18 years old, incredible game, great inside out forehand, drop shots a lot, good lefty serve, 5'9, this guy proves you can be short and hit hard and win against all the 6'6 soft-hitters. Played Tsitsipas in Brest, crowd was going wild for a challenger final.

With the current technology and rules, a 5’9”can NEVER be the future of the game. The odds are that he won’t win a slam or a 1000 event. That’s just the reality of game.

another ball basher. this tennis future seems like wta 2.0 once the big 4 retire. yikes
Hi @FudgeMyn
does not look like a ball basher to me, but more the Jarkko Nieminen kind, probably the fact that is a southpaw. However, I do agree that he does not look to special, I hope for him that I am wrong.

he's 18 and he just won a challenger title against Tsitsipas and he's 155 in the world . . . That's pretty special.

As for technology dooming small players, it's probably the other way around. Technology means that small players won't have any power deficiency. Racket technology actually levels the playing field. Look at Diego Schwartzman, take Schwartzman's game and add a lefty serve and an attacking game and good touch and I think Moutet has a chance against all the slow, lumbering, soft-hitting giants

You have to be at least 6'3 to compete in the modern age. Look at Zverev ranked fourth and towering over even Federer and Nadal. This is a new era, and height is essential for power.

Moutet is lefty so that adds a couple inches on his serve. There are diminishing returns to height, especially if all of your opponents are also tall.

Height definitely not essentially for power, in fact I see little correlation. Height does give you a much bigger margin for error on serves and allows you to hit harder and safer. But Zev hasn't even figured that part of his game out yet. If anything he's succeeded in spite of his height, not because of it. He'll be better Later when he figures his serve out.

Nice delusional fanboy post.

What did that towering height get him in the slams last year. Jack sh*t. Got beaten by Coric again ffs.

6'1 is the height that is dominating the game right now, and has for the last few decades.

That's actually quite mistaken. The big 4 are taller than 6'1 on average, not to mention Cilic and Raonic who have both made slam finals. Both over 6'3, thank you. The reason Zverev didn't make a slam final in 2017 has nothing to do with his height but the fact that he kept winning big events outside the slams and getting exhausted. Did he win 6 events in total (including 2 masters)?

It all depends on whether he can hold serve. McEnroe was a lefty who managed to hold serve under 6 foot. I think Moutet can too but it's not going to be easy.

Where is the power? AZ, Khachanov, Tsitsipas (who has already lost to Moutet), Tomic, all of these guys are over 6'5 and don't have great power.

Guess the height that won slams in 2017.

Hint: Its not 6'3+.

He's winning under 60% of serve points, playing mostly mediocre opposition. One of the worst serve games of all the young'uns, rivaled by the dude he had a three-set thriller with last night.

OK but he is a lefty so his serve can improve. If he learns to swing it out wide in the ad court he can hold a lot of break points. Lefties develop later. Look at Muller and Lopez, both won tournaments last year in their mid-thirties after mediocre careers.

"Denis the Tennis" is good. Moutet wins return points at 32% vs. Denis 20%. That's a huge gap. It's easier for Moutet to improve his serve (he is going to get stronger) than it is for Denis to improve his entire return game.

What's your beef with French players?

They disappoint too much.

See: Tsonga 08 AO, Roland Garros semi 3 match points on Nole, Wimby semis and quarters choked.

Monfils: USO 16 Final. Other slam performances.

Gasquet: Made semis and no-showed as well.

Benneteau: Had Bercy wrapped up a few months ago. Full home crowd behind him. Nothing.

Paire: Wasted talent. Total headcase.

Pouille: Remains to be scene.

I said dominating the game right now and for the last few decades.

But we are discussing the supposed champion of THE FUTURE, this Moutet chap. The fact of the matter is this guy will struggle to win anything big because in the modern game, you have to be 6'3 or above.

Guess who just blew your golden boy off the court. He's 5'11.

2017 IS the modern game. 6'1 height won all 4 majors.

Oh and Coric owns Zverev and he's 6'1.

I've been watching more of his matchess and his serve has a lot of room for improvement. He mainly hits body serves. He really has no swing serve. He needs to come in more off his serve.

My take on Moutet.....the guy is an absolute jerk. Witness his match today. He threw his racquet down many times. He did a pathetic non-serve, for which he received a point penalty. And this is mild.

Having said that, the guy is definitely talented. He has great shots and he has great movement. But, he sucks in attitude.

It takes all kinds, so I welcome him into the pro circuit as I expect he will be a mainstay. I will be happy to cheer against him, while respecting his talent. If he doesn't make it into the top 100 by the end of 2018 I will eat my hat (begrudgingly).

Wins his first ATP match. OK it was a clay court match against a S&V player, but it was still a win. ATP win at 18 is a good sign. Young players can improve their hold percentage by 10% but nobody ever improves break % by 10%. Moutet can definitely get his hold percentage up to Donald Young levels with his lefty serve so that means he could get his ratio up to 110%. Headed to top 50 if he maintains his current path.

The world will discover Moutet’s lefty French flair against Marty Goffin on Suzanne Lenglen court tomorrow

68 kg each but Daveed for once will be the taller player (1.80m vs 1.75m) in this future classic matchup

This hasn't aged well has it haha, if you'd said Sinner, I'd have agreed, but not Moutet. He's probably not going to break top 50.

If he was an American he would be touted as the next big thing. But seriously, this guy can be top 50 !!

Future of tennis? Lol not even close. Sinner, Mussetti, Alcaraz, FAA, Rublev, Medvedev, Shapovalov and Tsitsipas have way more potential. Mouthy has no weapons whatsoever, other than being a lefty.
