Having given a thorough rewatch to both, yesterday and today respectively, I wanted to compare these 2 performances. Which one do you think was better?
My breakdown by sets and by game components (serve, baseline, return, etc)
Set 1: Federer started a bit shaky, got the early break, but gifted it straight back with a terrible game, cleaned up his play in the last 3 games of the set. Didn't display any peak tennis or close to it, so I would rate it around 8.5/10
Djokovic with average returning in the first 2 return games. Upped his game a lot and played straight up brilliant to win 5 games in a row from 1-2 to 6-2
9.5/10
Set 2: Federer serving very poorly, but playing a clean set and hitting miraculous passing shots. His best offensive tennis was yet to come in set 3. Roddick pure garbage to justify the bagel, charging the net like a headless chicken.
9.5/10
Djokovic continuing with the same peak baseline intensity as set 1. Made 4 UE to give Ferrer the 2nd game at 5-1. Only made 3 UE in the other 7 games combined. Ferrer with subpar intensity, inconsistent and somewhat vulnerable from the BH side.
9.5/10
Set 3: both GOATing, not much to say. They were just going full balistic with their groundstrokes and Federer had a bit of variety thrown in there.
Both 9.75/10
Another breakdown:
Serve: Federer clearly better in set 1, Djokovic clearly better in set 2, Djokovic slightly better in set 3, so Djokovic marginally.
Baseline game: Djokovic set 1 and 2, about the same in set 3, so Djokovic overall
Returning: Federer; he was getting good reads on serve against a much better server vs Djoko who seemed to be a bit thrown off by the ball skidding off the court;
Djoko returned well, but Federer better
Movement: both great, just different types of movement; Federer with somewhat better footwork and better anticipation.
Federer's anticipation to set up some of his passing shots was outstanding.
Other categories: Federer for passing shots and solid hands at the net; the Djoko-Ferrer match was a pure baseline one, so not much to add here
Roddick a bit better of an opponent purely due to his serve, otherwise both had bad opponents on the day.
In the end I would take Djokovic for having no dip/stretch where he played below peak, but I would gladly hear some other opinions/breakdowns on this one.
