Del Potro again refuses to play DC for Argentiina

The bad blood between Del Potro and the Argentine Tennis Association (AAT) continues with a letter he has written to them detailing why he will continue to refrain from playing any DC ties for Argentina this year. He did not play any last year either.

Unhappy Del Potro says won't play Davis Cup this year:

i don't know all the details but i think he's right.

i never liked the way delpo was treated by his davis cup team (which is strange as he looks like a friendly fellow), blaming him for the 2008 loss, acting like he should jeopardize his entire career (which has already been seriously affected by injuries) for playing every davis cup tie, etc.

When you know the argentine mentality in sports, when you see how involved they are during DC matches, it may hurt that they still have to win one Davis Cup despite all the good players they had along the years. In 2008, really, everything was in their favor: a final in Argentina, they could choose the surface and Nadal couldn't play. They should have won that one. Yes, he should have given the DC finals the absolute priority that year. No doubt that the rest of the Argentines were and are still bitter about what happened: Del Potro played too many events the month before the final and let everyone down. He made a big mistake and he knows that. If he had won the Davis Cup, he would be a national hero now.

he could and did qualify for his first WTF by playing those matches... do they really expect him to withdraw from such a prestigious event ?
(who knew at the time if he could have another opportunity to play it again ?)
this is really asking too much...
... and he almost had 2 weeks of rest between the WTF and the DC final !

Interesting that he wrote this letter that apparently does not disclose any specific issues he has regarding the issue?

I understand that very well. He was having his breakthrough, it was not easy for him to make the DC finals a priority. But I'm sure that, retrospectively, he regrets it. It was a golden opportunity for his country, and he would have benefited from all that.

I think Argentina had a lot of internal troubles. If I recall correctly Gaudio didn't went along well with Nalbandian and Coria either, as both of them had saw themselves as the big deal.

Gaudio and Coria are old rivals, going back to when they were young kids. Nalbandian was Coria's friend, of course. Gaudio ironically got on well with Hewitt while Hewitt was at war with numerous Argentine players like Chela, Nalbandian, Coria and Acasuso. Del Potro is a long time admirer of Hewitt as well, I believe.

or maybe he doesn't care about being a "national hero", after all ?... ;)

the next stage for delpo would be to publicly state that the falklands are and should be british. :)

He certainly wouldn't if he ever said something like below!

He'd have to come here and play for us if he ever did that. He'd be very welcome. We desperately need another top player to help take the pressure off Andy!

The only thing I would worry about is their tendency to argue during changeovers when they're on the same court together! ;)

I don't think that Del Potro lives for that either. At the same time, I saw how sad he was after the 2011 final, he was in tears, so I guess giving a DC title to his country means something to him.

LOL. Better live abroad after that. :)
