Djokovic two matches away from the double Golden Masters

Who knows, it's all speculation...remember, the guy has lost five finals in Miami, so I wouldn't be surprised if number 6 was waiting for him either.

Not really sure why Barcelona 2010 was a mistake...the only time he won all three masters on clay was when he skipped Barcelona.
Nadal never winning Miami is kinda sad. In both 2005 and 2011 he was 2 points away against very strong opponents. Faced a GOATing Davydenko in 2008. Played a bad final in 2014 and an absolutely terrible final in 2017...Oh, and also missed a great chance in 2010.

Nadal winning all 3 masters had nothing to do with him skipping Barcelona. The competition wasn't exactly very strong that year. It's not like in 2009 when he had to work very hard for every title.

Fair enough.

It would be fitting. Novak is easily the greatest Masters 1000 player ever imo.

He really helped raise the bar for what is expected of top pros. Seemed like he brought his full effort to all 9 events from March to October every year. While past champions seemed to use them more as slam warm-ups.

Yeah. Agassi actually skipped like 50 Masters over his career. Even Fed tanked (and occasionally skipped) plenty back in the good ol' weak era days (jk). I think Novak (and Rafa) helped bring greater legitimacy to the Masters.

Nadal only cares about clay masters, much less about others. Djokovic is the only player who wants to win everything at all cost.

He has short time to rest for USO. It starts next week right?

USO has to be the #1 priority. Ideal would be if he could ease his way to the title but I have a feeling Agut will be annoying as he always is. Obviously it's great Djokovic prepares physically for USO and he had to play something before the tournament but he cannot overextend. So far he has done well.

You never tried, so we don't know how would it go.

Though I believe it is too late to become a Nadal fan now.

I actually saw Rafa play live at USO back in 2003 on his first visit there, and was a bonafide Rafa fan until 2005, when he started to change his game to become more clay centric and more defensive orientated. I was a fan of the younger more aggressive Rafa, and thought he was going to be reaching double digit slams on hard courts, not clay...that is how much to me anyway, his game changed from what I remember. I didn't like that he changed his style that much, what you saw at USO 2010 from him...I kind of saw him being that way throughout his whole career because I saw that in him when I was first saw him, he just went in another direction. Now, I am not saying what he did was wrong, he became the clay GOAT, but I think he could have been the HC GOAT had he stayed on the path I thought he was heading on. Who knows.

Have a soft spot for Rafa though, since I will always remember the feelings I had watching him live and knowing then he was going to be something special, so seeing him do what he has done, kind of validates my own initial feelings about him...as in, I was right about him when I saw him. And of course, what a legend this guy is.

USO starts Monday, but Novak can request a late start, possibly even a Wednesday start, it has happened before at the USO.

I never got why people call it the “Golden Masters”. Don’t you kinda need a Gold medal to make it a Golden Masters  It should just be called the "Career Masters".

It's a little strange yes. The only reason I can think of why it's called that (besides the catchy media created title) is because the Masters and below are colour coded for lack of a better word. Remember when the ATP site used to highlight the scores on the top of the screen? The M1000's were gold, the 500's were silver, and the 250's were black.

What’s the story on this? Only joined early 2019.

She was on Novaks butt about failing in majors (the time when Novak was losing lots of finals) and that he mostly just majored in events outside the slams (like masters, according to her a crap event as it isn't an #ITFsanctionedevent, she was known for spamming hastags all the time lol). Only ITF sanctioned events are what matters. Wich is mostly true, but that wasn't the issue. She was making fun of Novak alot for his failures in major finals. Novak has now went on to win 17 majors. How ironic.

Seems like TTW had lots of good trolls back then. Between her, 90’s Clay, 5555, the rabid Nadal fans, and others, it must have been quite a show.

It would be an amazing achievement but sadly I don't think it'll happen. Whenever something seems too good to be true there's usually someone or something that throws a spanner in the works for him.

