people like you so he can point his f finger and say - you are the Fed's guy!

Right now though he's one of those first 2 wheels. I know it seems inevitable that Djokovic will pass him, but you really never know with tennis.

Ultronians are so READY lol. Yall trip me out :) yall been waiting to pop bottles for 10 years.
It has been a long time but that's OK. They had such a big head start, Look up how many he had when Djok won his first, then 2 yrs have passed while Djok was trying to figure what kind of head he had upon his shoulders etc. you know the drill. And since 2011 the real journey has began . Firstly it was to win another one, then a few more then the MOST. By end of this year the finish line seems right there. Let's continue in December 2021 with this convo :)

Yeah it's incredible how Djokovic caught up tbh.
