I started that way...
The final of the ‘09 US Open was the very first match I watched after deciding to become a fed fan, a FNG I know.
Anyway, I was NOT much for Delpo based solely on the fact that he ‘took’ what I believed to be rightfully Rogers’.
Turns out that ‘ol JM got exactly what he deserved that day, the win.
After coming to grips with that it was very easy to like the guy.

I do (however) have a sneaking suspicion that right before he gives an interview, he chugs a glass of egg nog then purposefully forgets to clear his throat...

I like Delpo overall, but I agree with this. I don't think he's a total knob, like Connors style, but I wouldn't exactly call him a class act. The sooner more people get past that idea the better off we'll all be.

I'm not big on him bringing up family members either. Temper tantrums against the chair or whatever else are one thing, but you just never know about a guy's mother. She could be dying of cancer. That's why it's a no-no for me.

I think people like Del Potro since:

-He is a really nice guy, maybe the nicest guy on tour.
-He has an unabashed humility combined with confidence.
-He plays an exciting style of tennis that is fun to watch, more fun for some than say Murray or Cilic who might be (definitely is in Murray's case) "better" players
-He was the first to beat Federer and Nadal back to back to win a slam, a truly impressive feat, and at a young age.
-He is practically the only truly dangerous second tier player, the one who can beat any of the biggest guns at any time, a sharp contrast to say Berdych.
-There is a lot of sympathy and underdog rooting for him with the super bad luck he has had in his career with injuries and such.

I doubt it. It will be the same old story if he reaches the final, imo. He'll beat several opponents in a row in long matches and then be gassed for the final, the patterns we've already seen at the 2013 Indian Wells or the 2016 Olympics.

The flip side: he barely got out of the last match after being one set down and had to play a clutch TB in the second to get to the 3rd.

I'm a BIG fan of Delpo, but he still has a long way to go. He has some attackable weaknesses, one of which is his absolute reluctance to hit a BH down the line, and that makes it harder to reset points so that he doesn't have to continue hitting one BH after another. He can get trapped into patterns. His serve is also a bit weak for a man his height.

Usually Federer but if they meet here I might have to go with Del Potro. If I'm being brutally honest I don't think I've ever rooted for Del Potro in a major vs Fed. Mainly because Delpo is basically a draw spoiler more than anything. I don't think he has the fitness and game combined to win 7 Bo5 matches in a row anymore.

A guy can be nice and lose his temper though like I said earlier in the thread. I would call Federer/Nadal/Djokovic very humble and gracious in defeat for example but even they have had their outbursts and gotten mad at opponents. It's just human nature really.

Of course they did. That doesn't surprise me at all, but I think being a fan is a totally different perspective. It's more about judging the actions of the players against your own standards. I don't know if that makes sense. Some people let stuff go that others don't, basically.

And the root of the problem for me is that it's happened twice. In all honesty, I'd probably be excusing him if the Murray incident at 19 was the only one because I do agree that stupid stuff gets said at 19, but the second one from when he was mid 20's is the one I don't like.

I think it might be more of a cultural thing - when it comes to using epithets and insults, in some regions of the world they tend to be familial in nature. It's perfectly ok to dislike it of course.

Del Potro is not a saint, of course, I have always known that, but He's not that bad as many pretend and ironically, many are fans of Murray, Nadal, Djokovic and Federer who aren't saints either.

What about the story Blake told recently, where Delpo hung around after his last match just to go congratulate him. Was Blake lying?

Are all the other people who talk about him being a good guy lying?

Is everyone who says any of these top players are basically good guys lying? Just because they don't walk on water and aren't perfect at every moment of every day?

Pretty high standard here...

In my experiences in life, the good guys tend to get more mad when they actually do get mad. Think it's just the way things work IMO. Maybe good guys feel more crossed when whomever they are dealing with don't practice the same ethics/morals.

Well, maybe that 's what some people like but that's not all too like. And it's not just that list you mention. It's hard to move well when you're that big and that kind of nimbleness gets kudos from me too, in addition to how hard he worked not only to get his health back but to get his STRATEGY back. That's a really big deal.
