Even though he was playing the tournament of his life, Federer would have beaten Verdasco in the Australian Open final for sure even if Verdasco had beaten Nadal. I dont get why people act like that was a missed opportunity for Verdasco other than the opportunity to be in a slam final. Probably would have been straight sets for Federer in fact, but 1 set for Verdasco in the final at absolute most. It was a missed opportunity for Federer that Verdasco couldnt sneak that match out as he had to play his nightmare in the final.
The reasons Verdasco would have had no chance in the final:
1. Verdasco beating Nadal and Federer back to back in a slam semi and final. Just no. Verdasco also took 5 sets to beat a sick Murray in the round of 16, so even god mode Verdasco is quite beatable, especialy for someone like Federer on a hard court.
2. Federer's mental blockage vs Nadal was evident once again in the final. He has no such issues with his pigeon Verdasco, and in good form would have been supremly confident of crushing him, irregardless how well Verdasco was playing.
3. Verdasco's fitness is reasonably good, nothing noteable either way really, but is obviously nowhere near Nadal's level. Nadal is one of the only ones who could play such a semifinal and recover to win the final. Verdasco would have been feeling that semifinal in the final and likely rubber legged and half useless after the 2 hour mark (if they were still playing at that point), or even sooner.
4. Federer in the form he was in at the 2009 Australian Open is even harder to beat for most everyone else than Nadal, even though Nadal himself was in excellent form. Nadal was able to win the final due to a combination of the matchup, his own very high playing level, and his determination to win.
5. Federer was as close or closer to winning the final than Verdasco was the semifinal in many ways, despite the lopsided 5th set of the final vs the semifinal. Federer actually could have won the final in 4 sets. Verdasco could have only possibly won late in the 5th set and given that Nadal is physically and mentally stronger than Verdasco by a good margin, or stronger than anyone really, he was unlikely to even do that.
