Fergus Murphy should be suspended.

Murphy clearly, intentionally pushed Kyrgios' buttons last night. Kyrgios was playing a good match, but Fergus just couldn't have that apparently. And so he decided to begin starting the serve clock early. When Nick complained, Fergus just grinned back at him as he knew he had accomplished his goal of angering Kyrgios. Fergus pushed Kyrgios to the tipping point and then sat back and admired his handiwork. Fergus refused to default Kyrgios as he should have, instead letting Kyrgios continue as it ultimately gets more attention for himself as well. It is disgusting for an umpire to love to be the center of attention this much. This isn't the first time the dreaded Fergus has pissed off the best players. Djokovic, Federer, and Roddick are among them just to name a few. He truly is the worst umpire on the tour.

This seems an odd way to view it. But maybe it was time for someone to step up and mess with him.

Glad you could make it Nick.

Fergus should have gotten out of the chair, knelt down, and counseled Nick.

This should just be part of being chair for a Kyrgios match

You're on to something. Murphy is clearly a cyborg sent from the future to destroy Nick's chances at reaching the QFs at Cincinnati. Because that would change EVERYTHING.

It's all a huge conspiracy... very frightening.

Knelt down AND cleaned his sneakers. With the tongue.

And then asked Nick if he had "cleaned your sneakers to your satisfaction, my master".

I meant "my Lord Saviour" of course.

Shows what a polarizing figure Kyrgios is among tennis fans. They either support him or they don’t. He has some fanatics that think his issues are the chair umpires and the ATP. Almost like a psychosis.

Not sure if you’re being serious or not. Anyway, it doesn’t matter if some umpires are more strict than others. Just because one umpire enforces the rules strictly and another is more lenient doesn’t make Nick’s behavior okay. I was watching the match, Murphy started the clock after the crowd was silent and after he called the score, just like the rules say. Murphy showed restraint in that match. OP, what did Murphy do to “push Nick’s buttons?” It looked like Nick couldn’t handle the fact that he lost grip of the second set and was looking for something to complain about.

I'll say this, Nick was averaging 20 seconds between serves which is higher than usual for him. He was starting the clock very quickly. I watched the match. Not condoning Nick's actions because he went too far. Still, OP may have a point.

Nadal has a problem with Carlos Bernardes, and I guess Nick has one with Fergus Murphy. Nadal was able to not have Carlos chair his matches. I wonder if Nick will do the same. I also am not condoning Nicks actions as he does have outburst quite often. But everyone knows why we have a clock and Nick is one of the fastest players on serve so to get a time violation is interesting.

After a while it was inevitable that an umpire would retaliate I guess. Two wrongs don't make a right though. They should be separated for a little while imo. Nick needs to tone it down too because 100 K fines hurt players like him. He's not in the business end of slams making big checks.

Kyrgios already had a problem with Fergus Murphy this year at Queens. ATP should not have put Fergus and Kyrgios on the court together again. Fergus clearly wanted to get back at Nick from Queens.

...players should be allowed to umpire shop...when I play tournaments I always request that my mother be the chair, and I have my two nieces call lines for me...I have yet to lose.

Players shouldn't be paired with umpires they have a bad history with. Especially someone who is prone to display their emotions like Kyrgios. Can't imagine Carlos Ramos being assigned to umpire a Serena match. Fergus shouldn't have been assigned to Kyrgios'.

Nick did not get a time violation on serve. The time violation was when Khachanov was serving and Kyrgios had to stop and grip his racquet after smashing 2 off the court. Kyrgios never got a violation for the serve clock, which makes it even more ridiculous that he was complaining about it.

...more from the alternative universe...sirena should be in the chair for krazy-nikkie's next match so he can be judged by his peers--if he ever has a next match--jonnymac should be calling the lines--krazzy-nikkie should have to wear a straight-jacket if he needs to leave court for a bathroom break, so he can't harm himself or others with graphite splinters from racket smashing his way down to the loo--he's a true 51-50!

Anyone get a good look at the shot clock when it all started? I was watching tennisTV and never got a look.

Nick may have had a point once or twice but obviously took it wayyy too far, particularly with the meltdowns on the sitdowns. That is the time to try to shut up, reassess the match and regroup. I love how he carried on like an SJW talking about the top players being put on a pedestal while carrying on with rant after rant that was clearly bullying an official.

I'm sure Fergus felt bullied as he was grinning ear to ear.

It is almost like, but it is not. If he had a psychosis, he would not respond to events around him or actions towards him - and his mood swings are a direct response to evironment. It is something else - NK is a relatively low intellect person with (most likely) a borderline personality disorder (BPD) being exploited for profit. Free market and all.

Thanks for the professional diagnosis. We should relay this to Kyrgios so he can get treatment immediately.

He certainly does have a point. Nadal gets special treatment and yes, Kyrgios was correct about that. I know that doesn't excuse his bad behavior, but I watched the match and it seemed to me that Fergus Murphy was definitely goading him. You could tell by the expression on his face, he was enjoying every minute. He clearly dislikes Nick intensely. And those of you who are encouraging Federer to dump him from the Laver Cup, shame on you!

He got time violation warnings. Nick could see the clock was winding down and felt he had to rush his serve routine because of it.

You are being deceived by appearance. Conflict with others is detraction from root cause which is conflict with his own self. He is not capable of resolving his own identity (low intellect, low education are not helping), so he invents conflicts with others to have an illusion of doing something which prevents him from admitting his real problem, and resolving it.

He needs professional help ASAP.

fergus murphy is GOOD for tennis. He is Entertaining. And he needs to be cut some slack.
fergus is still finding himself. sure he has some maturing to do. But give him time.. the crowds love
him and will pay good money to see him ump. fergus has more talent in his pinky than every other
umpire working today. he just needs to harness it. but when he does, you will see fergus working the
biggest matches in the game. wait. until then let fergus be fergus. and get off his back.

The Serve Clock is one of the most ridiculous things ever introduced into the Sport.

I'm certainly not a fan of Nick's behaviour the other day but the Serve Clock rule is just plain Dumb!

There was nothing wrong with the Old Rule ... only the Officials who did not have the intestinal fortitude to tell Players to hurry up ... especially the so called "Special" players who always seem to get preferential treatment from the Officals because they are the players that pull in the crowds and the $$$.

Kyrgios is quickly becoming McEnroe 2.0!

John was rarely sanctioned because he was a major drawcard that kept the sport in the News. No wonder it took officials so long to do something about it. Same thing is happening with Kyrgios now. Financial Penalties are useless. Suspensions are what is required for really poor behaviour. But the likelihood of that at this stage of Nick's career is small.

Remember, it was finally Australians that took on McEnroe and put him in his place. Perhaps Australia needs to stand up again and do it to one of its "own" this time.

Penalizing little prince for breaking the rules is pushing his buttons now? Kyrgios is finally trying in matches but his fitness is not that good and he can't just rush on serve like when he barely ran at all. I don't mind if Fergus took a little pleasure from Kygios' meltdown. Thug deserves it after bullying him in Washington (water bottle incident).
