Nadal V Verdasco AO09 is one of greatest matches of all time imo. It had it all, two guys at the zenith of their respective games. One with supreme attack mode activated, and the other with extreme defense mode on full blast.

Longest match also in AO, and hardly any blips or lapses. Just insane tennis. If they had the roof over that court, that would have been the match to blow it right off imo.

Losing 0-6 1-6 to Nadal in the Monte Carlo Final 2010.

Seriously though, his matches against Murray, Tsonga and Nadal at the 09 AO would be the best he has ever played and probably the best he will ever play.

Watching the highlights of the AO 09 semi. Verdasco played the match of his life, took Nadal to 5 sets, then lost it on a double fault. Sums up his career, really.

Just got to be the 2009 AO semi against Nadal. I have never seen him play to that level since then.

I sometimes think losing that epic kind of broke his spirit. He's never made it that far in a Slam since!

Why asking a question with such an obvious answer ? I mean we all know he's a player capable of doing mostly anything on a given day, not say a natural god given talent for nr1 but ok, a guy who i a heavy pro and on tour for a decade.

AO 09 was a special match because he really did play his best tennis and made even better and more talented opponent play one of his best matches in order to go to final.

For me the highlight is the match itself It was more than great Verdasco - and I say so because he'd trash anyone else with the level of play and shots he made on that day and the talk would not be on him and his play - cause he'd not get in the position to show 30% of what he showed back than vs the nr1 at the time.

Tnx

I agree Verdasco playing his best at AO09.

I wonder why his tennis fell off the map? Could it be the new racquet? Is he still training with team Aiddas and Gil Reyes in Vegas?

IMO he is the rare spaniard who grew up playing hard courts and he really did put up a show back then but ... his tennis never fell off completely .. he just peaked then and maybe a couple of months later ...

Even though he was playing the tournament of his life, Federer would have beaten Verdasco in the Australian Open final for sure even if Verdasco had beaten Nadal. I dont get why people act like that was a missed opportunity for Verdasco other than the opportunity to be in a slam final. Probably would have been straight sets for Federer in fact, but 1 set for Verdasco in the final at absolute most. It was a missed opportunity for Federer that Verdasco couldnt sneak that match out as he had to play his nightmare in the final.

The reasons Verdasco would have had no chance in the final:

1. Verdasco beating Nadal and Federer back to back in a slam semi and final. Just no. Verdasco also took 5 sets to beat a sick Murray in the round of 16, so even god mode Verdasco is quite beatable, especialy for someone like Federer on a hard court.

2. Federer's mental blockage vs Nadal was evident once again in the final. He has no such issues with his pigeon Verdasco, and in good form would have been supremly confident of crushing him, irregardless how well Verdasco was playing.

3. Verdasco's fitness is reasonably good, nothing noteable either way really, but is obviously nowhere near Nadal's level. Nadal is one of the only ones who could play such a semifinal and recover to win the final. Verdasco would have been feeling that semifinal in the final and likely rubber legged and half useless after the 2 hour mark (if they were still playing at that point), or even sooner.

4. Federer in the form he was in at the 2009 Australian Open is even harder to beat for most everyone else than Nadal, even though Nadal himself was in excellent form. Nadal was able to win the final due to a combination of the matchup, his own very high playing level, and his determination to win.

5. Federer was as close or closer to winning the final than Verdasco was the semifinal in many ways, despite the lopsided 5th set of the final vs the semifinal. Federer actually could have won the final in 4 sets. Verdasco could have only possibly won late in the 5th set and given that Nadal is physically and mentally stronger than Verdasco by a good margin, or stronger than anyone really, he was unlikely to even do that.

He wouldn't have beaten Roddick either. Too weak mentally.

Yeah you are probably right, although he wouldnt have even played Roddick. I have seen some people say Verdasco would have won the Australian Open that year by beating Federer in the final had he beaten Nadal though, and that is a total joke, and that is from someone who cant stand Federer.

Even though he is Nadal's lapdog to the highest degree as well, atleast in some of his matches with Nadal on hard courts he can go on the offensive in over half the points, theoretically giving him some chance to win in some of their matches on that surface (though being the mental midget he is, it never works out that way, except this one match he was in with a chance). Against Federer he is constantly on the D, and Verdasco isnt even a good defensive player or able to ever win that way.

Weak! Verdasco is a weak opponent. Federer would have crushed him.

I dont care that his semi final AO match was the longest. I think this USO match was better in that he stepped up from losing the first 2 sets and still taking the win with an incredible match point winner. how can you say the AO match is verdascos best match if he lost it? indeed he played well but obviously not good enough that nadal beat him. from nadals point of view, it was one of his best match as well as the final in that AO. forget the fact that it was a semifinal, 1st round, 2nd round or any of that. this USO match from verdascos POV had him hitting crazy balls and was definetly one of his best match.
