There is a good reason why Fed won’t touch clay now. He is listening to his fitness guru Pierre Paganini:

Post knee surgery Fed will not risk destabilising his knee by playing on the clay because he would need to slide into shots on the surface. Let’s not forget Pierre has been Roger’s fitness trainer from the very beginning and Roger has even paid him not to disclose the secrets of their training until Roger has retired. This is the guy he listens to and respects most regarding his physical conditioning and has contributed to Roger’s longevity at the very highest level.
Taking Pierre’s comments and Roger’s schedule of skipping clay in this year and last year we can safely conclude we will never see him play on clay or RG for the rest of his career. Roger’s even said he knows his knee will never be the same post surgery.
So please no more threads on he is doing it to avoid Nadal or scared of him etc, he should play it because it is bad for an ATG to skip a Grand Slam, he should play to win RG a second time round etc, etc. He’s doing it because he does not want to risk injuring his knee and only has a few more years of his career left; specifically it is a risk for Roger’s circumstances; not anyone else’s.
Any more threads on this issue are clearly trolling because they are bored and want to get a reaction from posters and do not or don’t want to understand why he will never play on clay again.
The advantage when you play on clay for the joints is that there is less shock because there is the slide, and the disadvantage of [playing on] hard courts is that shock,' he said. 'But the advantage on hard courts is that the shock is brief. In contrast, the disadvantage with the slide on clay is that there is a lot of vibration in the joints. We don’t see it from the outside, but to control this slide there is instability in the knee, the foot, the ankle. And that in some cases can be bad for the knee or joint in question.'
