heres the real part of the interview that the person above didnt post. nice try dude, tryin to make it look like davydenko is bashing federer.

Q. What's the one thing that makes Roger Federer so tough?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Lucky. He's lucky sometimes. You know, like if he gets a chance in the third set, I think everybody see like I try winning by 5‑4 and double set point, okay, one returning bad. But play from baseline, you know, hitting like, like happening not first time against him already. Like happening Australian Open. I have set point and I hitting, play from baseline rally, and like try, you know, move him, and you know, make some little bit mistake like today. But by 5‑4, I was just try, you know, concentration like hundred percent. Just keep all my power, you know, winning third set. And then like I losing 5‑5, and I lose game and set.

Q. Is luck something just happens or is luck something that you make?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: I don't know. I think Federer's always lucky. Really, like some many points, like I was surprising how hitting. Like sometimes he make some great slice, you know, from cross. Because I try to push. Sometimes I try to make moving him like from right and left, and then just some points he just play like so good. You know, I don't understand how you can. You know, guys running right, left, you get not so great control from baseline. He just keeping balls back. But he like sometimes plays so well and then you losing points. You like surprising because you don't know how is possible. That's was okay, but, you know, he's play well. He try always to play very good, but, you know, today was windy. It's pretty tough to play very good from baseline.

davydenko does not speak very good english. he probably used the word "lucky" when he was trying to say that federer won the big points.

Let's see if he gots the treatment that Serena got when she clearly stated that Justine played better.

From what I've read of the serena interview, she didn't give many props to Justin - but then, she never does give props to her opponents. In Davydenko's case, since he's a non-English speaker, maybe he simply chose the wrong words to communicate what he wanted to say...

Davy's quotes need subtitles.

I don't believe Davy really believes Fed is lucky since Fed has beaten him 10 times out of 10. That is not luck. It is total domination.

Yup, Davy has so much more class than Serena. Remember he is not a native English speaker.

Yes, she stated that Justine played better in the second set than she did in the first. Look at her answer in the context of the question.

And as others have stated, Davy's not a native English speaker.

Man, he has terrible english. But it seems like he didn't really explain how Federer is "lucky", he just talked about how great Federer plays, as luck.

Perhaps this is best summed up in the words of golfer, Gary Player: "The harder I practice, the luckier I get."

Of course he won't get the same negative treatment as Serena did. Nor does he deserve it.
Firstly, as others have mentioned, and as is obvious, Davydenko's English is quite poor. By 'lucky', he could have meant that he likes Roger's haircut, for all we know.
Serena, by comparison, possesses a greater mastery of the English language.

Secondly, Davydenko doesn't have a long history of lacking respect for his opponents, whereas Serena certainly does have this lengthy reputation for bad sportsmanship.

Luck plays a part in success or lack thereof. Roger has had his share of good luck, Sampras did as well, while others like Tommy Haas have rotten luck with injuries and such. That doesn't make Fed any less great but it's nice to get a few lucky breaks now and then.

Yeah, OK. Federer has beaten Davydenko 10 times in a row and has never lost to him all because of "luck"? With that kind of luck, Federer should be winning the lottery every single day.

I'm sure his Russian is better than yours or mine. We Americans expect everyone to know English and as a general rule, we make zero effort to learn another language.

Davydenko is using the word "lucky" to describe how "unbelievable" Fed's tennis is. Even when Fed isn't playing very well, looking vulnerable, and getting himself into dicey situations where an opponent will think to himself "NOW I HAVE HIM HAHA", Fed manages to summon something incredible. Fed doesn't always hit a great shot, he might benefit from an opponent's error.

What Davy is trying to say is somehow Fed always wins. That's all. There is no doubt that he recognizes Fed to be the best.

In short Federer is able to suddenly up his level and surprise Davydenko. Some would say Federer's ability to do that is a sign of his brilliance while some like Davydenko think it's lucky how Federer can suddenly out of now where hit a few great shots that surprise him.

Davydenko has only a few words in the toolbox. Not his fault.

Of course, I do think he's a bit of a dumbass. Did anyone see Justin Gimelstob's US Open spot that he did for The Tonight Show? He's talking to Davydenko at one point, and Davydenko responds in Russian and asks why he has to talk to this loser tennis player. He didn't expect that they would translate that and put subtitles. Gimelstob is self-deprecating and found the humor in it afterwards, but Davydenko was being completely serious.

Haha so true. To agree with above posters, I think his bad english translates to what appears like him bashing Federer.

I don't think he feels Federer didn't deserve to win that match. Unike Serena who got owned and then proceeded to bash Henin.

Then men must be frustrated though. Some of them were playing their best tennis this Open and Federer wasn't looking his tops and he still marched through the field dropping only two sets.

It's completely unfair to call him a dumbass based on that Justin Gimelstob segment for the Tonight Show. You totally misunderstood what happened and you jumped on Davydenko for being stupid and not expecting them to translate what he "really said".

OF COURSE Davydenko knew what was happening - he actually was being a good guy and was playing along to help Gimelstob make a fun interview.

Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vq7H8l2KVOA. The segment with Davydenko starts at 4:57.

For those that don't speak Russian, here's what they actually said:

Gimelstob: "What are your suggestions for my next career?"
What Davydenko really says in Russian: "I think something in business might be good for you."
The (humorous, clearly fake) English translation shown in the subtitle: "Why should I care what you do?"

Then Davydenko says in Russian: "It's really great to know you and I hope we see each other around still in the future."
The (humorous, clearly fake) English translation shown in the subtitle: "You should have retired years ago."

Davydenko is obviously in on the joke and is playing along.

Davydenko is very low-key, so even the Russian press calls him "unknown", "inscrutable", "bland", etc. And it's compounded even more when he's constantly forced to give interviews in English when he speaks the language so poorly. But he's not a dumbass, and he definitely wasn't bad-mouthing Gimelstob.

Sounds like a frustrated guy who is just brushing-off a question he does really want to answer. Davy is 0-10, correct? He's either sick of thinking about how he keeps losing to Fed, and trying to get to next question...or he is mentally challenged. There are a ton of sports cliches I could rattle off right now, and I'm assuming Davy has heard them all, so I'm guessing he's just frustrated, and a little pissed about his record vs. Fed.

You know you need a luck in everything.

Talents and efforts are not enough. You also need some luck.

Especially for the kind of success like Federer's, God should want it that way.
