Djokovic calls ATP finals pinnacle of the season

in my experience most casual fans can't differentiate between any of the tournaments, slams included, with the exception of Wimbledon. Almost no one I play tennis with on a semi regular basis (a pretty large group, possibly 80 people or so) could tell, when asked, the difference between the French Open and the Italian Open. I think we forget sometimes how much of a tennis nerd bubble TTW is.
Anyone who is daft enough to not know the difference between Rome and FO clearly knows nothing about tennis or is in denial lol.

that seems to be the preferred sport of Nadal devotees, cheating the readers.
yesterday and today another Nadal devotee claimed that there is a new language: Swiss German.

I live in Germany. Swiss German is a language. It's called Schwiezer Dütsch, which means exactly Swiss German. It's basically German with swiss accent, but it's tough to understand for Germans. One example for Swiss German is Federer's famous scream "Chum Jetze", which is Swiss German for "Komm jetzt", which means "Come on" in English (actually "jetzt" means "now", but in that context "Komm jetzt" is "Come on").

Would that make it merely a dialect of German, then?

Well, that probably depends on the definition of language and dialect. I'd say you could call it a language, since many words are completely different from German and it's basically impossible to understand if Swiss German is spoken at normal speed.

Maybe it's technically a dialect, but I suppose blablavla was trying to say Swiss German doesn't exist, and that is definitely wrong.

There's no one I've played tennis with who hasn't heard of the 4 Grand Slams. Who are these 80 people you play tennis with? Memory loss patients?

Agreed. It's sad they got rid of BO5, feel like the last match of the season should be BO5. Now even Davis Cup has been watered down.
Spot on, on both fronts.

Firstly Davis Cup needs to switch back to its old format. All year round we're used to watching the big stars play against each other. Davis Cup didn't have that in recent years, but it did have really uniquely fun matches. For example Cilic vs Del Potro with the amazing home atmosphere was mesmerising. Not everything should be about big 3.

And I also think they should make WTF final BO5. To do that they'd have to give a day gap between the semis and the final, so perhaps have it on a Monday evening.

If WTF is being played in the summer then it's pinnacle of the season. Season finale tournament is the necessarily the indicator of who you are as a tennis player where it needs to be a right circumstance of prestige tournament. It would be unique if that tournament offer all 3 surface where a said player would get its choice of surface that can come in the stadium at a moment notice like Arizona Cardinal's home stadium where they put the field for the game day. Imagine clay coming in for afternoon session then grass court in the night session and leave the court outside and you could use hard court to your advantage. But again if the WTF is being held in November, it loses it's luster for the sport as whole.

Yes, but did they lose an official match en route to their Slams?
This doesn't necessarily mean it's a meme event.
In the two biggest events in football, the World Cup and Champions League, teams can lose a match in the group stage and still win the tournament overall.

I didn’t say they hadn‘t heard of them. I said they didn’t know the difference between the tournaments. Most people don‘t care enough about this.

But they've heard of the Italian Open? I hadn't even heard of the Italian Open, I had to look it up and saw it was the Rome Masters 1000.
All tennis fans know about the Grand Slams, and the fact they're the most important. Everyone who has heard of Nadal knows about the French Open.

Most people don’t follow tennis closely enough to know the difference between the tournaments. That’s something left for tennis nerds at places like TTW.

That's not my experience at all. Literally everyone I know who either plays or follows tennis even a bit knows about Grand Slams specifically.

Federer on Twitter wrote Nadal a congratulations for equalling his 20 Grand Slams and it got 600K likes. I don't think these people were confused as to what he was referring to.

I wouldn’t rely on Twitter likes to measure how many people can tell you which are the most important tennis tournaments and why

It is a good barometer of tennis fans outside the nerd bubble of TTW though.
I've never met a single person who follows or plays tennis and hasn't heard of Grand Slams specifically. Apparently you play tennis with 80 people, and none of them have heard of Grand Slams.
I'm sorry, I just don't believe your anecdote. It seems absurd, and I think it's just mental gymnastics because Nadal equalled the Grand Slam record.