Tobey Maguire is the best spidey. Will fight anyone who says otherwise

I’m not up on rating everybody who ever played Spider-Man because I haven’t seen every movie, saw the original 3 and then when Garfield played Spidey in the Amazing movies.

But I never liked Maguire. He overplayed the nerdy Peter Parker to the extreme IMO. I know he’s supposed to be nerdy but some of the scenes in the original movies are way too cheesy for me. :p

I know Cincinnati is the only M1000 he only won once (2018)
If I'm not mistaken, he has 5 IW, 6 Miami, 2 MC, 3 Madrid, 4 Rome, 4 Canada, 1 Cincinnati, 5 Shanghai and 5 Bercy. He is already the only player tha won the 4 GS, the ATP finals and the 9 M1000. If he wins Cincinnati, all he'll need is a 2nd French Open and he'll have won every big tournaments twice.

Nadal has never won Miami (despite 5 finals) and Bercy but more importantly, he has never won the ATP finals. That's a HUGE hole in his career, IMO. Federer never won MC and Rome he will (almost) certainly never win them.

Djokovic winning Cincinnati would also get him 640 additional points and would almost assure him the #1 at the end of the year. (He can win massive points at the USO and the ATP finals) I can see why he is taking this tournament so seriously.

Djokovic also missed the chance to win 6 masters for a second time, technically would have been his first, by withdrawining from MC 2011.
He also skipped Madrid in 2015, so it could have been 7 that year.

Even more impressive, apart from this Madrid tournament where he didn’t play, he reached EVERY big final (Slam, Masters, WTF) between Paris Indoor 2014 and Miami 2016.

He lost in the SF to Federer in Shanghai 2014 and lost to Vesely in the opening match of Monte Carlo 2016.

So he reached 18 (!) big finals in a row when he entered, winning 15 of them (losses to Wawrinka at RG, Murray at Montreal and Federer at Cincinnati).

As a Federer fan I admit that this is a stat similar impressive to 18/19 consecutive Slam finals.

Oh, he does. The only player who doesn't care too much about records is Nadal. (which is why he isn't playing right now)

Thats actually ROFL worthy. Lets see his stand on FO later this year. It is but obvious that he wants to concentrate every bit on FO to avoid any slip in his quest for #20.

At the start of the 2011 season when he first transformed into Djokovic 2.0 he held only 5 Masters titles, 1 less than Murray!

Here comes Murray again :-D Such weak attempt to compare the two when the fact was that Nole already had won his first slam sometime back before 2011.

Many people thought Murray would be the one who would go on to have the better career from 2007-2010

Novak had a bit of a slump after winning AO in 08

I assume you're being sarcastic

These guys care about the records. Every elite player is all about their stats. Even Humbalito.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see Joe Cavitch fall short of this goal. It's always when players are on the cusp of something great that they tend to falter.

In regards to the OP, last year he was two matches away also, then lost in the semis...so we've been here before. If he gets it, great, but I'm not too bothered personally myself, I just don't want him to overextend himself if he gets into that sort of situation...it is a masters, yes, a chance for a double career masters, but it still pales in comparison to slam number 18.
Agree, but seems he is cruising easily through Cincinnati. SF could be grueling but I have feeling it won't be. F against Raonic would be nice, but Tsi in final is ok too considering energy waste...

It's after all practically season start, and my personal opinion, being fresh is one if main reasons Novak is successful at AO...

After USO he can take easy Rome and give all of him at RG... And that's it, rest of season is not that important if he do good before...

Federer never even won 5 masters in a year though. But of course if he had Djokovic's 2015-2016 clay competition during his prime he would have won a lot more on clay.

Nadal missed a chance to win 6 masters in 2013 by withdrawing from Miami.
Off course, off course he would... :-D

All his fans know that fact...
He loves and respects fans, opponents an this holly game too much, remember? We had threads and threads where Fed fans claimed this :-D

If we don't count traveling to his huge, luxurious, shameful, disgraceful to other poor players property...

She dissapeared as soon as Novak won few slams in a row... One of best karma thing that happen here... Now Novak is known for majoring at majors...
