Where is the option for Bartoli? It's my first post and I am hoping to find a large group of likeminded Bartoli fans.

I like Bartoli! but you will encounter nothing but hatred for the WTA on these boards in general, so you probably won't find many bartoli fans. maybe the boards on tennis forum.com (minus the space) would be kinder.

I know that people will think I am nuts, but my favorite players are not on this poll...for instance...Bryan Bros, Stepanek, Llodra, Paes, Nestor, Zimonjic. I could go on, but the underlying theme for me is net play. Singles, doubles, I love it all...but you have to get to net. I watch and love all tennis...but for me, they don't have to be media darlings to like them. That's it...let the bashing begin!

My favorites are Nadal and Murray (can't wait for the final tomorrow!) but I like other players on the list. The only one that gets on my nerves is Tsonga and I find Roddick's tennis somewhat boring (one-dimensional?). Blake is a nice guy but I've always prefered thinkers (people who construct their points) to ballbashers and maybe that's why Safin is not on my list either as I consider him to be in that category.

At first I thought the commonality was that the calm, serious minded tennis players are fine but the ones who show lots of emotion or personality are no good. But that doesn't quite work, does it? Federer is still calm, but Roddick is slipping and so is Murray. Then on the emotionality, Blake does not fit in. So I am lost regarding your likes and dislikes.

Could you elaborate, please. I like to hear what people like or dislike about players.

I like Djokovic for some reason. I'm not sure but I think it's because of his beautiful double-handed backhand, I really want to hit the ball like that myself. Also I like his baseline game.
I usually don't like to admit I like him since he retires from so many matches and his team is acting rude towards his opponents sometimes.

Hey............thats what coming out of the closet is all about. Be honest and tell us about the players you like. I guess its O.K. to identify players you don't like, but that was not how I set up this thread. I wanted it to be positive and not another flame war.

I love Joker, yes i like his backhand, but I find him to be a funny fun loving guy which seals it for me!

The set up on a poll only allows for 10 entries. I guess I should have had an entry for other. Well, next time. I just learned how to set up a poll.

I love federer ofcourse. He's my favorite player. I also like Safin, mostly for his game. When its on, he's amazing. I wish he could win one more slam before he retires, but that's unlikely. His on court antics are amusing as well. I also like nadal, but mostly for his character and not his game. I'm starting to like Murray, but he still needs to work on his temper. Of course, I really roddick as well. I'm indifferent to his tennis skills, but his personality is just hilarious. His press conferences are amazing and I always get a laugh from his interviews. He also does seem like a nice guy off court.

Djokovic is my favourite undoubtedly. I watched him first in the quallies at Rome in 2006 - I had previously been chatting to him and his Team because they were staying in the same Hotel as myself in Rome, so when I saw him playing against an italian (Aldi), and the entire Rome crowd, I went to sit with them and give him some moral spport, and I've been supporting him ever since. On court, I love his backhand, his accuracy, the fact that he thinks on court, and isn't scared to change his gameplan halfway through a match if things aren't working. Also, the fact he always applauds an opponent's good shot and warmly congratulates them at the end. Off court, I love his sense of humour, his warmth, his intelligence, and the fact that he has time for people, and does a lot of charity work for kids back home in Serbia (most of which he prepers to keep unpublicised).

I always love to watch Federer, because he has such a beautiful, graceful, artistic game to watch, and has always been a great ambassador for the sport.

And not on the list - just have to mention Tipsarevic. He is THE most frustrating player to support - often losing to opponents he is expected to beat, whilst playing like the world's best against higher ranked ones. Supporting him is a bit of a roller-coaster ride, but I am a mere woman  and I can't deny that my support for him is very much as a "fangirl" Well - at least I'm honest!

A great gesture. He is one of the very few players to do that. Right now, I can't think of any player who had done that because I would have noticed.

Thats what I like also. Its a matter of personality. Ice cold dedicated tennis players can play by themselves, as far as I am concerned. I don't want to take the time, or spend the money to watch them. To me it really is not whether you win or lose. Its how you play the game.

