Federer's forehand is NOT a very good shot anymore

It doesn't seem like people have truly gotten the memo on Federer's forehand.

Federer was thoroughly dominated in forehand exchanges by Djokovic. Federer simply could not dictate with his forehand at all, whereas Djokovic could with his. Federer's biggest weakness is his running forehand - hit it a foot to his right and he's playing defense. When Federer redirects the ball up the line with his backhand, it goes into Djokovic's running forehand, which spells trouble for Federer as that means Federer has to cover a cross court forehand and he's recovering from his backhand side.

It's not only Djokovic. Go back and watch the Wimbledon QF last year between Federer and Wawrinka and Wawrinka was DESTROYING Federer in FH exchanges. It was just man-to-man domination...as though Federer was some qualifier trying to hang with the big boys.

His inside-out forehand looks forced and overly wristy/mechanical. He so often tries to hit it, but it so often looks like he's struggling with all his might just to avoid an error, rather than trying to actually take control of the point. There used to be a time when hitting to Federer's backhand was worthless for most of the tour because he'd just run around it and crush a forehand.

This is the guy who is ranked #2 in the world now. I think we can rest the "weak era" BS.

Dude, Federer and Djokovic just played the best match of the year. He was getting over powered by Djokovic's forehand but its not the first time that has happened to Fed on clay.

Also clearly you know more about technique and shot quality than the most successful player ever, who is at this very moment ranked number 2 by a large margin, at 33 years old.

In any case his FH along with the rest of his game was enough to get him to the final of the tournament that has had the highest level of play for the year.

I still think its a very good shot but its not as consistent or lethal as it once was. Before if you went into that side slightly short it was gone no question now there always seems to be a lot more doubting that shot. I think his backhand is just as good as it was in his prime but his forehand has definitely declined. I think the reason is greatly down to the movement and agility he has lost with age. Before he would have no problem jumping around his backhand leaping into the forehand but now he seems to struggle to get around it as quick which affects the trajectory of the shot and put him out of position a lot of the time.

Djokovic has the least-error prone forehand I have ever seen. It's great and always hit with measure. Of course Federer's has declined - he's getting older, fact. But he is number 2 in the world - it's still a damn good forehand, though Djokovic's is certainly more reliable.

His forehand is a far cry from what it used to be, that much is sure.
yep. and it was pretty poor all week in Rome, whereas the backhand looked strong. But it's the forehand that's supposed to do the damage. Right now, it ain't and hasn't been doing enough for some time now

He hit the forehand well in Shanghai, Basel and Dubai. But other than that it's been underwhelming, he's afraid to be aggressive with it against the best movers on anything other than a quick court.

true with Dubai and Shanghai, didn't catch much of Basel, but I trust your opinion on that. But he can't reserve it for the handful of tournaments he plays on fast courts...

This^. It used to be almost violent--the sound was amazing... what an f...ing contrast with his gracefulness. He also had exquisite control, as he could choose one of 20 different "shapes" to the trajectory.

He's #2 now because he has tremendous variety and a great serve. He used to win by blasting people off the court (e.g., Hewett in their US Open Final is a great example--simply shredding the ball).

Federer's FH is still a fine shot. The Djokovic and Wawrinka example are not great considering one is Djokovic in the prime of his career, and the other is a Wawrinka that hit the cover off the ball for basically 2 sets. The surface has a lot to do with the perception of the FH too. In fact, it's probably the most important factor. Look at Nadal. Aside from this year and maybe last he's had the GOAT FH on clay, but his FH is terrible on grass since 2012.

Obviously the FH has declined overall, but power is not the only thing important to a FH. Just because guys like Tsonga, Wawrinka, Berdych, Raonic can overpower him on that side in the few exchanges that happen in a match doesn't mean those guys have better FH's than Federer.

In fact, I'd say that Djokovic is the only guy with a better FH than Federer right now.

Good enough to make it to finals of Rome Masters! At 33 years old, with 4 kids. Good enough to be no 2 in the world!

I agree and I think its a big reason he can stay at the top.

His forehand is just nowhere near its best.
ITA on both points. (And I would add his net game for what is keeping him at the top but the 2 are linked as you can only use the net quickly and efficiently if you have a great serve to begin with).

Its good enough to keep him at ATP # 2 spot with his other skills, not Number 1 though.

Cheers

Djokovic was practicing his powerful forehand in preparation of possible RG match up with Nadal. It worked well for him as he got into the groove but may not work next time.

It's amazing he can still play this well, after having given birth to no less than 4 children.

I think his FH is still great but not as great as in 2004-2007 era. In 04-07, his FH was both more consistent and more explosive.
