Daniil Medvedev has been fined $9,000 (£7,400) for his antics during a straight sets win over Feliciano Lopez, in which he aimed a middle finger at fans, snatched a towel from a ball person and taunted the US Open crowd. Tournament organisers slapped the world No. 5 with a $5,000 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct and a further $4,000 for a visible obscenity, taking his total fines for this event up to $19,000 (£15,600).

The 23-year-old has been fined in each of his three matches at the final Grand Slam of the season, with previous offences for verbal abuse and racquet abuse. Umpire Damian Dumusois was unable to hand the Russian a code violation for his not-so-subtle swearing because he didn’t see it live, but he has been retrospectively fined after it was picked up by cameras in the stadium.

It's 9000 bucks well spent. He'll be more popular than ever before.

Players with character are sorely lacking. Most players cower and fold when being booed or disliked. He rose up like a man to fight the headless beast, that awful dumb beast called the Nu Yoyk crowd.

All hail the Bear!!!

The sport of tennis is really trying hard to attract a much younger viewing audience. The average age of tennis fans is 61-65 or so. And tennis is firmly lacking in viewership to NBA, NFL, UFC, etc when it comes to the 18-49 demographic. It's guys like Medvedev and Kyrgios who can help attract younger audiences. Controversey and drama is what sells.

BS. That’s only TV stats. Pay attention to the crowds during the matches.

I do pay attention to the crowds. They're all in their 60s and up. Look closely at Wimbledon crowds. Really old people.
In the lodges maybe. I was at RG this year and I’d say 75-80% of people are in 18-49 category you mentioned.

Other sports are popular with stars who aren't complete knobs

Ny crowds are trash. If they werent so money hungry they would kick out those drunks and dumbarse's who cannot get to their seats

Tennis has a serious problem of attracting younger audiences. That's a fact. And it's been said by tennis professionals and players themselves. The sport isn't attracting young audiences anywhere close to the level of other major sports.

As long as it isn't fake, it's great stuff.

But if the ATP starts staging things... like in wrestling...

Nah, old folk seem to have a lot of money at Wimbledon. They nab all the tickets in the rolling lottery. I'm gonna find the pic and post it here.

One pic won't prove anything. Didn't the pic I posted show that there are plenty of under 80s in the crowd?

Tennis is missing a Stone Cold Steve Austin type of player. A guy who simple gives zero effs and enjoys antagonizing the audience. That's what the sport needs. I hope Federer starts cursing more and Novak threatens to "find" all the fans who are booing him. And hopefully Nadal finally smashes a racquet. It needs to happen.

There can never be another Stone Cold Steve Austin anywhere.

I guess we could have a heel Bret Hitman Hart player then. A guy who feels the system is against him and he makes it known by yelling and cursing on court the way Bret was doing during the heigh of his feud with Austin.

That type of role could work.

The Med is taking over the US Open. I can't wait to see him vs Djokovic so we can reach a record level of decibels of boos for a single match. The highest in history. LOL

Who will get more boos? Hilarious NK gets more love here than Djokovic