You seem to not have read what I wrote. Let’s leave it at that

I like your display pic. That was the funniest moment from the whole Axios interview.
lol thanks. The entire meme format is even funnier than just the one image (especially the one with five frames instead of three):

That graph bit was great.
I still go back on YouTube and rewatch this scene too:

"Some people say that you shouldn't test"
"Who says that"
"Read the manuals... uh... read the books"
*Jonathan Swain confused face*
"What manuals? What books?"

So so funny.

Yes, it is the pinnacle of ATP tournaments.
Nothing weird about that.
Why should there be controversy about this?

If you live in Germany, then you probably know that German language spoke say in Berlin is quite different from German language spoken in Bavaria.
Would those two be separate languages?

And you probably know that Swiss German is not 1 formal language, but a bunch of dialects.
So a person from Zurich might have issues understanding another person from Sankt Gallen or Basel.
Would those be 3 different languages as well?

Or would those all be dialects of "Hochdeutsch"?

The context of the discussion which brought the whole issue up was whether Federer should get credit for learning Hochdeutsch as a foreign language, i.e. whether Schwiezer Dütsch and Hochdeutsch schould be considered separate languages for him. It's next to impossible to grow up in a German-speaking part of Switzerland and not learn Hochdeutsch, unless one's OK with staying illiterate. No credit for Federer there, it was just a small extension of his mother tongue, or to be precise his father tongue.

Atp season.
Where did you mention the "ATP season"?

As you can see, many posters understood your title as Novak being salty and depreciating the value of slams and proceeded to comment in that direction. In that sense it worked as a bait, even if you did it unintentionally.

In my case it was a "bait" only in the sense that I wanted to attract people so we could discuss a serious issue. No reason to go easier on yourself then you went on me.

Nope. Essentially an event to satisfy the corporates. Reason? You can lose but win.
As I said numerous times, some of you, Nadal's fans, are not open minded in the sense that you can't deal with the fact that there is a tournament in a different format. No wonder you don't like variety in tennis ;)

The format is daft. It should be straight knockout of top 16 seeds. Also having it on hard court robs it of imoortance as we already have 2 Majors on hard. Should be alternated between grass and clay and held in a different location every year.
The format is clearly designed to ensure a minimum 3 games for the most marketable players.

You're posting in the wrong thread, there's already one named "Which tennis event occasions the most salt?"

If we go only by TTW it's WTF by a landslide. VB's allergic reaction to it is far stronger than anything we can compare it to. Just sayin'
Not seen anyone call for hard courts indoors to be erased. Clay oth has caused so much salt people actually want clay erased. So you are incorrect on this. It is FO all day long. For some FO is very sweet admittedly. Sweet and sour i guess.

He only tries to look salty. And he is doing good. He is not a Nadal fan by any mean, just a Nadal hater going for too much.
Nah, I don't think so, he is too consistent in his BS in order for it to be fake. What you base your assessment on?

Anyways, back to the actual topic of this thread, glad we can agree to disagree.
Glad you agree its been a fantastic year for Nadal. I agree with you. It has. Hope you enjoyed the last two slams as was a fantastic diversion from the pandemic.

Just stupid minorities among Fed and Rafa fans are under/overrating the clay, that's your niche fight. In the case of WTF much higher percentage of VB exudes salt. VB is big so it's a lot of salt.

I enjoy all tennis. Tennis for me isn't about whether a certain player wins or not. :)

Anyways, this topic is about the ATP finals....care to stick to the actual topic? Thanks.

Again incorrect. There is a major on clay. So to want clay erased is ultimate salt. Not even a debate here.

Ultimate salt yes, but by ultimately stupid ultimate minority. So that's very little salt as the end result.

Really? So as i said we agree its been a great year and will be remembered for Nadal making his20ry. It is nice we are in agreement and thank you for confirming you enjoyed the last two slams it is nice to see people still having fun given the ongoing pandemic. Not long to wait until AO. In meantime have a great festive break.
