Can Blake be #1 by the end of the year?

He played so good tonight that I was wondering, who else would like to see him at number 1. I'd love to hear Blake say, "Dude I rule," in that surfer accent he has.

Would love to see him there...but Roger is way ahead of the pack!

Blake is such a nice guy and a great inspiration for folks making a comeback...

I just hope he doesnt give-in like he did with Agassi at US Open!

Go Blake!! =D>

He's nowhere near Federer's level. But if he continues with this hot streak, he could close in on the top 5 definitely. If he starts losing first rounds like earlier in the year, it's not going to happen.

He will be No:1 for sure. All it requires is for Federer, Nadal, Hewitt,Ljubicic to get injured. Roddick is very generous these days and hence James shouldnt have too much trouble with him. USTA can also work on the draw to ensure that Marat is on other side.

Reality is Federer is unreachable. Blake doesnt have the game to tackle federer or the likes at Wimbledon. French is anyway out of reach. Aus open is already gone. That leaves US open as his real chance. One cant be a #1 by winning just one slam.

However Blake has very good chance to be in top 5. He is playing a top 5 game.

I'd be satisfied if he could make it to number 3 and take out Roddick in atleast one tournament. Number 1, nah, not unless he makes a huge break through on clay, and then pulls off a mind blowing grass season. Even then, I don't think he will catch up with Federer.

you're just dreaming. there´s absolutely NO chance that he can make it to #1. Perhaps if he hires some mafia guys to make rafa and fed to disappear... ;)

It would be nice for him to be at top spot, but that is Federer's for a long time. Top 5 is as far as Blake can go this year in my opinion. His consistence is a problem for him, but if he can play well for the whole year, he will get into the top 5.

I love James Blake's game, the speed, the rocket forehand, the attitude, the all court game...

but Federer is from another universe. As impressive as Blake's game can be, Federer hits shots that make my jaw drop. Federer also doesn't seem to sweat and his sneakers don't squeak. Has anyone checked to make sure he isn't just some CG-generated artifact?

Can Blake become #1 by the end of the year? No, Federer can miss a full season and he'll still be number 1. Scary isn't?

Well, it depends on which level of Federer Blakes meets on a given day. The Blake of this tournament could definitely beat the Federer at this year's Aussie as well as the Federer from the Rochus match. But if Federer is on--I mean, no errors, excellent aggression plus stellar defense--NO ONE can beat him. I'd wager no one in history could beat him. (I'll except Laver here because I just don't know enough about him.)

Blake is too inconsistent to be number 1. On good days he can beat many players on fast courts but on bad days he can also lose to many players on fast courts. He hasn't played on slow courts in a while but his results in the AO don't exactly make me confident that he will be able to dominate on slower courts.

federer is sitting at 6000-odd points, nadal is at 4000-odd. then comes roddick, at 2000-odd points, so blake will get no higher then no.3 if he wins just about every tourney this year.

I'd say Blake has a Wimbledon or US Open in him, but only one. Hey if Gaudio could do it on a favorite surface of his, I'm sure Blake can do the same. Number one this year, definitely not. Number one sometime in the next ten years? Unlikely, but I wouldn't entirely rule it out.

Nope no way. He gets too down if he is behind. He mentally loses points and matches he should win. He hits the ball too flat against top spin and slice artists that move him around the court.

It's foolish to say that Blake will never win a Slam or will never be #1. Who knows what will happen in the future. He's shown that he has the game to take out pretty much everyone except Federer. What if Fed gets injured next year? A bit of luck and he could certainly win a Slam.

Blake showed hints of championship form in yesterday's match against Federer. It's too soon to say if his problem is psychological or he needs more top flight match play. I'd guess the latter. Of course, he is severely disadvantaged. He went to Harvard. Only if he'd been raised English would he have a bigger curse.

My friend has just informed me that the only way Blake will take over number one this year is by planting some racquets in RF, RN, and AR. :)

Blake is older than Federer, and Nadal is 5 years younger than Federer. I also do not believe Blake will in a GS title unless he gets a great draw and doesn't have to play Fed.

James will not reach the Top 5 unless he can do something on clay. There are a bunch of claycourt guys who are going to pick up a bunch of points between Miami and Wimbledon. If James can do that, he has a chance at Top 5. It's very possible he'll stay Top 10 if he continues to do well on hardcourts.

But I really think the next guy who is going to challenge Fed and Nadal for a top spot, i.e., 1 or 2, will not be Blake.

I wonder if Blake will go down the path of roddick, obsessed with beating federer. Mentally he was not stable in the past few years before his injury, made a lot of unforced errors in tough or important situations. He seems to be a lot more stable in this tournament, perhaps due to his high spirit and confidence that he got from beating the top players. Let's hope that federer had not crush blake's spirit and confidence like what he did to roddick.

I think James has the potential to become America's #1 player and star and crack into the Top 5, but the only player I see even possibly taking the #1 in world spot from Federer is Nadal.

I respect his passion and spunk in him but I doubt he will be #1. A little suspicious yesterday. I was disappointed but then again RF showed him up and totally crushed him in 3rd set.

Blake #1 get serious no way in hell blake will ever be #1.I will say he has improved+he does play nadal tough. But what you saw against fed was typical blake, had the first set in the bag + then choked+ that was it.All he did was ruin what could have been a real final,by beating nadal.Fed + his fans should be thanking blake.

There’s a lot of optimism on this board. No, Blake will never be No.1 ever, unless he and Fed switched bodies.

In order Blake becomes No1, Federer must become No 2 or 3. But watching game of both makes clear that class of Federer's game is much higher.

So I see no chances for Blake to become No 1 whenever.

I was wondering, would Blake play well on grass courts? He has a power game and Roddick was once a power player who used to be successful on grass, so wouldnt that mean that Blake would have similar success? Im just asking because I am not really sure what qualities are best on grass court.

The way James fell apart against Federer in that first set after leading 4-1, you have to be smoking crack pipe to seriously consider him to be #1 material. He started doublefaulting and missing 3.0 putaways. It was painful to watch, especially when the guy is so likable. Fed ate him alive, an judging by the way Blake lost it out there, James is not going anywhere further than top 5 anytime soon. Especially with clay season coming up.
