Did Federer have Mono at 2007 Wimbledon?

Some people say Nadal beat Federer at 2008 Wimbledon because Federer had Mono. 2007 Wimbledon was very similar (just shorter) and Nadal had Federer in a very tricky position in the 5th set. So if 2007 and 2008 were virtually the same match, then does that mean Federer had Mono at both? Also 2006 Wimbledon? Because Nadal was age 20 and had hardly any Wimbledon matches under his belt coming into 2006, and yet he took a set and lost a tie-breaker in another set vs Federer. Seems unthinkable.

Considering that Fed took a set off Nadal at the FO way way back, maybe Nadal already had twinges in his back in 2005 or 2006 ???

Eh, dear OP ?? :D

Fed first discerned its symptoms at AO 08 but was not diagnosed till afterwards.

He displays no signs of drug usage, I should add in passing.

I believe his doctor said that Roger got Mono in Nov/Dec '07.

The legend has it, that the lingering effects carry on to this day. Oh poor Rogi

Fed's mono affected him but he didn't lose due to it, he lost cause the painful FO loss was still on his mind and his confidence was never the same ever since, espeically against Nadal. Fed did try to make a match out of it and fought to get 2 sets and take it to a competitive 5th but the end result was inevitable.

Nadal is also a very tough matchup for Fed, probably the toughest one could think of. And yet, Federer is a much superior grass player, as proven by 7 Wimbledon titles and consistent results where Nadal keeps losing at 2nd and 1st rounds.

Nadal is a tough match-up for Berdych too, as Nadal has won their last 16 meetings. Nadal is a tough match-up for Wawrinka too, as Nadal has won 12 of their 13 meetings. Federer has a better record vs Nadal, than nearly everyone else in the top 10. Only Djokovic has a better record vs Nadal. And even so, Djokovic has only won 3 of 11 meetings with Nadal at the slams.

Federer has lost in the 1st Round of Wimbledon 3 times.
Federer has also lost in the 1st Round of Roland Garros 3 times.

Whereas Nadal has only lost in the 1st Round of Wimbledon, once.

7 Wimbledons, bro. The holy grail of tennis. Something Nadal wouldn't touch 7 times if he had 3 lifes.

This. I always said Federer would have won Wimbledon 2008 (and AO 2009) had he lost to Monfils in the RG semi. The mono "just" made him lose AO 2008 and played havok with his clay preparation. He got to the RG final just on his--what does the ************* say? Oh yes--"sheer greatness", but the trouncing he got caused his Wimbledon loss, which then caused his AO 2009 loss. This was purely a mental snowballing effect.

On the other hand, it's also quite possible that these two losses gave him the grit to hang on and win the title in RG 2009. That's why trying to rewrite history is ultimately a futile effort. ;)

And those early losses were in Nadal's prime. Context matters.

It was not mono. But it was purely mental. Federer for some reason played like crap vs Rafa at RG and that destroyed his confidence. Still Nadal needed 5 grueling sets to put him away at W while he bent over for Novak in their 2011 final

Not really interested, tbh. Fed has 7 Wimbledons and Nadal has 2, and that's about all you need to know about their grass court games.

So, clearly, Nadal is the superior grass player. They just need to completely remove the grass and he will cement his place in history as the all-surface-GOAT.

You know what I with this board had more of? Federer and/or Nadal threads.

It just doesn't have enough.

What was this board like before Fed/Nadal? I guess it probably didn't exist or most of the posters didn't exist since it's been over 10 years since Federer won Wimbledon #1
