Hahahaha this just adds to the icing on the cake of this year. Poor Murray can't even play the match to become number one, gets it on a walkover.

Very deserving number one but this takes away from it so much. No celebration at the end of the match knowing he's number one, instead will walk out on court in the final as the number 1.

Well done Andy. Fully deserved. Long live the king.

With the amount of matches Murray has played this year, having a day off a week before the WTF could make all the difference to his chances of winning that event.

As for tomorrow. He shouldn't have any trouble taking out Isner.

From 2004.

The world no1 crown has been transferred from Federer to Nadal, back to Federer again, back to Nadal again, transferred to Djokovic, back to Federer again, back to Djokovic again, back to Nadal again, back to Djokovic again, transferred to Murray for the first time ever.

I guess the fighting is not over yet.

Huge congrats indeed although I'm not gonna lie, I'm absolutely stunned. I did think even earlier in the season that he'd have a good shot at getting there in the first half of 2017 but never would I have imagined he'd do it this year considering Djokovic held all 4 majors just five months ago! Absolutely amazing. And I don't want to hear other Nole fans making excuses and disparaging the achievement either. At the end of the day it's not Murray's problem if his biggest rivals aren't performing as well, all he can do is focus on his own game, put in the hard work and go out there and get the results and oh boy has he been doing that the last seven months - his consistency has been simply sensational. It also has to be said that he deserves a huge amount of credit when you take into account where he was this time two years ago. I suspect I was one of many tennis fans that thought he might be finished as a top player but seeing how he's bounced back since then tells you a helluva lot about the man's character and his incredible resilience.

Massive respect to you and your team Andy - you deserve it mate. :)

Absolutely delighted that Murray has got #1. So many people trying to say players like Hewitt or Roddick or even Wawrinka are better than him because of various achievements but this cements his place as a member of the Big 4. 3 slams. 2 Olympic golds and World #1

Vamos Murray!

Wow it's officially the Big Four indeed. :)

9-2
9-4
7-2

25-8 :D;)

Wait, is this H2H? You mean, the thing that Djokovic leads Nadal in?

Or were you just counting 'Slam H2H'? In which case, why not just count 'H2H where the matches were played on clay in Rome, and the ambient temperature averaged 32.6 degrees and in which matches both players wore blue shorts and a backwards cap'.

My point is: H2H is H2H. Don't try to narrow the scope of the H2H in whatever way that make your hero appear better.

Duplicate thread but Murray deserves it. He's been waiting for this moment for a long time, much longer than the time to win his 1st slam. Congratulation for becoming the 26th ATP number one player.

Classic real life example how to reach top spot.

Let others players(Querrey,Del Potro,Wawrinka,Bautista and Cilic) do the dirty job for me. And I(Murray in this case), will continue beat the crap out Berdych and others mugs..

Definitively like RF 2009 French Open scenario. This year 1-3 h2h Djokovic,1-1 Nadal , 0-0 Federer , 2-1 Nishikori , 1-1 Cilic and 1-1 Del Potro. He didn't DOMINATE any real players. Awful No.1

Murray at number 1 is pretty awful for tennis, but as a Fed fan I guess I can't complain the Djominance has been broken.

Yep congrats. You can only beat who's put in front of you.
I personally think Raonic would have been tough, but Murray has the skills and drive now to beat such opponents.
Incidentally as I tuned into the Murray / Berdych match the commentators were talking of pigeons :) not the Berdych kind but in the roof rafters.
Reckon Raonic will be Murray's pigeon for a while, injured or playing :)

While that is all true, imagine how Fed fans feel that the main rival for Novak for 2014-2015 was a 33-34 year old Fed

One truly dark day for tennis. Murray taints the No.1 ranking history for eternity. The ranking system HAS to be overhauled, there's no more excuses.

And both Raonic and Berdych had lead the h2h 3-1 and 6-4 respectively . They decided to turn pigeons

Really happy for him, would have been a shame if he didn't achieve this at some point in his career :)

Hope all english people are prepared to be blasted with prideful reports and constant comments hahaha ;)

Unlike germans who seem like they couldn't care less that Kerber is the #1 :-(

For all those saying it's truly a Big 4 I don't really see it that way yet, still 3 majors vs 12+. He's not had to beat a top 10 player in the last 4 tournaments and all 500 level or above.

Murray is clearly the best player of at minute though, great consistency. He's been beating anyone that lines up in front of him and he's now on top of the world. Didn't seem possible earlier this year, incredible how quick things change.

Murray has just followed the Djokovic theory...Stay the course, endure the losses and ride the tide, your time will eventually come.

It is hilarious that he didn't get to No 1 when he had won USO, Olympics and Wimbledon in 2012-13 , but he is now getting over 3000 points playing no top 10 players and getting to No 1

And all he had to do was just wait for the big 3 to wash out and hardly beat any time player. Why congratulate the MUG exactly? He hasn't even done anything other than beating Club Footed Penguin CrapoNic.

Its about as equally bad as Fed needing to AVOID Nadal to win tournaments.
