Even if that's the case I still feel he's making a mistake. He has a huge amount of points to defend in Madrid/Rome/RG and so IMO the more rest he affords himself the better it will be for him, not only during the clay season but also the rest of the year.
Maybe he really wants that #1 ranking back?

And clean shoes. Not to be forgot. Its more important to have clean shoes as otherwise he runs risk of taking the Fed forehand at full speed. Needs a really firm ground to absorb the impact and dirty shoes are gonna make it slippery and less efficient.

Bogdan Obradovic Serbian Davis Cup team Coach said in the interview for Spain newspapers (which was translated and publish in Serbian newspapers as well) that Novak finally started to eat meat. He blamed his vegan diet and influence of Pepe for his bad form this year. He said that even little changes in tennis, like changing your racket can affect your game drastically and that Novak changed his whole routine and diet and that affected him badly. He also said that Novak was more meditating then practicing and that he is his own enemy, he added that he has nothing against meditation but that you also have to go to practice and hit the ball million times as well.
He said that he had a problems with pepe because of Novaks diet but he didn't elaborate more on that. He mention that Michael Phelps loves to eat his grandmas food and after he sets Worlds records.
They asked him what kind of relationship he has with Novak - and he answered that Uncle Tony asked him exactly the same question, then he continued to say that he created conflict with Novak in the hope to wake him up. He said that Novak knows that he loves him and he want the best for him. He also told Novak that there is no tennis court or locker room in this world that he can hide from him. he said that he will always tell Novak exactly what he thinks and will not pretend.
They asked him what he thinks about Novak saying that he wants to spend more time with his family now, he said that Federer also has family and he is still able to produce top level tennis so that Novak should find balance. On the end hi said that Novak got off the path he was on and now he is lost in the forest