I'm O.K. with Federer but my gf really likes his style of play, just as you describe it. Graceful, flowing strokes. Almost a ballet, she says.

I agree with the Federer ballet aswell, in his way of moving he is one of a kind and some of the shots he does with his forehand are just from another planet. I just can't get myself to root for him in his big matches. Maybe it's because he almost never is the underdog and I usually have more sympathy for them...

My favourites are Hewitt, Berdych, Almagro, Gasquet, and Guccione, adding on to these who were in the poll.

Safin - pure entertainment, beautiful strokes off both sides and good personality off court.

Murray - since his win over Hewitt at the SAP Open a few years ago took a liking to him, plays much like Hewitt with potential for a career as good as him, possibly the smoothest slice for a two hander I've ever seen.

Baghdatis - Too charismatic not to like, smooth, clean strokes as well.

Tsonga - Once again, beating Hewitt in Queens caught my attention, but that Aussie Open run was just magical and one of the best all around players today, great from all areas of the court and great personality as well :).

Breaker, I was trying to figure out the common thread for your liking the players you list. My first thought was and obvious one - Australia (Hewitt, Guccione, Baghdatis and Tsonga who did wonders at the AO, and Murray as you stated). But then I remembered Almagro, Berdych, and Gasquet and that blew that theory.

Thanks for the comments on the players on my list but could you tell us why you are big on the other ones. Just curious.

not a criticism to your poll... i know its not possible to make more choices...

i just felt i should make that "others" statement!

Hey thats fine. I see others are doing the same thing. To me a calm atmosphere where people praise the players they like is much more pleasant, particularly when they say something about players who are not the top 2 or even 3. There is too much that has been said about them so I thought I would encourage a discussion about other players that we like.

I am not a big Federer fan. I find him too dull, probably for reasons you state, but there is one amazing shot that he makes that I have noted over and over again. I saw someone do it recently, but can't remember who that was.

The shot is forehand hit to the cross court, the ad court, which he will hit several times at a level speed and then, with absolutely no apparent change in his swing he suddenly hits it much, much harder. The opponent get blown off the court. It works every time.

I really like Roddick. He seems like such a real person; the type of guy you could share a pint with. But I don't particularly care for his game. Reminds me of mine. Big serve; lousy ground strokes. I never expected my opponent to return the serve so was never ready for the return. Oh, well. Not much similarity with Roddick, I know.

His groundstrokes looked pretty good at San Jose; looks like he's still working on his game, which is a good sign.

i should also add to my list for obvious reasons the players from my country, Gil, Machado, Elias, De Brito, Neuza Silva... you get it...

You forgot Federer, i know you love Federer !!!!!, i can saw that between lines on each thread or post that you shared to us.

Comon say , YESSSSSS I DO !!!! you can do it..

Like: Djokovic, Nadal, Murray, Baghdatis
Don't like: Federer, Roddick, Tsonga
You like Nadal? Why? The only quality in Nadal that I like is his total dedication to perseverance.

When I was younger, I had great legs and I used to run down a lot of balls that my oponents did not expect me to get. My fondest memory was getting to a ball almost off the court on the ad side from way on the right side. I am a rightie and when I got to the ball and returned it, my oponent was walking back toward the service line. He was shocked that I got it. Can't say thats much in common with Nadal though.

I like Tsonga’s fireworks, Baghdatis’s attitude, Murray’s versatility, aesthetics in Federer’s game.
I don’t really care for Djokovic. Nor Safin but I like the guy. I used to like Roddick, now I just don’t believe in him anymore, same goes with Blake.
Nadal's game is only interesting for his competitiveness, so I need a good matchup to make it exciting. I don’t like Del Potro’s game.
I often root for the underdog as well. I love all court tennis so I am not always a fan of today’s game actually but I keep watching tennis, it’s still worth it. The contradiction is that Bjorn Borg is my all time favourite.
