Legend
Marrakech brings back distant memories for me...a long strange trip from London via jet and a week there and on the Atlantic coast nearby, my curiosity piqued a bit by this song:

Ah, I was in Marrakech for about a week too end of '14, travelled east over the Atlas mountains to the Sahara as well as west to Essaouira on the Atlantic coast. Loved the architecture, bread, mint tea and tagines of course. Your french should have came in handy, no?

Was that before colour TV was invited and jets refueled every 2000km?

:D
Not quite...about 11 years after my last non-jet Transatlantic flight (20 hours total) from New Jersey to Paris with pit stops in Gander Newfoundland and Shannon Ireland. We were a B&W TV family before I left and color when I came back seven years later via a Boeing 707 in 6.5 hours.

London to Marrakech direct was only 3 hours or so but the return flight stopped in Tangiers and customs officers there were ferociously snoopy about young Americans going back to Europe from there. Add in 2 hours easy.

tricky... not really the easiest draw grigor could expect in such a tournament !
Bottom half definitely would have been more to Grigor's liking, but one match their is a great one in the first round; Coric vs. Schwartzman. Bad luck for Coric:confused: in particular as the Schwartz was in strong form on South American clay recently.

2 QFs and a R16 and the biggest win was vs Delbonis...meh.

Coric was a finalist last year in Marrakech, losing to the same Delbonis .

I give a slight edge to Coric if he plays like amor y paz.

Why does the guy to the right look like a well tanned Jack Sock?

Thiem has set a new standard in vulturing and Grigs taking notes it appears (the old wildcard in as #1 seed trick).:D Grigs must be some kind of a God down there as he's the best player (judging on previous finals) that's ever played at the Grand Prix Hassan.

"We're not going to Morocco! We're going to Marrakesh!"

LOL

In the end Saffy was covered in honey all over and a Dimitrov lookalike winked at her the next morning. [emoji8]

Coric playing nicely, but was down 2-0 facing Bps and again at 3-1. Coric wins set 6-3 with 5 straight games in a row. Diego just can't quite break him and had at least 3 points to get back on serve. Diego screams at end of set after going 1 of 14 on BPs.

Moroccan lightning strikes twice as Delbonis retires down a set and 0-1 in the second set to El Amrani

Any word on his cause for throwing the towel in???

Gotta be tough for Grano to get right back out there for his dubs match partnering Marc Lopez vs GGL/Schwartzman. Diego is smarting too but at least his bad loss was to last year's finalist and not a teen ranked just inside #1K.

Another bit of an upset closes action today with qualifier Quinzi knocking off veteran PHM, saving 14 of 16 BPs in the 7-6 6-3 win. Quinzi cashed in on 3 of 8 break chances himself. He also had 14 aces on the slow clay, almost as many as all seven other players in action today.

With 3 QFs and a Wimby title in the junior slams in '13, Quinzi was looked upon during his junior career as a top candidate to follow in a certain fellow lefty's footsteps. Very little has panned out as of yet, especially compared to the crew of juniors from that year (Zverev, Kyrgios, Coric, Khachanov, Nishioka, Edmund, Chung, Kokkinakis). This was his first ATP level match and win. Long overdue.

When Diego Schwartzman's a rocking!

Schwartzman is out, though.
If Dimitrov manages to lose this..........
I think he's plenty capable of that :D
On a serious note, even if he's the favourite, the field is not to be underestimated. Ramos-Vinolas can be a serious threat on Clay and anyone between Coric, Vesely and to a lesser extent Quinzi may GOAT his way to the Title. Luckily those are all in the other half of the Draw, but we never know. Heck, even Robredo may have a shot at sending him home if he finds a grain of his old form! I don't know if he ever won two matches in a row since his return from injury, but he still is an expert veteran, a more than decent Clay-Courter and someone you need to beat playing with consistency; plus, at least for what concerns the first set, Stakhovsky didn't really make him sweat.

Hopefully Dimitrov will win and show me that between his resurgence and his poor Indian Wells and Miami performances the latter have been the exceptions.

If Robredo were to win vs The Young Camel Jockey, it would be Tommy's first winning streak at ATP level since Shenzhen'15.

Quinzi? You think he can win the title? Has he even won an ATP match before in his life?

Wow, really? Both native wildcards win their opening matches against Granollers and Delbonis? And here I thought, here's a couple more fodder home tournament opponents.

At times you can witness pure craziness in these Tournaments. He won Wimbledon Junior and looked very promising, then suddenly disappeared from the scene. I don't know if he'll ever become a steady Top 100 Player or something and I honestly don't care, but I don't see why he wouldn't GOAT his way to an ATP 250 once.

EDIT: By the way I didn't say he's one of the favourites for the Title or anything, just that he's a possible threat. If you read my comment again I said that Coric, Vesely or TO A LESSER EXTENT Quinzi MAY have a godlike week which is what one of them would need to get past Ramos-Vinolas first and then Dimitrov or whoever the other Runner-Up may be, and that's just because you never know with these Players.
