Djokovic AO 13 SF or Federer AO 07 SF, what do you think?

Who was better?

  • Djokovic

  • Federer

  • Too tough to call because the level was too similar

  • Too tough to call because of different match-ups/playing conditions

Having given a thorough rewatch to both, yesterday and today respectively, I wanted to compare these 2 performances. Which one do you think was better?

My breakdown by sets and by game components (serve, baseline, return, etc)

Set 1: Federer started a bit shaky, got the early break, but gifted it straight back with a terrible game, cleaned up his play in the last 3 games of the set. Didn't display any peak tennis or close to it, so I would rate it around 8.5/10

Djokovic with average returning in the first 2 return games. Upped his game a lot and played straight up brilliant to win 5 games in a row from 1-2 to 6-2
9.5/10

Set 2: Federer serving very poorly, but playing a clean set and hitting miraculous passing shots. His best offensive tennis was yet to come in set 3. Roddick pure garbage to justify the bagel, charging the net like a headless chicken.
9.5/10

Djokovic continuing with the same peak baseline intensity as set 1. Made 4 UE to give Ferrer the 2nd game at 5-1. Only made 3 UE in the other 7 games combined. Ferrer with subpar intensity, inconsistent and somewhat vulnerable from the BH side.
9.5/10

Set 3: both GOATing, not much to say. They were just going full balistic with their groundstrokes and Federer had a bit of variety thrown in there.
Both 9.75/10

Another breakdown:

Serve: Federer clearly better in set 1, Djokovic clearly better in set 2, Djokovic slightly better in set 3, so Djokovic marginally.

Baseline game: Djokovic set 1 and 2, about the same in set 3, so Djokovic overall

Returning: Federer; he was getting good reads on serve against a much better server vs Djoko who seemed to be a bit thrown off by the ball skidding off the court;
Djoko returned well, but Federer better

Movement: both great, just different types of movement; Federer with somewhat better footwork and better anticipation.

Federer's anticipation to set up some of his passing shots was outstanding.

Other categories: Federer for passing shots and solid hands at the net; the Djoko-Ferrer match was a pure baseline one, so not much to add here

Roddick a bit better of an opponent purely due to his serve, otherwise both had bad opponents on the day.

In the end I would take Djokovic for having no dip/stretch where he played below peak, but I would gladly hear some other opinions/breakdowns on this one.

Djokovic would probably get triple bageled. I mean look at what Fed did to Roddick in the final, and we know Roddick owns Djokovic.

Djokovic really embarrassed Roddick in their last match though.

Both were in superhuman form. I'm fairly sure I've made a similar thread before, because it's so close. Federer was using Roddick as target practice for passing shots, while Djokovic was ripping away from the baseline.

I think Ferrer was a bit better than Roddick in their respective matches though. And Roddick usually puts up a much tougher fight than Ferrer so that says a lot about how poorly he played in the SF.

Yeah, I mean Fed was on fire and all, but even while watching the highlights I was facepalming at Roddick's approaches.

You know what they say: crazy means doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

It's amazing that Djokovic even playing at that level against a geriatric Federer still gave up a set. Peak Fed would bury him.
In your delusion sure...but in reality we saw how that match up at AO and Wimbledon turned out 7-2 combined in Djoe's favor

Roddick was more up and down as expected. Put up a better fight in set 1, but played terrible in set 2.

I considered he had his serve, which would make the scoreline a bit tighter against Djoko, who objectively returned worse on the day, but with his serve neutralized, Roddick was really bad that day.

Ferrer was kinda sluggish chasing shots toward his BH and his reactions also looked slow for a guy who relies on his speed/coverage. Effects of the Almagro match.

Both between 9.5 and 10 depending on how harsh you scale. I would probably pick Djokovic as well probably 10 to 9.5.

Very hard to pick between two , I might aligned toward Fed little if it is semi or qf( Novak never lossed semi in AO even then) but I think if it is a AO final then Novak will win in hard fought five set match

Federer by a bit because of how he neutralized Roddick's serve/anticipation was uncanny in general. But both were damn good.

Other way around IMO. Both were bad, but Roddick was a little less worse than Ferrer was. Federer just neutralized his serve way too well that day.
