Big 10 Tennis

The Big 10 Conference draw has been posted. Here is the link:

http://www.gophersports.com//pdf8/760615.pdf[/IMG]

Illinois is really paying the price for dropping down the standings as they have a pretty tough opener against Michigan and then OSU.

The Golden Gophers of Minnesota have a great chance to avenge their loss to Indiana in the semis. They will need to be ready to play, however as Wisconsin is dangerous, especially at home. Either way, Minnesota or Indiana has a great chance to grab second place which is what everyone is playing for at this point.

Im a Hoosier so I root for them but I cannot say enough how they have exceeded my wildest expectations this year, I had them as an outside shot at making the NCAA's. Even if it falls apart now I am satisfied with their season. Without Goransson who left the team I dont see them finishing 2nd.

What happened to Goransson?

All credit to Indiana, they were great all year and improved dramatically. With that news and Gallego back in the lineup for Minnesota, that should tip the scales to The Golden Gophers, who are now ranked 19th. They just need to be ready for Wisconsin.

Michigan against Illinois will be very interesting.

Live Stats / Video

Any Badger fans out there that can provide info on whether there is live stats or streaming available of the matches?

I don't think gophers have enough money to put in any live video cams...

Minnesota certainly doesn't have the money to install video cams at the University of Wisconsin, where the Big 10 tournament is being held, although I am sure that the Wisconsin Badgers would think that this would be a nice gesture.

Thanks for being more on the ball than Fedace. Minnesota has live stats and video streaming.

And thanks for finding the live stats feed.

Goransson decided it wasnt for him, didnt travel last weekend and have to assume he is not at WI.

U of Minnesota has 2.22 billion dollar endowment and tennis is actually a pretty big sport there with a great attendance record.....you and thinking is as dangerous a combination as it gets

If the Baseline Tennis Facility at the U of Minn is reflective of the endowment, then I could definitely see interest in the sport.

Got to play there last summer during a conference, and it's a beautiful facility.

Hoping they go depp in the tourney..

Are they playing the tournament indoors at Nielsen or outdoors? There are 12 indoor courts and only 6 outdoor, last time I was there. Maybe they are using both.

it's been overcast and drizzling in Madison today, when I was there earlier they were using 8 of the indoor courts and the others were for practice

Kind of off topic but how will Nebraska tennis fit in next season? Do they have a program that can challenge the big 10 schools?

I'm guessing they'll be anywhere from 6-9. But, the range could even be 5-10.

In the most current ITA Team rankings, Nebraska is No. 39.

Ohio St. is No. 3
Illinois is No. 18
Minnesota is No. 19
Indiana is No. 26
Michigan is No. 28

[Nebraska is No. 39]

Michigan St. is No. 50
Purdue is No. 66
Iowa is No. 69
Wisconsin is No. 71.

The rest of the schools - Northwestern and Penn St, are unranked.

Based just on ITA rankings, Nebraska would have been 6th this year. But, schools become more bunched talent-wise as you move down the rankings so while rankings are a starting point and you can get a general idea of where they might fall, we can't know for sure. Also, obviously, it matters what recruits are coming in and what players are leaving for all of the Big 10 teams.

Minnesota beat Nebraska fairly easily, 6-1.

Nebraska beat Wisconsin 5-2.

Take from this what you will.

Maybe not a tennis power, but overall a great athletic department and a proud sporting tradition and a very good university. A nice addition to the Big 10.

Thanks. Nice run down. I have always been a Nebraska Cornhusker Fan. All sports. I am excited for the move to the Big 10. Looking at the roster for Neb, looks like they have a number of non americans on the team. Seems to be the trend.

They have great, new facilities right in the heart of campus. More importantly, they have a great, young coach who now has the program back to a position of strength. (Minnesota has a long history of solid success in tennis).

with a nice recruiting class coming in next year, The Golden Gophers should be strong for the foreseeable future.

I don't know how much the endowment has to do with the cash for facilities. Over the past decade, it seems that the university has really got behind facility improvment and expansion for revenue and non-revenue sports alike.

Minnesota is in the middle of a pretty big city and metro area, so these improvements not only benefit the team and the university community but a much larger cross section of the public.

For such a cold climate, the Twin Cities is a fairly strong tennis community and there are many interested parties for great facilities -- students and alums, fans, and even the general public who can use the Baseline Tennis Center at certain times. The BTC isn't just home to the Gophers, a lot of different people and groups from the community utilize the facilities.

It should be noted that the University of Minnesota for a long time has had the Baseline Club, which is basically a booster club for tennis, similar to how college football has boosters, but obviously on a smaller scale. They deserve much of the credit for raising the money for such a great facility. Thought the univerisity kicked in some money, a lot of money came from private donations, and many of those donations came via the Baseline Club.

Starting to look like the ILL-Mich match may come down to the 6th singles spot. King up on Nevolo 4-1 in the 3rd set.

Illinois squeaks it out 4-3.

We're so spoiled, a NCAA championship in 2003, runner up a few years ago, never worse than 2nd in the last 15 years in the Big 10, always ranked in the top 15 but this is so sad to see them struggle like this. Now they get waxed by OSU and won't get to host a regional in quite a while. :(

Minnesota blanks Wisconsin

As a die hard Golden Gopher fan it is always sweet to beat Wisconsin........in anything. Goldy put a butt whipping on Bucky today in tennis. I only wish it would have lasted long enough for Tobias Wernet to finish off Michalaka and get another boost in the rankings. Wernie is on fire right now.

Alright - now we get our shot at the Hoosiers.

Maybe these Gophers are now worthy enough to hit with Tonylars now ???:)

Minnesotar takes the doubles point which could be huge.

I think it will be huge as it is always tough to win 4 of 6 singles matches. If my memory is correct however, I think Minnesota won the doubles point when Indiana beat them in the regular season.

Wow - the Gophers/Indiana match is a dogfight. Gophers got the doubles point and have a chance to take 3 of the singles matches. Should be an interesting finish.

Goransson leaving meant Vogl had to move up to #5 and he has struggled, he was on fire for a while at 6.

Impressive Victory

The Golden Gophers were very impressive today - dominating the match against an opponent who defeated them a few weeks ago.

Typical victory - winning at the bottom of the lineup along with red hot tobias wernet at 1. He is playing as well as anybody in the Big 10 (not named Buchanan or Rola).

They have gotten steadily better all year and are playing their best right now. Unfortunately, they are not good enough to have a chance tomorrow but this should help their seeding in the NCAAs.
